Ameliasburg cottage description
This all season, waterfront, executive, country home faces westward over the lake to tree covered, pristine sand dunes. The house is nestled amongst majestic 150 year old trees and is located just off the oldest road in Ontario. A large treed area across the road from the house complete with marshy inlets and historic 19th century relics is excellent for walking, birdwatching, fishing, biking, paint-balling or birdwatching. There is a major 40km bike trail by the cottage which goes to Picton. Located in scenic Ameliasburg, in Prince Edward County, Ontario, the fully furnished home is spacious and cozy. The lakefront on the property is ideal for families and children, and also has the atmosphere for a girls weekend, small corporate retreat or a romantic getaway.
The 2,000 square foot bungalow has three generous bedrooms and two full bathrooms, including an en-suite. There is a large 20 by 24 foot living room with cathedral ceiling and large stone fireplace, a six person dining room, a fully equipped eat-in kitchen with dishwasher, stove with oven and microwave. The house has central air and vacuum, and in winter is fully heated. There is a covered deck and a large open deck off the living room, complete with a four person hot tub. A heated out building near the deck is a games room, complete with a pool table, table tennis, foos-ball and a dart board. The house comes complete with use of a gas barbeque, firepit, 16 foot canoe, 12 ft fishing boat with outboard motor inflatable dingy, fishing rods, bad-mitton set, lawn chairs and bicycles. Some firewood is provided.
Relax and listen to the rustling leaves as a warm wind gently blows over your body. Sip a cocktail at the water's edge as the sun slowly sets over the water and dunes. Later, have a campfire in the firepit, bask in the hot tub, listen to the stereo, watch a movie, sing karaoke or play pool.
Play family games and sports on the lush grassed area on the property and later cool down with a swim in the shallow sand bottom lake waters.
This home is completely self sufficient with linens, bedding and supplies provided. All you have to do is just bring your bathing suits and camera.
In the morning, the first thing you will notice is the singing of the birds. In August, sit in the hot tub and watch stars fall from the milky way. In fall and winter, build a warm fire in the stone fireplace and curl up with a good book and a glass of local wine. Great in winter too - cozy, skiing and snowboarding nearby.
The local area is unique and captivating. Enjoy the world class sand beaches of Prince Edward County. North Beach is within 10 minutes and Sandbanks Beach is 25 minutes away. Go birdwatching at nearby world famous Presquille Provincial Park. Numerous local wineries provide samplings, tours, wine sales and fine dining. Go golfing at one of the many of the local golf courses, including Timber Ridge one of Canada's top 100 courses. Shop, dine or enjoy a cultural event such as an art gallery, museum, or cafe in one of the quaint historic towns such as Bloomfield, Wellington or Picton.
Visit an agricultural Fair such as the Milford Fair or buy local produce, meat, vegetables or baked goods from a local farm. In winter enjoy walks on the nearby beaches or adjacent woods, cross country skiing, downhill skiing/snowboarding,snowmobiling and the many local winter cultural events, health spas, and fine dining.

Boy Friendly Cottage
Thanks for the "Boy Friendly" cottage -the games shed was super fun. Found a great beach across the bay with the canoe, and loved the waves at North Beach. Great fire pit for hot dogs and marshmallows too!

A Thanksgiving worth being thankful for
A Thanksgiving worth being thankful for
We rented this cottage for the Thanksgiving weekend along with a friends birthday weekend. The place is spacious and I personally loved the kitchen. It was a great space to work in and get a Thanksgiving dinner on the table. As it is October we did not rent this cottage for the waterfront so cannot comment on that area. There are many nice features of this place. It was not exactly what we had envisioned or expected but it was the perfect place for our needs. I would rent this cottage again.

Recommended for: Romantic getaway.
We enjoyed our week at the Alexander cottage and found it a boy-friendly abode with the games room shed (table tennis, darts, pool table), outdoor firepits, and the canoe to use at the shore. Across the bay by canoe the boys found a lovely beach. Within a ten minute drive is the day use North Beach Provincial Park (great waves) and in the other direction Presqu'ile Provincial Park (great trails, a lighthouse, visitor's centres, and a beach). We also enjoyed an afternoon at the National Air Force museum in nearby Trenton. This cottage is great if you are willing to drive to a real beach, and don't mind driving to Trenton or Brighton for groceries. At Carrying Place is a friendly little restaurant for breakfast or lunch, called the Mason Jar. I appreciated that the bathrooms in the cottage were spotless, and that the kitchen had all the necessary tools and pots and pans to cook with. Yes there were spiders, but there have been spiders at every cottage I've ever rented... they are part of rural life, and there were brooms available on deck to remove the spiders from the outdoor furniture when necessary. We never used the hot tub or sauna, but they might be nice in cooler weather. As to wheelchair accessibility, this cottage would work if you had a manual chair, but not a power chair as there are a few steps up to the front door... but they are wide and low so you can easily bump up them one at a time. The back stairs onto the deck are higher and the sliding deck door sill probably wouldn't work for a wheelchair but the cottage itself is all one level and open enough to get around in a wheelchair. The master bedroom ensuite was open enough to transfer from a wheelchair to the toilet with a few steps. The showers are not accessible for a wheelchair user. Another nice feature was the internet access and the Xbox connection for the TV to watch DVDs ... we enjoyed some evening movies after our fires and board games... although admittedly we never figured out how to use the satellite TV... it's not something we have at home and so we didn't really miss it. If you want a cottage with a beach outside the door, this one isn't for you... but if you are willing to drive to North Beach to find great waves for swimming, you should enjoy this cottage and location. The neighbourhood is quiet and there are many enjoyable features here (games room shed, canoe, fire pits, nearby biking trail). Thanks for a lovely week!

My friends and I booked this cottage for a weekend and had an excellent time. The hot tub worked great and the beds were all comfortable. The kitchen was great for cooking as there were lots of dishes, pots/pans and cutlery. We enjoyed the living area, it was nice and open with plenty of seating room for the 8 of us. If you are looking for a nice and quiet time where you can enjoy yourself and relax, I would definitely recommend this cottage.

We stayed in this cottage around the end of september, the place was roomy, and it included everything you need. Perfect getaway if you're looking for peace and quiet, and also for something that can entertain you - game room was excellent and the backyard is huge, will definitely come again. The hot tub was a plus :)

An okay place for a family gathering.
An okay place for a family gathering.
We rented this cottage for a Thanksgiving weekend family gathering. It was a good choice for our first gathering of this type; the location was excellent, the games room and hot tub much enjoyed, and we had a good time with some vineyard tours, of course. The kitchen was large enough for all of us, there were plenty of chairs, dishes, pots and pans as well. Beds were comfortable, there were plenty of towels. We all had a good time, but will not rent this cottage again. It has not been maintained adequately over the years and as a result is in poor repair. It smells of musty damp basement, there is mold on the shelf in a closet of blankets, a closet door fell off and landed on my grandson, the kitchen floor is "springy" from a weak joist and the windows and window sills are dirty. I wrote to the owner to tell him about these concerns, he didn't seem much interested. A shame, he's neglecting to maintain a great investment.

Owner response: I have 20 to 25 guests per year and have had over 125 guests in total at the cottage and this guest is the first guest to complain about maintenance. I looked to see if there was mould. There was not. There was a little mildew in one spot where someone put a wet towel in the closet. It was easily wiped up. There was no musty smell when I attended the cottage so I can't confirm the guest's comment about a musty smell. In terms of the door the guest never mentioned it to me so suspect their child did something inappropriate that dislodged the door. I did take note of her concerns and at no time did I show dis-interest. I care about my cottage. Note that the guest enjoyed their visit.
Not as advertised
Not as advertised
We have rented countless properties in North Am. and have never had this problem. This property is NOT as advertised. We could not swim in the lake. The owner wrote "...and later cool down with a swim in the shallow sand bottom lake waters." in his description. The lake waters in front of the property DO NOT have a sand bottom. In fact, it's far from it. Instead you will find a sludge like bottom, full of weeds, grass and many frogs. It's swamp like. We were not made aware of this until our arrival when we went down to the lake. His solution was to go to a nearby beach. I'm sorry, but that is not why we rent a lakefront property and pay a premium for it so we can pack up our 2 year old & 7 year old to go to the beach. We could have stayed home and done that. We pay for the convenience of having the lake to swim in right there. We had also rented the boat, but upon arrival we found a note saying that the water was too low so we could not use it. We understand that water levels can recede, however, we feel it is the owner's responsibility to be on top of this and to be forthcoming with the info thus giving the renters the option to cancel, should we wish. It is not an executive cottage in its current state. There is a closet door off the tracks, cobwebs throughout the house, the showers are not clean, there is a leak in the fridge which caused damage to some of our baked goods and many other little things that make this house not executive level. We wanted to leave immediately, but didn't want to disrupt my oldest son's birthday which was the next day so chose to stay 2 nights and leave Mon. since we got there late Sat. night. We scrambled to find other accomodations and were out of pocket to do so. We asked for a refund, as well as a return of the boat rental and damage deposit. He agreed. After 3 weeks of saying "the cheque was in the mail" we received a partial refund with no further explanation. He agreed to the refund, boat rental and damage deposit, but did not return the full amount and currently have $450 still owing to us. We now have to contact a 3rd party to resolve this issue. We could make do with the condition of the house, but don't describe it as "executive" and certainly tell the renters what the lake is truly like. We could have made do if we didn't want a lake to swim/boat in. However, I would not recommend this rental based on how unprofessional the owner has been in not being forthcoming, not responding and returning our full refund.

Owner response: Some people in life are never satisfied and nothing you do will make them happy. This person was the worst guest I have ever had and only guest ever to complain about the water level or quality. I have been renting this cottage out since 2006 and have had over 125 guests in that time. When she arrived at the cottage I was contacted and she informed me she was only staying 2 days and demanded a full refund for 5 days because the water level was low and a beach that had formed. I pointed out to her that I could not control the water level and the weather had been unusually hot and dry causing the lake level to drop. I said that there was two beautiful, large sandy beaches (North and Pesquille Beach) very close(5-7 minutes) from the cottage. She said she wasn't interested in going to those beaches. That response was unreasonable as these beaches are very close to the cottage and very beautiful. When I visited the cottage after the guest left they had left the cottage quite dirty and I spent considerable time cleaning up. Despite the unreasonable attitude of this guest and the poor clean up by them I gave her a substantial refund. Despite the significant refund given by me she wanted more of a l refund for the low water level which is out of my control. The guest's characterization of the beach being "sludge" is completely unfair and in fact slanderous. Sludge is defined as an industrial waste product. That is a very unfair and inaccurate characterization. The lake bottom is a fine brown/grey sand. There is sand bars and dunes adjacent the cottage across the bay. In terms of weeds, a few short reeds had grown because of the sudden drop in water level. Lake reeds are not normally a problem. Despite being responsive and giving the guest a substantial refund that she kept contacting me by sending me harassing emails and phone calls after the refund was given. Some people are unreasonable and cannot be satisfied no matter what you do.
A Wonderful Weekend
A Wonderful Weekend
My family and I enjoyed a wonderful weekend at Alexander Cottage! The water-front property is beautiful and the cottage/house is lovely. We especially enjoyed the back deck and the hot tub ... actually some of us spent most of the weekend in the hot tub. The kitchen is well-equiped, the diningroom has a beautiful view, and the family room has LOTS of entertainment equipment!!!
