WHOSE HOUSE
THE MADELINE ISLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MEMBER
Smith’s ‘Whose House’ is a lovely hideaway surrounded by old Norway pines over 125’ tall. It is on the western shore of Madeline Island (2.5 miles from LaPointe) and provides a wonderful view of the sunset. Guests enjoy great swimming and water sports. The water temperature even reached 80F a few times in 2006! Renters often return and also come for more than one week to enjoy all that Madeline Island has to offer.
The cottage has a large, comfortable living room with a big stone fireplace, two bedrooms, a complete kitchen, and a bathroom with shower. The living room is surrounded by windows on 3 sides and opens onto a large deck that overlooks the lake, about 175 feet away.
Beach chairs and water toys are kept near the dock and renters can walk along the shore to Grant’s Point. The beach is sandy and one can walk into the lake a long way out past the end of the dock, which is shared with the owners of the cottage. There is a swing seat under the trees next to the beach and a bench on the end of the dock.
There are many things to do on the island and in Bayfield. A few years ago the Chicago Tribune picked Bayfield as the #1 vacation spot in the Midwest! The Madeline Island Ferry makes its 20 minute trip between Bayfield and Madeline Island every 30-60 minutes from early morning to late at night during the summer months.
The island boasts a well-stocked public library with children’s story hours, books, videos, DVD’s, and internet access. The Madeline Island Historical Museum is a must visit for the whole family. There are several restaurants on the island whose food is uniformly excellent.

Owner's Map of Madeline Island
We both grew up in northern Wisconsin (Ashland & Washburn). Marjorie’s parents bought property on Madeline in 1934. The original ‘Whose House’ was bought by friends at the same time and later sold to her parents in 1952. It was then remodeled and has been rented ever since. The Smith’s became owners of the property in 1976 and continue to maintain and update the cottage.
Myron is a retired dentist and Marjorie a retired nursing professor. We live in Rochester, Minnesota, but spend our summer months on Madeline. The island remains a very special place for our whole family.

The perfect cottage in the woods--with Lake Superior views and easy access. Beautifully maintained property! Hiking, kayaking, beautiful sunsets, sand beaches. The town of LaPointe has several good restaurants, coffee shops and convenience stores ---the cottage kitchen is well-stocked and there is a gas grill outside. Owners available and very helpful---I would return again and again---perfect for adults or families. Madeline Island is a beautiful retreat---beginning with the ferry boat transport to the island, it is an Adventure. Bicycle rentals available with miles of roads to explore.

We had such an excellent vacation at the cottage that we signed up for another week next year! The cottage is clean, nicely decorated and very comfortable. The hosts made us feel very welcome and gave us great tips on day trips and activities on the island. The beach is one of the best we have ever swam from. We really enjoyed watching the baby eagles and the great sunsets from the dock. We would highly recommend this property for a vacation desitination!
Owner response:Hi Karen & Bruce, Thank you for your wonderful review of the cottage. We look forward to seeing you again next year. Sincerely, Marjorie & Myron

This lovely cottage on Madeline Island did not disappoint our expectations. I had been seeking a place that reminded me of the cottages of the past but with modern amenities plus a pretty woodland/lake setting. I and my family found the property very welcoming and was impressed that it had been keep in tip top condition, even the floors in the cottage shone! We loved the comfortable furnishings and hand sewn pillows, curtains and quilts. There were even red geraniums growing out on the deck. As for the water, it was relatively warm for Superior as we were there June, 2011. There is a wide clean beach and dock which we used almost every day. We did take advantage of the kayaks and beach toys which offered us hours of entertainment too. The eagle family that roosted near by was an added treat along with a baby mink who scampered across the beach one morning. We loved the location of the property because it is far enough away from the town for privacy but close enough to run to the local stores with in minutes. We hope to return next year, it is that sort of place.
Owner response:Hi Jamie, Thank you for the great review, we appreciated having your here and enjoy meeting you very much. Hope to see you next year. Thanks again. Sincerely, Marjorie & Myron Smith

I'm so happy we discovered this amazing vacation cottage. We've enjoyed two wonderful vacations at Whose House so far and plan to return again next year. The beaches on Madeline are among the finest in the world and the beach here is no exception: fine sand, crystal-clear water and gorgeous views. We really enjoyed exploring the shore line with our nine-year old in a kayak provided by the Smiths. The cottage is set back on a hill a good distance from the lake, which is nice if you have young children who are not yet water-savvy. A large stone fireplace dominates the spacious main room and its exterior walls are lined with windows providing an intimate view of the surrounding pine forest. The kitchen is small but completely functional with new appliances and counter-top. On the whole, the cottage is clean and tastefully furnished, a pleasant mix of Scandinavian design and Island spirit.
