Dear Bill and Mary Ellen, It's always good to be home, but I sure do miss our lovely spot on Kauai. One of the things that made it so nice was having a wonderful place to stay- we really felt at home there, and Bamboo suited us perfectly. It's so nice to have a comfortable home away from home. Here are a few of my favorite photos that I took around your place. Thanks for providing such a beautiful and peaceful spot.

Superb

The only misleading thing is that Bamboo Cottage is much more than a cottage - it's a lovely 2nd floor aerie, beautifully constructed and outfitted, with spectacular views from the lanai and all rooms. Nothing was lacking, and the site is so relaxing that it's hard to be motivated to do much sight seeing, though there are plenty of sights in the area, and lots of fun restaurants. Particularly enjoyed the Kilauea Bakery for morning coffee and pastries or the Dolphin for fresh seafood. Owners were available and helpful.

Owner response:We enjoyed having these guests so much-they were positively interested in all aspects of island life and alot of fun!

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at the Bamboo Cottage. The cottage was decorated beautifully and had two fresh tropical boquets to greet us. The views were wonderful from any window or the deck (which had great furniture on it) The grounds around the cottage were planted with tropicals.....lots of them! Fresh fruit was left on our doorsteep , which we enjoyed throughly. We would definately recommend this property to friends....and we want to go back again ourselves.

Killer views from the Bamboo Cottage's lanai

We enjoyed virtually every meal en plein air while drinking in the panoramic view of the hills, canyons and gardens. What a special treat to pick up fresh fruit from the garden including lemons, limes, grapefruit, starfruit, tangelos and avocados. Exploring the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuse was effortless due to its proximity, and hikes to incredible vistas, secret beaches and beautiful bays were fabulous. Our last trip to Kaua'i was in 1994 . . . I can't believe we waited until 2012 to revisit this wonderful jewel in the Hawaiian Islands chain.

My wife and I enjoyed the location, the beautiful home with very nice appointments, and especially the gorgeous landscaping, both by Mary Ellen and Bill, and by GOD! I agree, the photos do not do this gorgeous home justice. The whole island is beautiful. We enjoyed it all in the 7 days we were there. The fresh eggs and fresh fruit, some we had never eaten before was a very nice touch. We enjoyed staying in your lovely home. Thanks for a great visit. Good luck on the drag strip, Bill.

We will be back to the Bamboo Cottage

My first impression of the Bamboo Cottage was not based upon the cottage itself, but the spectacular panoramic view from the lanai and living room. The massive wall of Albizia trees in upward flight toward a green distant mountain ridge is an amazing and very memorable composition. You are in a jungle, and that is exactly where you want to be. My second impression was based upon the realization that, looking closer to home, I was in a garden of visual, auditory and tactile delights. That is exactly where you want to be – trust me. The cottage apartment is well appointed with upscale furnishings and is comfortable. The lanai beckons, and you will find yourself there often. The view from the bath and bedroom; well documented in other reviews, has to be experienced to be fully appreciated. The same goes for the waterfalls, Koi ponds and multicolor plants and other vegetation shown in the advertising photos. If you must leave paradise, three of the best beaches on the North Shore are just minutes away, with beach and snorkel equipment provided to you. The Princeville Center, with shops, restaurants and Foodland grocery (where you have a discount) is no more than a five minute drive. Hanalei town and beach is an additional five minutes away. I have read each of the other reviews of the Bamboo Cottage and I can add nothing new to the positive comments about our hosts and the property. I support them all. Serene, tranquil, relaxing, romantic and personal: That is how I would describe the Bamboo Cottage. Say hello to Jack the cat and the free range chickens if you rent the Bamboo Cottage.

Owner response:Wonderful guests-we enjoyed having them

My wife and I stayed here and we loved it. The cottage and the grounds were breathtaking. The peaceful garden and the bamboo rustling in the breeze at night outside our bedroom window were wonderful. We spent a lot of time in the hot tub. The owners Bill and MaryEllen were very accommodating without being too present. Close to Hanalei and all the North shore sights but an easy trip to the South or West side if it got rainy. Definitely recommend it.

Mary Ellen, We just got back this afternoon and are getting back to the real world. Booo! I want to let you know that we stayed in 4 different places on two different islands in Hawaii, and the Bamboo Cottage was absolutely our favorite! We loved your home and your non invasive hospitality. We also loved the north shore of Kauai the best out of all of the places we stayed.

We had the most wonderful time at the Bamboo cottage. WE loved the space. It was clean, comfortable and very nicely decorated. WE absolutely LOVED the location, looking out onto the mountains with the rich trees and plants, and Mary Ellen's garden made it feel like we were in Paradise. We enjoyed sitting in the hot tub and enjoying the afternoon in this amazing landscape. Bill and Mary Ellen provided us with everything we needed, (loved the fresh eggs!) If we ever get to Kaua'i again I hope we can stay here. Thanks Mary Ellen and Bill.

Owner response:We loved having you and meeting other members of your family

We stayed at Bamboo for our honeymoon in March and it was perfect! Bill and Mary Ellen were very hospitable. They left us fresh eggs from their hens, lent kayaks and snorkel gear, and were genuinely welcoming. We were very pleased with our choice to stay there!

This is a wonderful vacation rental. The pictures do not do it justice. The views, plant life, flowers, and birds are gorgeous--and this is in the winter time. The apartment is decorated beautifully, and very well maintained. The bed is cozy. The bathtub has all the jets in the right place for a hiker. Hosts, Janie, Dave, and Jack (the cat) were excellent hosts. I felt like I had the place to myself mostly. It is very near Kalihiwai beach, Anini beach, and my favorite, Secret beach. Kiluea light house is also a lovely close-by attraction.

A little stay in Paradise!

Date of Stay: 05/28/10 Review Submitted: 06/16/10

Bamboo Cottage was amazing! Being from the Pacific Northwest we really love our trees, and the view from our lanai of the lush tropical rainforest across the Kahiliwai River Valley was perfect for us! We enjoyed every meal with that magnificent view, watching the Myna birds and white cattle egrets fly across the expanse. It is so peaceful. Mary Ellen and Bill have landscaped their little bit of paradise to perfection and our comfortable apartment overlooked the scenery from every direction. Flowers and exotic plants abound everywhere! Imagine brushing your teeth in the morning and instead of a mirror in front of you, you gaze out on the little waterfall in the garden just below your window. For beachgoers Anini Beach is only a few minutes drive away, and the drive to Ke'e Beach and Tunnels for really great snorkeling is only about 30-40 minutes away. Stop in Hanalei at Wishing Well for the best shave ice on the island! The handy little market and shopping center in Princeville is only about 3 miles away for most anything you need, but don't miss the Farmer's Market - it opens at noon on Thursday. Lots of wonderful local produce! Buy your pineapple there - it is Ssssooo much better than from the grocery store. They had kayaks for our use and Bill helped us get one down to the river for a very relaxing afternoon paddle to a place where we could walk through the "jungles" of Kauai to see a waterfall. A very nice way to spend a few hours with no one else about. Maybe it was the time of year that we were there, but we saw no pesky bugs or mosquitos during our stay. I would call that a bonus! The location is not far from the road but very quiet and secluded. We found Bamboo Cottage to be the perfect destination for us on Kauai and we'll certainly be coming back again. Thanks very much to our hospitable hosts - especially Jack, their very friendly cat, who appreciated a good rub-down anytime we were outside. Mahalo and Aloha!

Beautiful Kauai

I was out walking this morning and it reminded me of our wonderful stay at your home in February of 2010 (minus chickens running in the streets). We still think of you and beautiful Kauai. We've been traveling the beautiful U.S.A. in our 5th wheel trailer for 17 months. We did winter in Southeast Georgia on a house sitting arrangement. We've been coast to coast and border to border. We'll stay in a area until we've exhausted all there is to do and then try another area. Now in the finger lakes of N.Y. and loving it. We never heard how the trip to Australia was and I'm sure you've had many more travels since than. I can see and smell your beautiful home and gardens as I write this. We hope all is well with you.

We had a wonderful two week stay at Bamboo and felt like we had entered our own private jungle retreat. The views from the lanai were breath taking, the garden a delight - complete with our own private hot tub. The apartment was perfectly furnished and had every amenity you might need, and the Turks were wonderful hosts who delighted us with fresh fruit and flowers from their garden and even fresh eggs from their hens. We loved riding the bikes in the morning and walking on Anini Beach. Hanalei was a short car trip away. I highly recommend staying here.

We think we've discovered paradise on the island of Kauai at Bamboo Cottage. The photos don't begin to do justice to this charming property. The view of the rainforest-covered mountains from the lanai is breathtaking and we didn't need a view of the beach when we had scenery like this at our doorstep. The cottage is very well appointed with everything we could possibly want for our stay including boogie boards, kayaks and snorkeling gear. We enjoyed snorkeling at Anini and catching the waves at Hanalei. Calling in at the fish market at Hanalei to pick up fresh fish for dinner was a real treat and we certainly enjoyed watching the sunset from the Jacuzzi. We'd love to stay at this property again. Mary Ellen and Bill are wonderful hosts and we had complete privacy in our own upstairs unit.

Bamboo This was the vacation of a lifetime = with a romantic movie-set view from the porch of nothing but green, a huge lush valley, cloud topped mountains, a river down below, and to the left a beach just out of sight but an easy an invigorating little walk down a hill. It had two of the world’s finest beaches in a short walk – Anini Beach was our favorite to the left, snorkeling, private quiet, birds, books, CDs, you need not bring a thing. We took the big kayak to the river on two days, going up to the waterfalls (we never walked up to them, but they are there). It has all the amenities; the private hot tub on the edge of the valley, everything. It’s the best deal on Kauai, we think. And Mary Ellen Turk’s advice on everything on Kauai is first rate.
