Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2005
About the owners:
We are one brother and two sisters who reside in the coastal town of Santa Cruz, California. We were born and raised here, and have chosen to live in Santa Cruz to raise our own children and live with our large extended family close-by. Both of our parents are of Italian heritage, and our father’s grandparents (and generations before them) were born in Lucca. We feel a great fondness for Italian culture, language, and people, and continue to enjoy spending time with our Italian cousins in Italy.
The Unique Benefits of this Apartment
I love shopping in the neighborhood, with the butcher, bakery, vegetable, and cheese shops right around the corner. There are relatively few cars inside the wall, and most people choose to walk or ride bikes. The residents of Lucca are so nice! All the shopkeepers I've encountered will go out of their way to help you find what you need. Perhaps my favorite part of Lucca is the wall... it's a treasure! It encloses the historical center of the city and is a glorious 2.5 miles around, with a generously wide walk/bike path, and lovely trees and parks. From the apartment it is an easy walk to either the train or bus station... perfect if you choose to take a day trip to Viareggio, Florence, Pisa, or any of the wonderful Tuscan villages nearby. It feels really great to return to our Lucca apartment at the end of each day's excursion as the apartment itself is so comfortable. It's a great place to rest, cook, check your email, or read... a real haven!

We love Lucca! We had a wonderful stay in this perfectly-located apartment. A short walk brought us to the wall, a beautiful fountain to fill our water bottles, a cafe, and most importantly, a gelateria! We took easy day trips to nearby towns like Pisa and Levanto. A local cooking instructor came to the apartment and taught us how to prepare local recipes in the well-equipped kitchen (highly recommend that activity!). And, of course, we enjoyed walks and bike rides on Lucca's famous wall!

Lucca has got to be the best small city in Italy in which you can live simply and well. It is the right size for walking; there is beauty everywhere you turn; there is variety in shopping for food, clothing and gifts; there are great restaurants and bars; and, above all, it is food and music heaven. After all, we are in Tuscany and there is no better cuisine; and it is the home of Puccini who is especially honored in May at concerts that include not only his music but that of other composers as well, and, in summer, it hosts a fabulous music festival studded with contemporary artists. As for the apartment, it is beautiful, well stocked and has a fabulous location. The best of everything seems to be within a block - the best gelato, the best butcher with the best prosciutto, the best leather workers, the best cappuccino and pastry, the best pizza, the best cooking lessons that come to your apartment, and a marvelous restaurant just around the corner. In fact, you can see the patio umbrellas of the restaurant from the apartment's bathroom window. The ancient wall that surrounds Lucca is like a linear park with big beautiful trees and lots of benches; access to the wall is easy from several places. And it is all so simple - it's only about a mile and a half from one end of town to another, so you can walk to anywhere in town, come home, take a siesta, go out again for an afternoon stroll or to run some errands, come home, have dinner and go out again for an after-dinner stroll. Oh, and yes, there is plenty of sightseeing to be done in Lucca, but you might want to do as we did when we were there last May. Throw away the guidebook and just enjoy being there.

I had the opportunity to stay in this apartment in May 2011. The description doesn't do it justice. The apartment is more than comfortable!!!! The location is perfect...easy walk within the wall and out as well as walkable to the train and bus stations. The apartment is very modern with plenty of room for several guests. The kitchen was efficient and the dining area ample. We used Lucca as our base and enjoyed day trips to Florence, Bagna di Lucca, Viareggio, Barda, Pisa. I would recommend this property to EVERYONE!!!

This apartment is in a wonderful section of Lucca, off the beaten path. I spent 3 weeks here and staying here you will get the opportunity to live like an Italian. The enoteca, macelleria, panetteria, GELATERIA, and fruitivendoli are all right nearby, and they get to know you right away. (Say hi to Momo!) There are great restaurants, pizzerias and cafe/bars (for your morning ncappucino and pastry) right around the corner. The street market is nearby and the apartment has everything you need to feel right at home. It's casual and comfortable. You can take a passeggiata on the wall or ride the bikes thru town. The bathrooms are comfortable and well appointed, as is the kitchen. The area is quiet at night, but close to fun (the museum at the corner had free concerts on Friday nights while I was there). Lucca is my new fave spot in Italy, and this apartment is a great place to settle in. It's really easy to go to Florence or Pisa or Viarregio or Cinque Terre for the day using the local trains, and the busses go up into the sweet hill towns (Barga and Bagna di Lucca). Fabulous! (Oh, and the apartment has screens on the windows so you won't be pestered by mosquitos!)

We really enjoyed that this apartment is in a neighborhood filled with local families – very near the obelisk of Madonna Stellario, and the ancient Via del Fosso canal. The apartment still has its original 15th century ceiling (beautiful!), but we found it completely modernized in every other way. It has a fully stocked kitchen with gas range, dishwasher, cast-iron cookware, and a generous supply of dishware. We actually threw a small dinner party while there! The apartment is clean, well organized, and really comfortable. The beds are new, the linens fresh, and the apartment includes a clothes washer and heated drying racks which made washing and drying clothes, even in the winter, really easy. As we were lucky with weather, we had a chance to take the bicycles out on rides around the wall. We stayed for two weeks in January and felt right at home. Most definitely will stay here again!

We stayed in this wonderful apartment in June of 2008. We could not have had better accomadations. The apartment is beautiful, you can tell it is newly remodeled. THe bikes are a great feature because Lucca is a cycling city. Alicia met us at the train station and gave us a tour of the town as we walked to the apartment. The town of Lucca was perfect after a few days in busy Florence. Don't miss a Puccini concert while staying in Lucca.

We stayed in this lovely apartment for a week in June 2007 and had a fabulous time in Lucca! The apartment had everything we needed to prepare some great Tuscan food! Riding the bikes around the top of the wall in the evening was very special. We will definitely be back!
