This place is amazingly beautiful!! It's like a tree house :) We came Malibu to attend a wedding and it was just me, my husband and our little boy (under 2 yo). We had a fantastic time...morning breakfast on the porch, watching the birds and leaves swaying, relaxing on the hot tub at night, enjoying the beach during the day and hiking some trails nearby...it was unforgettable! Only drawback is the tight parking, but I guess that's pretty common in CA though...anyhow, I highly recommend this place because it was pretty unique.

My husband and I just got back from a week at this super-cute cottage and we both highly recommend it. It felt like we had our own private home and yard in beautiful Topanga Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains, and it was so close to the beach and all of the other amenities in the area. Santa Monica, Topanga, and Malibu are minutes away, as are 2 different hiking areas with spectacular views (not to mention the view from the house!) We liked this place so much that we ate most of our meals here, grilling out on our deck and then eating and hanging out at one of the outdoor tables in our yard. The price also cannot be beat - this is a fantastic deal in a part of the country where things just cost more - we felt extremely lucky to have stayed here and will definitely stay again the next time we come to this gorgeous part of the US. Many thanks Shari and Bert for sharing your beautiful spot with us!

I stayed here in Mid-January and really enjoyed the place. It's a beautiful setting and convenient to both the Valley and Venice and Santa Monica. The owners are helpful and non-intrusive and very nice to deal with. I would agree with another reviewer about the fact that producing the balance owed in cash was inconvenient and maybe a better system could be created. Also, Shari was very clear about the fact that basically, you are staying in the equivalent of a tree house: many flights of stairs up from where you park. I have some issues with my legs, so I found this challenging, but went ahead because I thought the place was special enough to warrant the extra effort. I was right-- I ended up being very glad to have stayed here. There are places to stop & rest on the way up. But my advice is, don't bring overly heavy luggage. It will be very difficult to get it to the cottage. But having said that, the view is gorgeous, the cottage is comfortable for two, and it's a nice, relaxing place to stay. What more can you ask?

Bert and Shari cottage in Malibu is a place to get away for a little while yet close to get to the city if need be. They are amongst the nicest people I have met in the Los Angeles area. The cottage was nicely kept and I didn't expect for Shari to go to such length to prepare for my stay. Needless to say so went over and beyond what I had expected this experience to be like. If your looking to get away this is a great place to consider.

A beautiful spot for a relaxing get-away. Near the action of LA but tucked away in a peaceful canyon. The cottage is fully loaded for home cooked meals and romantic jacuzzi nights, and private enough for you to come and go from the beaches and the city at your own pace. The best of both worlds, truly. Shari and Bert are lovely hosts with obvious experience in hospitality. I'd be back in a heartbeat!

I had the most amazing weekend bringing in my 21st birthday with a few girlfriends. Just a drive away from the beach, shopping, and dining. Truly a wonderful, relaxing, and very private cottage. Shari is very sweet and helpful. She had a list of places we might want to checkout, which was very nice. Overall awesome weekend!

I stayed here for an entire week and it suited my needs. I was there to do some writing and the location is relatively secluded so there are few distraction and the grounds are nice, plenty of trees, a very nice nature setting. The description is accurate. and Topanga State park is less than a 7 minute drive, so you can get in a hike or trail run easily enough. Malibu and Santa Monica are nearby for further activity and restaurants. Shari and Bert are very friendly and accommodating and their two dogs, Maggie and Buffalo, are friendly and quiet. However, there are some practical inconveniences if you are going to stay here any longer than a few days. 1. It is inconvenient to book and pay; the owners only accept credit cards through Pay-pal (and most credit cards will decline a Pay-pal transaction because of a high fraud risk, mine did). Also, they wanted me to cover the 3% transaction fee, which in hindsight I should have balked at; it is not my problem if you don't have a convenient payment system. Also, the owners wanted the balance in cash, I don't know about you, but I don't use cash and it is a major inconvenience to do so; I can't earn miles or points with cash. Get an online merchant account, they are dirt cheap. Also, the owners actually wanted you to sign and fax the agreement back, which is overkill. Just send the agreement, if the customer pays, the have agreed to the terms by default. 2. Time to spruce the place up bit. The carpet needs to steam cleaned (actually, probably needs to be replaced) and power wash the outside. More of an FYI, there is only one sink that must do double duty as the kitchen and bathroom sink. That wasn't so much of a problem, but you should be aware. 3. There was some lack of attention to detail; there should have been basic condiments supplied in the kitchen, salt, pepper, oil, etc. The sound system they have is nice and all, but it only works with CD's. Time to upgrade to IPOD compatibility. You should know - The location is right off of Topanga Canyon Blvd (State Route 27), so you will have traffic noise throughout the day, but at night it does get quiet. Shari and Bert are very nice, but I am hard pressed to think if I would stay here again. It is good for a couples retreat or an individual looking for a relatively distraction free stay. Some upgrades and changes would be nice.

Very cute and relaxing little cottage nestled in the trees. I would go back again in a heartbeat! Shari is a very accomodating hostess and made us feel extremely welcome. Cottage is cosy and well equipped. TV with premium channels and wireless internet works well and there was a great selection of DVDs in the drawer. The private hot tub on our deck was a welcome treat after days spent touring college campuses with our daughter... and way better than going back to a hotel! Close enough to drive to everything but feels far away from it all. Steps to the cottage are quite steep so bear that in mind if you have trouble getting around. Froggy's mexican restaurant was fun and within walking distance... just sorry we weren't there on a night when they had the band playing.

My boyfriend & I desperately needed a vacation and had a great time staying at Shari's cottage, the space was perfectly ready for us when we arrived and we quickly settled into our weekend getaway. Shari also let us bring our 10-lb dog and I can't express how appreciative we are! We had the best time enjoying the beauty & calm of Topanga Canyon, the shops & beaches of Malibu and the warmth & comfort of a cottage nestled nature. Highly recommended, thank you!!!

We wanted to escape Chicago winter and thought "The Secret Garden" would be a great place to do just that...and it was! After a long drive cross-country, we arrived at the house in the evening and were greeted by Shari who showed us up the candlelit path to our secluded cabin on the hill. We loved the wooded property, wood-burning stove (which we lit during one of the few rainy days), and especially the hot tub on the deck! We loved the proximity to Topanga and Malibu—hiking, beach trips, dinner at Inn of the Seventh Ray and more. Thank you for an amazing stay.

We had the lovely pleasure of staying here for our mini-moon (we're locals) and we couldn't have been happier. The setting is peaceful, romantic and serene. Plus, you have the great company (if you want) of happy Buffalo, the "Nana" (dog from Peter Pan) of the property. The location is far enough away from the city that you have an escape, but close enough to the beach and Malibu to have a few seaside adventures. I highly recommend staying here. Shari and Bert will take care of you.

From the moment we arrived we were surrouned by the most beautiful landscape and atmospere, Shari has a magical touch when it come to making you feel welcome, and the property is clearly very well looked after. I would love to talk about every wonderful detail of our stay here, but i do not want to spoil the suprise, however you do get plenty of help and advise from Shari. You are just a 5 min drive from malibu beach, and the places recommended to eat by Shari are really great. It is also just a half hour drive from universal stuidios, which was great. What i will say however is that we loved our time here, and were truly sad to leave it behind we will be going again hopefully very soon! Also the pictures just do not capture the wonderful surrounding's, it is far more lovely than you can tell. Enjoy your time here

Because of the views, I couldn’t help but start each day with a relaxing soak in the hot-tub … cup of coffee in tow. The proximity to the beach and Calabasas, where the MethodFest was taking place, had me wondering why someone would stay in a hotel if given the choice. Shari was the best, and such a gracious hostess. Her decoration of the quaint cottage had me feeling right at home. Staying here was certainly a good choice on my part.

We highly recommend this place and would love to stay here again. For quiet time away, it is practically a destination in itself. It well matched the way it was described. The owners live on site and are very thoughtful, caring and helpful. While the unit is very well updated, it is an old cottage, and the floor plan, etc., reflects that (e.g., small bathroom, closet and kitchen). For us, though, these aspects were part of its strong charm. We loved spending time here. It feels very secluded, away from things, idyllic. The interior design is perhaps the best non-professional decorating job I've seen, and beats most professional jobs too, because of its easy, informal charm.

I only have one suggestion, if you stay in the winter please make sure your bring enough wood up for the fire it does tend to get chilly at night. Over all it was a great experience.

I stayed (March 07) at the cottage for almost a week and wish it could have been two. Frazzled from just having moved house in London, more tired than I knew, I instantly felt safe and soothed. You are left privately alone, but the visits from family pets (especially appreciated was Salem the lucky black cat) remind you that the friendly care of the owners is just a few walkways away. Famously the bringer of freak weather conditions to LA, I got to see snow fall as I stood on terrace. It is a beautiful spot, so much so it would be easy to settle in and not venture out, but you should. It took me a couple of days to get the hang of hairpin bends in a rental car on the wrong (yes, wrong) side of the road, but I had the hang of it soon enough. Go for dinner at the fairy-lit romantic Inn of the Seventh Ray one night, and celeb-sophisticated Moonshadows on the beach at Malibu another. The treatments at the Sienna salon in Topanga Village are as good as anything I've paid three times the price for in London. I hope to stay here again.

My girlfriend and I recently stayed here for a week and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Right from the first contact to book our stay to the time we left we were treated with genuine care and personal touches that are unmatched in any area of guest services! The property was beautiful with lots of trees that ensured privacy. The cottage was spacious, cozy, and the decor was amazing. Pam made numerous comments about the exquisite bedding, and large fluffy towels. After a busy day out the highlight of the stay was coming back to unwind in the jacquzzi look at the stars and enjoy some music from the outdoor stereo system! I am glad I found this cottage, and I would HIGHLY recommend it for any type of getaway! We will definitely be back! Timothy and Pam
