Did Not Live Up to Expectations
The photos from VRBO for this 4 bedroom 2 bath cottage within a 2 minute walk of the ocean and the barrier island downtown Vero Beach were good. The photos are misleading and must have been taken a few years prior. The home is close to the water and to restaurants and activities on the barrier island and very convenient for walking to the beach or bike riding. Pets were allowed which was a big plus. The owner was very accommodating to our requests via phone, email and text. The home is a fine place for a group of kids to rent and hang out, but not really great for a family or long term stay. We would not rent the "cottage" again. The house requires a lot of repairs, The home was dirty and very dark. In the event of an emergency, there is only one entrance/exit and that is at the front of the house. The rug in the front room was filthy, smelly and stained. The beds are in poor condition and one of them was up on cinder blocks. The house is air conditioned but the back part of the house is an add-on. So while the back part of the house is a refrigerator, but the front of the house, kitchen and living room do not get cooled. Consequently we had to buy fans to augment the ceiling fans that are in that portion of the house. The kitchen stove is barely functional and the stove fan is hanging down on lose wires, non functional. Pots and pans were very limited and strewn about in the cupboards. The rear bathroom has a fan hanging from the ceiling very close to one's head with its wires exposed. The yard was mowed but not maintained and one must dodge overgrown plants to walk into the backyard or move the trash out. Next door are two other rentals of similar construction, but appear to be much better maintained as we discovered during our stay. The owner lives out of state and does not seem to get down there much. In our view this is a cottage for a group of young people to rent who only care about having a roof over their heads and a shower and bathroom. If you are looking for more, we would recommend shopping around.

Owner response: We have rented our beach cottage to some really fine people, including this guest. Not sure what he was expecting (the Ritz?), but the house is in good shape and equivalent to any beach rental I've ever rented. Unfortunately, 99% of other guests (1st timers, returnees, and guest referrals) did not take the time to write up their positive thoughts....... Please note the following corrections: Pictures are current. Not sure about the "not for families" comment. Families are 95% of our guests. House has 4 exits, one on each side of house (front door, side porch sliding door, rear sliding door behind low bookshelf, and kitchen exit to garage and side walkway where trashcans are kept). House professionally cleaned after each guest exits ($150 cleaning fee reqd). If HVAC fan is left on (as we do when we are there), air is distributed evenly throughout the house. Very comfortable even in FL summers. Yard mowed weekly by a local. Houses on either side are NOT rentals- one is vacant and has been on the market for years; the other is owned and visited by one family.
