THE SHELTER ON HATTERAS is the ultimate getaway home. This emaculate Hatteras home has all of the comforts you'd expect. This is our second home, not a cookie-cutter rental.

You will be in the heart of Hatteras Village with all of its charm and adventure. You will be within a short walk of the Ocracoke ferry, four to five restaurants, unique shopping, three marinas, The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, and the most un-spoiled beach on the East Coast.

Lockable outside storage contains two bicycles, boogie boards, and beach chairs ready and waiting for you! A huge outside cedar-lined shower and mirrored dressing area. High-speed wireless Internet so bring your laptop! Cable television in each room. Fish cleaning table, where you can prepare your days catch for dinner.

The Outer Banks were the first part of the Atlantic to be visited by English settlers, principally Sir Walter Raleigh’s expedition in the 1580’s.Through centuries of isolation the people inhabiting the outer banks have developed a way of life all their own. Hatteras near its southern tip is within 12 miles of the Gulf Stream is known as “Game Fish Junction” because abundance of northern and southern species of fish. It is off Cape Hatteras that the Labrador Current collides with the warm tropical water of the Gulf Stream.

Several marinas, including Hatteras Landing, Teach's Lair Marina, Hatteras Harbor Marina, and Oden's Dock have headboats and charter boats available to take you fishing in the sound, inlet or the beautiful blue waters of the Gulf Stream. Scuba diving charters for exploring the many shipwrecks off our coast are also available, as well as para-sailing and dolphin and eco-tours.

The SHELTER is about 100 yards from Teaches Lair Marina. You can book your fishing trip or just visit before 4pm to see the days catch. The typical catches are blue marlin, sailfish, dolphin, red drum, wahoo, kings and spanish, bluefish, tuna, and grouper.

USA Today named Hatteras Island one of top ten best beaches in all of the US! and I heard recently that Hatteras has also been named in the Top 10 Most Romantic beaches.

Another popular family activity is to take the free Hatteras Inlet Ferry from Hatteras Village to explore the quaint fishing village on Ocracoke Island or climb the famous Cape Hatteras Lighthouse only ten miles away.
Ocracoke was named the Nations #1 beach for 2007. As a guest of THE SHELTER you are only seconds away from the free ferry to OCRACOKE!!!!!

    • The Shelter absolutely ROCKS! This was our first trip to the Outer Banks and we threw most all plans out the window when we got to the Shelter and saw that all we needed was right there and we just soaked in the whole experience rather than trying to squeeze in a busy week. The house is so comfortable with an interior that fit us and our 6 yo perfectly, the deck with the hammock chairs and the outdoor speakers and the top deck for sunning and looking over the marina. The outdoor shower spoiled us all. The walk to the beach is easy and any thing you want to eat is a walk across the street to the Hatteras Landing and Teaches Lair. Teaches Lair Bar and Grille has just awesome food too. Make a trip or 2 to Ocracoke. Very eclectic island with grat little shops and of course, Howards Pub. We are already anxious to check our calendars to book The Shelter for the same week next year!

    • A perfect house for our family of 6 - my wife and I, and four kids had an unforgettable week there the first week of June. The house is wonderfully located in Hatteras. The highlights are too numerous to mention -- 1. The outdoor shower. 2. The view from the upper deck. 3. The comfortable beds at night. 4. The kitchen. 5. The DVD player -- easy to rent from video store up the road after a long day out and about. 6. The beaches at Haterras and Ocracoke are marvelously undeveloped and virtually empty. It's like you're at the end of the world. 7. Go to Howard's Pub and Teach's Hole (pirate stuff!) at Ocracoke. Can't wait to return!

    • We stayed here the last week of june 2007, Everything was GREAT the house was spotless, easy walk to beach and hatteras landing . close to ferry. The house felt very personable not a plan cookie cutter vacation home, we have stayed in other houses in the OBX and this felt like home . Also with linens provided was a great extra even beach towels !!! It was the perfect size for our family (6)(4 kids). The shelter was wonderful!!! After using the outside shower we will be installing one at home on our farm!! I would highly reccomend this home. Kari

    • We had a wonderful time in Hatteras. The house was great and in such a perfect location. It was an easy walk to the beach and to the shopping area of Hatteras Landing. We were there at the end of May 2007 and the weather was great and the water was warm. The house is lovely. It is very comfortable and clean. It had everything we needed. The outdoor shower was also great. I highly recommend the house. Alice Basler
