Luxurious furnishings in an air-conditioned condo with bamboo laminate floors.
Location: Kihei Akahi, Kihei Central, Kihei, South Maui, Maui, Hawaii, USA (Kahului Maui Airport (OGG) 15 mi, Wailea 1 mi, Lahaina 25 mi) View Map
Accommodations: Condominiums, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-4)
Makai means “toward the ocean” in Hawaiian. We call Unit D-614 at Kihei Akahi “Makai Vista” because of its spectacular 180-degree panoramic views. Makai Vista is our top-floor, 1-bedroom, 1-bath unit with wonderful views of the water, sunsets and nearby islands. Photos just can’t capture the sweeping view from the lanai (balcony). Warm tones are reflected in the furnishings and art work. You’ll love curling up on the comfortable chaise lounge.
We try to provide everything you’ll need during your time in Hawaii. The condo has a fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher and microwave and an entertainment center with a large flat-panel high-definition cable TV, DVD, and stereo with CD. For those unusually hot days when Maui’s trade winds aren’t enough to keep you comfortable, the living area has an air conditioner.
Your computer won’t have to share the dining table. There’s a desk with FREE high-speed Internet access, a telephone with answering machine (free local calls), and a mirror so you can see the view while you’re working.
Guests rave about the high-quality, firm queen bed, and the living area has a queen sofabed. The unit has its own washer/dryer, and we provide beach towels, beach chairs, coolers and a beach umbrella.
The popular Kihei Akahi complex is located directly across from Kamaole II Beach Park, one of Kihei’s best swimming beaches. It is about a 6-minute walk from Makai Vista to the beach. Kihei Akahi offers very nice grounds with tropical landscaping, two pools, gas barbecues and tennis court. The four buildings in the complex are all different and set well apart from each other within Kihei Akahi’s lush grounds, so the complex feels uncrowded and relaxed. The D building is set back several hundred feet from South Kihei Road so you don’t see the road and rarely hear any traffic noise. The complex is walking distance to shops and restaurants. Wailea, Maui’s luxury golf and resort area, is about a mile away.
We know that where you stay is important, and we know the only surprises you want are pleasant ones. We made Kihei Akahi D-614 a place we like to stay ourselves, and we think you will too. We hope you will be our guest very soon!

Spectacular Views from Top-Floor Kihei Akahi D-614
Year Purchased: 1996
Why the Owner Chose Kihei Akahi
It was tough to choose a location for our first vacation rental, because we love all of Hawaii and each island offers something unique. We finally settled on Kihei, Maui, because it has a great combination of attractions for a visitor. Kihei’s location in South Maui, on the leeward side of Mt. Haleakala, gives it the sunniest weather on the island. The area near Kihei offers a string of the best beaches on Maui. South Kihei’s location next to the luxury hotels and resorts of Wailea makes it upscale but affordable.
It took several visits to find the right property, but we found it at the Kihei Akahi complex. From the instant we saw the spectacular view from the D-614 lanai, we knew it had the “Wow! Factor” we wanted. We completely redecorated the unit, incorporating everything we learned from our years of being both travelers and hosts, and we regularly upgrade and redecorate it so it remains one of the finest units at Kihei Akahi. We have bought and sold many properties in Hawaii since that purchase of D-614 many years ago, but it remains our sentimental favorite!
Owner's Map of Kihei Akahi
The story of our life together is the story of our love for Hawaii. Each of us fell in love with Hawaii on our first visits over 20 years ago. We started making one or two trips a year, traveling extensively throughout the islands. With some planning and some luck, we both developed business interests in Hawaii, which brought us to the islands even more often. Our mutual love for Hawaii played a major part in our own relationship. When we decided to get married, we knew it had to be in Hawaii, and we were married on the lanai of a beautiful Big Island home overlooking the Pacific.
We kept exploring each island and discovering new things to do and new places to stay. After years of planning (and saving), we purchased Kihei Akahi D-614 as our first vacation rental. As we were looking for another vacation rental condo, we discovered our dream Hawaiian hale (house) in Puna on the Big Island. The house and grounds were so extraordinary that the Hawaiian word kakahi — unique, outstanding — seemed the only fitting name, so the house became Hale Kakahi.
It took us awhile, but in Spring 2001 we left our California jobs, packed our possessions, and moved to Hale Kakahi full time. We continued to have fun filling up D-614 with travelers coming to Hawaii. We eventually met other Maui condominium owners, as well as owners of vacation rentals near us on the Big Island, and a natural reservation and referral business was born, Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals. Eventually we moved from Hale Kakahi and it, too, is now a wonderful vacation rental (VRBO #27227).
We like to think our move to Hawaii proves that sometimes dreams really can come true. We wake each day thankful to live in such a beautiful place, and we try never to take it for granted.
