Across the road from the very pretty park in Spoleto with its posh restaurant and bar nestling within the trees, 3 minutes walk to Piazza Liberta, the Roman amphitheatre and the shops, bars and restaurants in the very centre of Spoleto, this brand-new modern apartment is just a short bus-ride to the train station, from where you can get to practically anywhere in Italy.
Just round the corner from the grand Vialle Giacomo Matteotti, otherwise known as “ the passegiatta” – famous because it originated here, Penthouse On The Park is at the top of a 7 year old, purpose built block of up-market apartments, inhabited by a handful of wealthy, professional Italians. Serviced by an elevator, Penthouse On The Park is on 3 levels and has been architecturally designed to make the best use of its ample spaces.
It consists of a spacious living/dining space, complete with fitted kitchen and glass fronted fire-place. There are 2 sets of double glass, shuttered doors, which open onto a long balcony. The balcony looks across to the park. It also looks down onto the road so that when the doors are open, you can hear the sound of the traffic but it is not at all intrusive. And, there is double-glazing throughout so there is no need to open the doors if you wish for complete silence. On this floor, there is also a shower room with toilet.
You reach the 1st floor via a steel staircase, where there are 2 double bedrooms. The master bedroom has a large double bed and an ensuite bathroom with a shower, a toilet and half-sized tub. The 2nd bedroom has a large double bed and is partly mezzanine with a curtained railing at the end so that if you stand at the end, you can see down into the sitting room - but you cannot see into the room from below. In every other respect, this bedroom is totally private. To the side and out of sight of the open frontage of the bedroom, there is another ensuite bathroom with a shower, a toilet and a full-sized tub.
From the 1st floor, a further set of metal steps takes you up to a spectacular roof terrace that has the most breath-taking, uninterrupted, all round panoramic views of hills, olive groves, mountains and the city of Spoleto. So, while the apartment block is on a main road that is quiet at several times of the day, being at the top of a 3 level apartment on the top floor of a 5 level block does rather remove you from the road altogether. Of course, there will always be the sounds of the city if you tune into them; but, up here on the terrace, you are in a different world. Below you are roof-tops, tree-tops and the vast world at large. It is high enough to see everything but not so high that you lose touch with the earth below ! You cannot fail to be affected in the most dramatic way as you contemplate the universe from this vantage point.
If you particularly enjoy the sun, this is an ideal terrace. And, there are sun-beds and dining furniture. The terrace is safe for children because there are railings that completely enclose it. |
