About the Owners

Benyamin and Rabia van Hattum have lived a creative life in Abiquiu raising their 5 lively children over the last 30 years.
Born in the Netherlands, Benyamin completed formal cabinet making at London City & Guild College in the United Kingdom. He was offered a position in Abiquiu as the master woodworker on Dar al Islam’s Medressa complex designed by the Egyptian architect Hasan Fathy.

After completing 4 years on that project, he received so many private orders that he established his own business Andaluz Woodwork in 1988. After 20 years of producing furniture and architectural detail integrating traditional design into contemporary applications, he and Rabia began building and remodeling homes in northern New Mexico based on the design features and traditions in their portfolio of travels to Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Mali, Morocco, Spain, Syria and the Balkans.

Rabia spent many years managing Andaluz Woodwork and serving her community creating and implementing her own programs including a tutoring program for children at the local public library, summer and after school arts programs for disadvantaged youth, cultural education programs of international storytelling and folk music, and ABC! (Arts of Boost Curriculum) using kinesthetic and spatial expression to motivate student learning.

Services Offered

They are especially knowledgable of the magnificent surrounding areas where they live and have led many different hiking groups onto magical routes not in the guide books. They are able to offer every level of walks and hikes for any type of person or families. Rabia’s enjoys engaging with children in mixed media art projects. For a reasonable fee they can offer these services to visitors to make their visit a fulfilling and memorable one.

Long needed vacation!

Many thanks to Rabia and Benyamin for their hospitality at their wonderful vacation home away from the stressors of life! The house was beautiful with all the woodwork done by Benyamin and very clean. We had everything needed to prepare our own meals when we wanted. Rabia provided us with fresh veggies from her garden, a delicious treat. The atmosphere was very soothing. We enjoyed the landscaped gardens and the walks to the river behind the house. The location was perfect for all our side trips. The seclusion and peacefulness were exactly what we were looking for. We hope to return again in the future and want to bring our family with us the next time as Rabia and Benyamin have additional accommodations nearby. Casa Granada was perfect for my husband and I and we were very pleased with EVERYTHING. My suggestions would be for an I-pod docking station and a swing by the river :)

Everything that you could possible wish for, except noise and crowds

This lovely house is exactly as described and exactly as pictured, except that pictures cannot do justice to both the house, and the setting. Owner is a master craftsman and every inch of the small house is lovingly created. Wonderful woodwork, hand-made furniture, including the bed, and warm and tasteful Mexican tiles throughout. Colorful Kyrgyzstan hangings and carpets blend in so well. Large ceiling fans were effective in the heat of the day. Combine the lovely house with the view and the setting, and it was very hard to ever want to leave the property. It is the last house in a little settlement of homes, so no signs of civilization are visible from the porch, kitchen, or yard. Just marvelous scenery everywhere you look. What a wonderful place it was to watch stars, sunsets, sunrises, and dramatic thunderstorms. Thought the Casita is down a very quiet road, it is near everything! A short walk or a three minute drive to a general store and cafe, a hub of the area. One and half hours to Taos by wonderful back roads, half hour to Espanola for restaurants and shopping, an hour from Santa Fe; also short drives from Bandolier (cliff dwellings), Los Alamos, and many other local sights and hikes. And right across the street, as mentioned, is Plaza Blanca, a beautiful, peaceful place for viewing, walking, absorbing the beauty and quiet. Ghost Ranch, Abiquiu Lake, the list goes on. Owners Rabia and Benyamin were totally accommodating. We had Internet problems and when hosts were called, help was immediate and effective. There was a new router the next day! Especially impressive when you consider that we were out in the countryside. We enjoyed every minute and hope to go back someday.

HoneyMoon Revisted

Guest: NOTravelers (Alabama)
Date of Stay: 05/20/11 Review Submitted: 05/30/11

We have stayed in the amazing casa granada twice now, once in the summer of 2010 (for a brief honeymoon weekend getaway) and now again in the spring of 2011 for a week--and we cannot wait to come back yet again. Truly this is a magnificent and magical place!...The view and soft sounds of the river in the background (just a few short steps to its banks), the soaring views of the red rock mountain, the small birds nest filled with spring chicks, and the lovely rosebushes exploding with color outside the front door left us feeling filled with wonder and happiness. The casita had all the amenities we needed while away from home from the well stocked kitchen to wifi, and the decorative touches, from the custom furniture to the art work from Kyrgyzstan was a source of great inspiration to be topped by nothing but the endless and stunning stars we gazed at nightly from the sweet landscaped private front yard. We will be back to visit your little paradise again soon!
