Nyons house description
Location: Nyons, Provence, France, Europe (50 miles Northeast of Avignon. Near Vaison la Romaine)
Accommodations: The Fauvette
It's a small, charming house, tall and narrow (called a bedside table in Provence). The first floor has 3 doors, one for the owners who lived on the top two floors and the other two opening into vaulted rooms which were most likely stables at one time. We renovated the house, making the two rooms into a children's bedroom and a bathroom. One of the front doors has been blocked up and made into a closet. There are two twin beds and in summer the room is very cool. There is a low passageway between the two rooms; children use it easily, but adults need to scrunch down a bit to not bang their heads.
On the second floor is a small but complete kitchen with a full size refrigerator and an electric range as well as dishes, pans and utensils. An adjoining room can serve as a dining room-sitting room with a TV-VCR and lots of movies; it also has a bed and can serve as a bedroom.
On the top floor (garden level) is the master bedroom with two comfortable twin beds that can be put together to make a queen-size bed. The room has a large closet, a Provencal armoire and oriental rugs on the floor. On the same level is the master bathroom with a large shower but no tub.
Three steps up from the master bedroom is a terrace for the Fauvette and our garden with a splash pool. We live in the Feudal Chateau of Nyons which shares its garden with the Fauvette. (In fact, we bought the Fauvette primarily to get its garden to complete the Chateau=s garden. Having bought it we had to renovate it and now it is an old house in the medieval part of Nyons with all modern conveniences, new plumbing, heating, appliances and furnishings.) The terraced garden leads up to the remains of an ancient watchtower that overlooks all of Nyons and has a view to the hills with olive groves and vineyards.
If you are interested in cooking, classes with Lydie Marshall can be arranged during your stay (See her website with this listing. In the area are many interesting things to explore; such as going to Isle Sur Sorgue a small town, one hour from us which is famous for its antique and decorating shops on Saturday, Sunday and Monday ; St Remy de Provence is about an hour and a half away where you can elbow with the rich and famous and see some very lovely countryside. Go to the Pont du Gard, the magnificent roman viaduct and bridge and have lunch in Uzes, the most italianate town in Provence. We are 15 minutes by car from historic Vaison la Romaine and an hour from Avignon. The Rhone Valley wine areas of Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Cairanne, and Rasteau are within a half-hour=s drive; Chateau-Neuf du Pape is just a little farther. Northern Provence has many interesting and beautiful towns that are within easy visiting distance. Hiking or simply walking in the hills and olive groves, bicycling, and tennis are all within a few minutes from town. There is a large municipal swimming pool that is open in June, July and August. Many of our guests like to see the sights, have a great lunch and come back to Nyons toward the end of the afternoon to relax in the garden or have a glass of wine at the pool. We are also there to help you with any problem that might arise or with suggestions for a very pleasant stay. Nyons is known as the olive capital of France because of the local production of delicious black olives and olive oil. Nyons has its own fascinating market every Thursday morning and other markets are in nearby towns other days of the week. A three minute walk to the center of town gives access to all sorts of stores, cafes, restaurants and even a small but complete supermarket. One can live here without getting into a car but if you want to tour around the region it is advisable to have one. Access to Nyons is by train to Montelimar or Avignon + bus to Nyons or we can arrange for private car service to and from the train station. Rental cars are available in Avignon, Nice, Marseille, and Montelimar. There is a fast rail connection from Charles DeGaulle airport direct to Avignon, or if you are coming from London you can get the train from St. Pancras station to Avignon. Ryan Air has cheap flights from London to Nimes, one and one-half hours away by car. Other airlines fly to Marseille or Lyon, both about two and a half hours away by car.
