You will be in the heart of Hatteras Village with all of its charm and adventure. You will be within a short walk of the Ocracoke ferry, four to five restaurants, unique shopping, three marinas, The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, and the most un-spoiled beach on the East Coast.
Lockable outside storage contains bicycles, boogie boards, and beach chairs ready and waiting for you! A huge outside cedar-lined shower and mirrored dressing area. High-speed wireless Internet so bring your laptop! Cable television in each room. Fish cleaning table, where you can prepare your days catch for dinner.
The Outer Banks were the first part of the Atlantic to be visited by English settlers, principally Sir Walter Raleigh’s expedition in the 1580’s.Through centuries of isolation the people inhabiting the outer banks have developed a way of life all their own. Hatteras near its southern tip is within 12 miles of the Gulf Stream is known as “Game Fish Junction” because abundance of northern and southern species of fish. It is off Cape Hatteras that the Labrador Current collides with the warm tropical water of the Gulf Stream.
Several marinas, including Hatteras Landing, Teach's Lair Marina, Hatteras Harbor Marina, and Oden's Dock have headboats and charter boats available to take you fishing in the sound, inlet or the beautiful blue waters of the Gulf Stream. Scuba diving charters for exploring the many shipwrecks off our coast are also available, as well as para-sailing and dolphin and eco-tours.
The SHELTER is about 100 yards from Teaches Lair Marina. You can book your fishing trip or just visit before 4pm to see the days catch. The typical catches are blue marlin, sailfish, dolphin, red drum, wahoo, kings and spanish, bluefish, tuna, and grouper.
USA Today named Hatteras Island one of top ten best beaches in all of the US! and I heard recently that Hatteras has also been named in the Top 10 Most Romantic beaches.
Another popular family activity is to take the free Hatteras Inlet Ferry from Hatteras Village to explore the quaint fishing village on Ocracoke Island or climb the famous Cape Hatteras Lighthouse only ten miles away. Ocracoke was named the Nations #1 beach for 2007. As a guest of THE SHELTER you are only seconds away from the free ferry to OCRACOKE!!!!!
