Excellent week at The Shelter

Guest: Whitey and Glenda (Waynesville, NC)
Date of Stay: 07/16/11 Review Submitted: 11/06/11

We absolutley LOVED our week at The Shelter!!! Just cannot say enough good things about this house. It was more than we had hoped for during our week at Hatteras. I always worry about how clean our place will be, but this was definitely one of the cleanest place we have ever stayed! We loved all the extras included for our stay. Lots of linens, even beach towels, kitchen, bikes, beach chairs, grill, water hoses to spray off your vehicle, and lots more!!! Every room was so comfortable and well equipped, esp the kitchen. We love to cook in and everything was there we needed! Loved the hammock chairs, outdoor stereo, deck on upper level, storage room on ground level, fish cleaning tables, and of course the outdoor shower!!!! This was our first time at not being ocean front, but with the location of The Shelter, it really didn't matter. We had a perfect week here and I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a home away from home! The owner, Amy, was a delight to deal with and was always more than helpful with any questions/concerns I had. You will not be disappointed with The Shelter!

Didn't want to leave!

Guest: Rob (London, UK)
Date of Stay: 08/23/11 Review Submitted: 08/29/11

We were visiting from the UK and managed to sneak in a short trip to the Outer Banks. Amy was great and quite happy to have us at the Shelter for a few nights. We arrived and immediately fell in love with The Shelter and the location right at the southern end of Hatteras. The accommodation was great with lovely comfy bedrooms, perfect for our teenage sons, and a well equipped kitchen. Needless to say, not much time was spent indoors as we were immediately out on the decks for sunset. After a day at the Bathhouse beach we took advantage of the outdoor shower - what a great idea though maybe not so useful in the UK! Unfortunately our short break was curtailed by Hurricane Irene so we had to leave earlier than expected - no more outdoor showers for this trip. We left with heavy hearts and hopes that Irene would spare Hatteras and The Shelter so that we can return for a longer break with the boys next time. Thanks Amy for letting us share The Shelter.

Owner response:Thanks so much! Special thanks for preparing our home for "Irene". She was mean...but so far reports have been that The Shelter has lived up to it's name! Can't wait for "you all" to come back and stay again! You are now part of our Shelter family!

Packing up to leave. We had an incredible week. The house has everything you wish for if you like to cook... Only no dishwasher! We had the week of our lives... Went to Ocracoke by ferry, walked the beach, sunned ourselves on the beach and ate the best fresh seafood! We biked to dinner and the shops.... Watched the most beautiful sunsets from our top deck.... I will truly miss them! We will be back!!.

Owner response:Thanks for staying at The Shelter. Can't wait for you to come back!

The Shelter was PERFECT

Guest: Alison (Long Island, NY)
Date of Stay: 08/21/10 Review Submitted: 08/29/10

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed staying at the Shelter. Hatteras Village is a laid back and beautiful place to relax and enjoy the beach, fishing, and exploring. Everything at the Shelter was in great condition and there were many personal touches that made our stay wonderful. It was difficult to leave! We were a group of five (4 adults and a 2 year old) and the home was comfortable for all of us. My son even took his first shower in the lovely outdoor shower. The beach access was wonderful and easy. We brought my son and gear down the road in a wagon (which we brought from home) and left it where the boardwalk began. It was always safe and a really easy way to access the beach. We can't say enough great things about this charming home and beautiful vacation spot!

Owner response:Jim and I just love knowing that families-like yours have had such good times at The Shelter! Thanks for staying! By the way-you left just in time-before Earl made his visit. And Yes...The Shelter lived up to her name-she is fine! We are so thankful! Hope you come back soon!

Extremely Relaxing

Guest: Mark (Baltimore)
Date of Stay: 05/29/10 Review Submitted: 07/26/10

One of the best, most relaxing beach vacations we've had in a long time. The descriptions and reviews of this property were accurate. We were there in early June and did not use the AC at all during the entire week. Only 1 shower for 6 guests was taken indoors all week as the outdoor shower was a hit to say the least. The rooftop deck was perhaps the highlight of this trip, at both sunrise and sundown - extremely enjoyable for coffee time, reading, talking, cocktail hour, etc.. A very peaceful - no traffic, no crossroads - walk to the beach in about 3 minutes. Within view of the rooftop deck is Teach's Lair-store, bar, marina-which is virtually in the backyard of The Shelter so walking over to view the day's catch in the afternoon is just a minute or two away. If you're not an early riser, shut the bedroom windows as on the weekend/holiday the fisherman with their boats and trailers show up early and park nearby, but as we are early risers we enjoyed the morning activity and excitement. The gas grill was old and seemed out of operation so we enjoyed the charcoal grill several times. We ate in the entire week in The Shelter's very functional and roomy eat-in kitchen. I highly recommend both The Shelter and Hatteras Village as a very relaxing-easy going location, much less commercial than further north on the island. The owners are very friendly and helpful and The Shelter definitely adopts the laid-back 'island attitude'. I will look no further than this rental if and when we return to Hatteras.

The Shelter was perfect!

Guest: Thom (Virginia)
Date of Stay: 06/26/10 Review Submitted: 07/10/10

The Shelter is in a great location. Walking to the beach was great! The neighborhood we were in felt more private because of the trees. It was very clean and had all the amenities, even a crock pot! The hammock chairs were so relaxing and everyone loved the outdoor shower. I was skeptical at first, but was won over on my first time using it. It is a very cozy house. Both our families had a great time!

Owner response:We have been so blessed to have such wonderful families staying at The Shelter! We hope you all relaxed, enjoyed the ocean and made wonderful memories at The Shelter. Thanks to all for taking such good care-like it was your own. Come back soon! PS-I really think we should just take out the indoor showers!

The Shelter absolutely ROCKS! This was our first trip to the Outer Banks and we threw most all plans out the window when we got to the Shelter and saw that all we needed was right there and we just soaked in the whole experience rather than trying to squeeze in a busy week. The house is so comfortable with an interior that fit us and our 6 yo perfectly, the deck with the hammock chairs and the outdoor speakers and the top deck for sunning and looking over the marina. The outdoor shower spoiled us all. The walk to the beach is easy and any thing you want to eat is a walk across the street to the Hatteras Landing and Teaches Lair. Teaches Lair Bar and Grille has just awesome food too. Make a trip or 2 to Ocracoke. Very eclectic island with grat little shops and of course, Howards Pub. We are already anxious to check our calendars to book The Shelter for the same week next year!

A perfect house for our family of 6 - my wife and I, and four kids had an unforgettable week there the first week of June. The house is wonderfully located in Hatteras. The highlights are too numerous to mention -- 1. The outdoor shower. 2. The view from the upper deck. 3. The comfortable beds at night. 4. The kitchen. 5. The DVD player -- easy to rent from video store up the road after a long day out and about. 6. The beaches at Haterras and Ocracoke are marvelously undeveloped and virtually empty. It's like you're at the end of the world. 7. Go to Howard's Pub and Teach's Hole (pirate stuff!) at Ocracoke. Can't wait to return!

We stayed here the last week of june 2007, Everything was GREAT the house was spotless, easy walk to beach and hatteras landing . close to ferry. The house felt very personable not a plan cookie cutter vacation home, we have stayed in other houses in the OBX and this felt like home . Also with linens provided was a great extra even beach towels !!! It was the perfect size for our family (6)(4 kids). The shelter was wonderful!!! After using the outside shower we will be installing one at home on our farm!! I would highly reccomend this home. Kari

We had a wonderful time in Hatteras. The house was great and in such a perfect location. It was an easy walk to the beach and to the shopping area of Hatteras Landing. We were there at the end of May 2007 and the weather was great and the water was warm. The house is lovely. It is very comfortable and clean. It had everything we needed. The outdoor shower was also great. I highly recommend the house. Alice Basler
