Kinvara is a picturesque fishing village, located on the South Shores of Galway Bay. The Irish name for Kinvara is 'Chinn Mhara' which translates as 'the head of the sea.' Traditional music can be heard in the pubs including Green's, Connolly's, and The Old Plaid Shawl. Kinvara is renowned for great musical stock and has been known to cater to the world's finest musicians.
There is a fine selection of restaurants and cafés in the village as well art and craft shops and general shopping. Galway City is 30 minutes away, Ennis 40 minutes, Shannon Airport 60 minutes, and Dublin two-and-one-half hours.
Dunguaire Castle is the gateway to Kinvara and is open to visitors from May to October. Medieval banquets are held at the castle featuring traditional music, food, and song.
Kinvara celebrates yearly with two festivals, The Cruinniu na mBad and the Fleadh na gCuach. Cruinniu na mBad (The Gathering of the Boats) is in its 28th year and has become Ireland's best known Galway Hooker festival. The festival is held in August each year. The Fleadh na gCuach (The Cuckoo Festival) is held each year on the May Bank Holiday Weekend. It is a Traditional Irish Music festival holding over 50 music sessions in the villages' pubs. Concerts are also planned as well as children's events, art and crafts, poetry and drama workshops.
Kinvara is perfect for day tripping to the Burren, Cliffs of Moher, Aillwee Cave, and the Aran Islands. For literary buffs Thoor Ballylee, the home of W.B. Yates, and Coole Park, the home of Lady Gregory, are nearby attractions. If golf is your passion a trip to Lahinch is a must and the 18-hole championship golf course at Gort is only a ten-minute drive. The blue flag beach at Tracht Beach is a mere five-minute drive.
