We had a group of nine stay at Oceano from March 21-27, 2013- with room to spare! What a great location! We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay during our time in Costa Rica. Only a little more than an hour drive from the San Jose airport, Oceano offered us the solace that we were seeking during our stay. The housekeeper, Bernie, and her husband, Ronald, were fantastic! Bernie is a great cook! We really enjoyed having her cook for us during our stay. It saved us a ton of money, yet allowed us to experience home cooked Tico food! Ronald chopped us open some coconuts for fresh coconut water (YUM!) and took us to feed the wild monkeys. The monkeys were definitely a hit with our whole group- so make sure you do this with Ronald! While Bernie & Ronald are not fluent in English, we were not fluent in Spanish so it was fun to practice our Spanish while they practiced their English. It was like a mini-lesson every day! And let's not forget Macha! What an awesome dog! She would accompany us to the beach and stay with our stuff and sit quietly with us as we enjoyed our morning coffee on the lanai. She loves to give paw- and did so every chance she got! We really enjoyed having her around! The beach at the end of the property was the best beach we experienced in Costa Rica. I noted that another reviewer stated that the beach was "unusable"- but we didn't think this was the case! The sand was super soft, the water was warm and there were no rocks or shells in the sand! When we went to Jaco & the Isle of Tortuga, the sand in the ocean was so rocky that it made it hard to walk! The waves weren't big enough to surf, but they were big enough for boogey boarding! The beach hardly had anyone on it. We saw may be 4-5 people total per day. It was like having our own private beach! If you are looking for a great beach vacation in Costa Rica, Oceano is the place for you! It's like staying at a five star resort for half the price! Bernie, Ronald & Macha will make sure your stay is worth every penny. You won't be disappointed!

Owner response: Hi Sarah; we absolutely loved hosting your group! It is wonderful to hear that you enjoyed the things our property has to offer. You are so right that our beach is nice soft sand and empty of other people. We love watching the stunning sunsets from the beach. Ronald and Bernie loved showing you the Costa Rican culture and food. Pura Vida! Come back anytime. Karin and Ruoi

A group of us traveled to Costa Rica during march break. Not knowing what to expect, we flew into San Jose and rented a vehicle. Rupi and Karin were super nice to meet us at the airport so that we wouldn't get lost when it got dark. Our rooms were very comfortable and each had its own en suite bathroom! Our pool was cleaned every day and we spent many hours relaxing and enjoying some beverages by the water. The value for our money was amazing considering other vacationers would be paying more than double staying at the Hilton DoubleTree just down the street. Amazing vacation, and I would definitely return for some more R & R in the future!

"Great week in paradise." We had a fabulous time. Our own private property right on the beach. The accomdations were very comfortable, they made you feel at home. It was very clean and well kept. The pool was outstanding. Amazing sunsets and early morning walks on the almost private beach. Great location, central to many attractions. Local restaurants (10-15 minutes away) with authentic Costa Rican food were great and extremely affordable. We had access to a private driver / tour guide who spoke perfect english, he was great. The caretakers were always available to tend to our needs. The owners hospitality made this a great vacation. It was very romantic. It is also a great place for the whole family. We will definitey be going back; with our kids.

What a great time we had here. It's the right place to get away from winter. We brought 12 people and had room to spare. The pool is beautiful and clean. We liked the dining room because it was large enough for all of us at once. The bedrooms were comfortable and clean. We felt very secure. The caretakers were very helpful and went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. I loved the ocean access. One week into January and the ocean felt like a bathtub. We body surfed for hours and never got cold. If you want a nice place to relax and play, I recommend it highly.

Owner response: Hola Don and Marie and family! We are very pleased to hear that your family enjoyed the house and the beach and the pool. It's a pleasure for us to host a family who finds the Costa Rican experience so enjoyable. We do thank you for taking such care with our home. We hope you or your friends and family will come visit us again. All tje best Rupi and Karin; Ronald and Bernie say hello too.

What a wonderful stay we had at Oceano. This is a great spot if you want to get away from the "all inclusive" and experience Costa Rica. The accomodations are spacious and no lack of bathrooms. Bernie and Ronald, the house and ground keepers, are such a wonderful couple. Bernie prepares your breakfast and dinner (an extra cost) but well worth it. You get to experience their cooking. It was great to wake up and coffee is ready and served on the patio. Ronald will come with you to show you the market for fresh fruit and vegetables and then take you to the fish market. He showed us a monkey farm that is nearby and the grandchildren really loved this. We can't forget about Macha the dog. This dog is well mannered and loved going to the beach with the grandchildren to jump in the waves. The beach is endless for long walks and it was nice to have your own pool. Bernie and Ronald keep the place very clean and are most accomodating. Bernie will even show you some of her cooking. I would suggest you rent a car for convenience and the roads are excellent.Thank you Rupi and Karen for meeting us and driving to show us where Oceano is, especially at night. We had a great stay and this is a great place to get a few couples together-space is no problem. Lots to do from zip lining to coffee plantations.

Owner response: Benny and Marilyn; thank you so much for your kind remarks. We all enjoyed having your family stay at our beach house. Bernie and Ronald really liked your family and every cultural exchange is a learning and enriching experience on both sides. We would love to see you or your friends and family again. All the best from Ronald and Bernie and owners Karin and Rupi. P.S. Macha says hola!

We were lucky enough to converge on this fabulous spot with 15 of our extended family members to celebrate the holidays. The property was excellent for children--the ocean and waves were mostly calm and provided a little extra excitement for the older kids on the two days when the waves permitted body surfing. The pool divine. Bearnie and Ronny are lovely care takers and it was so wonderful to be able to have someone help with the cooking and cleaning. A great location for families to relax and simply be!

Our extended family lives across North America, so securing an affordable place that could accommodate 17 of us was a great find. We spent 10 days at Oceana, enjoying a very tropical Christmas together. Wake up and coffee is ready on the patio. Bernie can serve eggs anyway you like them -- ask from them Costa Rican style. Fill up on exotic fruits, vegetable and exquisite fish. Our daughters loved learning traditional CR cooking from Bernie. Dinner preparation was like 'Cooking with NIgella'. Bernie demonstrated gallo pinto, soupa negra, tortilla de queso, arroz con polo and tamales. There is much to do in Costa Rica -- our kids and grandkids took many adventure tours. I confess to finding the beach, pool and saved up stack of novels so inviting I didn't venture far. The wife/husband team of Bernie and Ronaldo are shy with their English - as I am shy with my Spanish, but we had no trouble communicating. They both provided those little extra touches - like doing the children's laundry which made our experience 5 star. The bedrooms are simple but clean with good mattresses and sheets. The environment is very Costa Rican with roadside bars you can walk to. The Doubletree HIlton is walking distance down the road. Useful if you want to rent a car or if you fancy a massage but otherwise it's worth avoiding. The resident dog - a so well behaved golden lab - will have you feeling at home before your first cerveza.

Owner response: Thank you for your kind comments about our caretakers. I will pass it on to them. We are glad you enjoyed your Costa Rican experience. Thank you and we hope you let your friends and family know we would love to have you back. All the best Karin and Rupi

Karin and Rupi were kind enough to allow me to have my dream Beach wedding on their property for a group of 15. I had a budget and this home was great for the price. My wedding was a success and the pool was definitely a hit with my group. Karin answered emails and questions via email quickly, and at arrival we were taken very good care of by the caretakers. Bernie and her husband were wonderful, made us feel right at home. She cooked breakfast, dinner and packed us lunches for our excursions. I was a little disappointed with the beach when we arrived, there was trash along the coastline. It discouraged us from taking a dip in the ocean, but we were thankful for the wonderfully kept pool. Fortunately the wedding planner that I hired had a great crew that made it look good for my big day. Market is close by, including a little local bar and I was even able to take a quick taxi ride down the street to a hotel for some spa treatments. We also loved having the company of their dog "macha", hang out with us. This was a good choice and great for family gatherings.

Owner response: Hi Jazz; thank you for taking the time to review your stay at our property. We are very pleased that your wedding turned out so well. Ronald and Bernie really enjoyed taking care of your group and helping out with the wedding. The water here is lovely and fresh and our guests and ourselves use it daily. Plus as you know the sunsets viewed from our beach are amazing. It is good that you had help with preparing and tidying the beach. Our beach here in Puntarenas is public and we can only clean the strip in front of our property. We pick up any trash and plastic regularily, but after a strong wind or storm, some things generally get tossed up on the sand from out at sea. We hope to see you or your friends again. Pura Vida.

We arrived Saturday morning and were warmly greated by Bernie and Ronald the caretakers of the property as well as a warm welcome from Macha the owners dog. The property was as expected from the pictures and description. Rooms were clean. Pool was great. Bernie and Ronald were very helpful. Tour company sent to pick us up from airport and take us to the house was on time and friendly (but only because they wanted more business). They ended up being very pushy and after one tour with them we were done they charged an extremely large amount to get to tortula island only to arrive to a dirty beach and beach chairs even bathrooms were an additional fee. Tour was sold as everything included even lunch which they did provide and while lunch was good dessert was a marshmallow on a tooth pick. Same tour company referred us to a family owned liquor store who charged us $76.00 for 36 beers and 4 bags of ice. We were done with this company and I wish I could remember the name but all I remember is they have a fish on there vehicles. We found another tour company and would recommend them if you have less than 10 people. The company was pacific sun travel. The owners name is Jimmy he was very helpful but be aware of signing up for tours early in your stay for. Later in your stay we agreed to $30 per person for a ride to our hotel near the airport a walking tour of San Jose transportation to a restaurant on the hillside basically having a. Guide with us all day however all we wanted to do when we arrived in San Jose was relax so we paid $30 pp when the trip should have cost us $90.00 from the house to the hotel for the entire group we had 12 people. in closing we enjoyed the house (however did not get a change of lines mid week as advertised did get a setof towels midweek.). Paid for Bernie to cook and clean for 7 days and were not told by the owners she was off on Sunday or that she had an appointment on Monday so we had to cook for ourselvesa few meals. Probably our biggest disappointment was the beach. While property is on the beach it is a very unusable beach. Very dirty and we were told several times not to walk it alone to get to beach you had to go through bob wire fence. Also property is a minimum of one hour away from any activities.

Owner response: Dear Phil; thank you for taking the time to write a review. We appreciate feedback so we can improve our service where needed. We are sorry that Bernie missed cooking for you when she had the hospital appointment and we are going to refund some of your cooking money. We are glad you enjoyed our property. We are sorry to hear of your experience with that tour operator. Hope to see you and your family and friends again. All the best Karin and Rupi

Beach house rental idea this time was a great change for us. Our friends agree, this house was super for families, particularly those with small kids. One minute, the kids would be exploring the grounds and the next minute in the pool. We stayed at a beach house room, perfect for the 3 of us. Our friends stayed in the main house upstairs king and their kids in one of the twin rooms. The main house is roomy, airy and not lacking amenities. Bernie and Ronald are around when you need them. Always happy and accomodating to all of us and really patient with the kids. Thank you so much. By the sea, the waves can be rough at times, but you can walk on sand along the beach and quite far out without rocks to worry about. We did a day trip to Manuel Antonio national park- what a fantastic beach there as well as quite a few sloth sightings along the hike. Jaco for ATV rides and people watching and of couse a trip not too far from the house to the Monkey Lady's place. The kids really loved the monkeys grabbing the fruit right from their hands. Grocery stores are a short cab ride away. The fish market was handy too. Ronald will come with you! We walked along the street the house is on, not really much around there. Hospital and a few local watering holes. Macha the house doggie came with us on our beach walk to the Hilton. She always took care of us and in her own way, minded the kids. Macha slept outside our beach house door. We really loved her. Thank you, Karin and Rupi for greeting us and sending us off on our last day.

Absolutely wonderful vacation house. 5 of us stayed in this large, beautiful house. The caretakers on site made everything perfect. The pool was beautiful, the hammocks a relaxing touch and the covered patio was great when you wanted some refuge from the costa rican sun. The A/C in the bedrooms were a welcome contrast to the afternoons lying in the sun drinking fresh coconut and rum drinks prepared by the wonderful caretakers. We went on some tours and our guide couldn't have made the trips better. They added in extra shopping stops, gorgeous photo opps and even meal stops. The van was spacious and air conditioned. Upon returning from our outtings the caretakers would have meals ready and the evening lights in the pool turned on. We can't wait to return.

What a great house and property. Beautiful beachfront, private swimming pool and palm trees. The house is spacious, clean and every bedroom has it's own bathroom, a real bonus! For a small extra fee you can hire the housekeeper to cook for your group and do all the dishes, it is well worth it. This house and location is perfect for relaxing and swimming or if you feel adventurous, zip lining, surfing, hiking etc.I will definitely recommend to my friends, and probably return myself.

I stayed at Oceano for 3 weeks in January 2012. The property is stunning, with a beautiful pool, covered patio complete with BBQ and outdoor kitchen. The grassy area leading to the ocean has palm trees with hammocks. Great for a lazy afternoon of reading. The ocean is great for swimming, big waves at times. The house is spacious and clean and well equipped. The bedrooms are comfortable and each room has it's own bathroom. It's a great house for a large group. We had 12 people and there was plenty of room. If you want adventure there is no shortage of day trips, from ziplining to visiting monkeys! I will definitely return.

We had a fabulous time at Oceano! The house is spacious and immaculately clean. The property has beautiful foliage, such as palm and Coconut trees, Lime, Mango...basil,pepper,hibiscus, orchids and many other species of plants that I don't knowthe name of. (David Suzuki would be delighted). Sunshine every day,and the sound of the surf and singing of the birds were a perfect setting to a memorable vacation. Whether relaxing in a hammock or taking a swim in the pool or even walking a few steps to the beach, the choice is yours. There are many other things to do in the area, such as Zip Lining over numerous spectacular waterfalls, horseback riding, soaking in the warm waters near the volcano...feeding monkeys, which come up to you and take the food from your hand. The sunsets are breath taking. And let's not forget Macha, the house dog, that shared the quite moments of the morning with me and my cup of Costa Rican coffee.....A sincere thank you to Karin and Rupi.

We went to Oceano with a group of friends and had such an amazing time we're already planning to come back with our whole family! The rooms are clean & spacious with comfy beds, very effective A/C & private bathrooms. There are many great places to lounge or sit & chat outside and inside the house. The property is right on a lovely dark sand beach and your toughest decision is whether to cool off in the ocean or pool. We opted to have our meals cooked for us and they were delicious! We particularly enjoyed the ever present fruit plates with amazingly fresh fruit that were always on hand for snacks. There is plenty to do in the area, and many activities that can be easily arranged, but the house itself is also the perfect place to be if you're just looking to sit back and relax or hang out with your friends/family. I can't recommend Oceano enough - we thoroughly enjoyed our time there and are looking forward to going back!

The main house is cool and comfortable. A large modern kitchen with plenty of dining area provides the comforts of home. Two cabinas towards the ocean allow guests beautiful vistas, sunsets and sunrises every day. The property ends where the beach starts. Every day of our stay saw temperatures between 33 and 35 celsius with very few clouds. Live volcanoes and zip-lining through the treetops was only a couple of hours away. With only a couple of exceptions, highways were all very good. Mornings started early on the pool patio with the sunrise and a fresh coffee brewed with local beans. Extremely good coffee in Costa Rica. The caretakers, Bernie and Ronald, were always nearby and very helpful. This was probably the most enjoyable vacation I have taken in a long time and I look forward to returning in the near future. Thanks Karin and Rupi!!

When do I get to go back? The house and grounds are immaculately clean. The owners are friendly and caring about the guests. The care takers of the property are wonderful and do a great job. They cook well too if you want that included in your trip. We did most of our own cooking but they did a few dishes for us....thanks Bernie and Ronald mucho gracias!! The main house and cabinas have all been renovated. Fresh paint and several key upgrades such as a wonderful wood kitchen are all new. The main house is large and welcoming and all bedrooms have their own bath room. The cabinas are large and comfortable again each with their own bath. The views are breath taking and the grounds beautiful. The pool is very refreshing after a nice day in the sun or on a tour. The covered patio in the back is large and a nice refuge to have a drink out of the sun. Have a relaxing rest under the palms in a hammock..it's awesome. There is a house dog...Macha...nice dog...young and playful...great with everyone. I highly recommend the Soda 2 lots over towards the hospital.Good food...get the Natcho's! It was a wonderful 2 weeks in December and only 1 overcast day every other day was clear and 33 celcius. We never used the air conditioning as the ceiling fans and the wonderful breezes cooled us nicely during the day and at night. Can't wait to book again!

What an incredible destination for a family vacation. The property is spacious, secure, clean and well manicured which backs onto the Gulf of Nicoa providing a private beach setting. The main building includes a well appointed kitchen with all amenities of home and 6 bedrooms each with its own ensuite. The swimming pool separates another smaller more private building also with 2 additional bedrooms also each having a 3 piece bathroom. The town of Puntarenas is an adventurous 20 minute bus ride where you will find lots of souvenirs and trinkets. Stroll the boardwalk but don't leave without enjoying the famous "Churchill" dessert which could easily be a substitute meal in a cup. On the bus ride back to the property, make a quick stop to pick up fresh fruit and vegetables from any road side cart. And, remember to visit the popular local grocery store, Maxi Bodega to load up on refreshments (Imperial Beer & Cacique Rum). There are many other excursions which can be arranged through the friendly proprietors, Rupi & Karin. You will also find the property caretakers, Ronald and Bernie to be very helpful and courteous. Hope your visit is as memorable as ours. Pura Vida!

We recently stayed at Casa Oceano and found it to be a neat and tidy family environment. The owners are expats from Canada and speak both english and spanish. We enjoyed the scenic 90 minute drive from the San Jose airport. There is a hospital is a short walk along the beach and the village of Baranca is a short cab ride where you find a post office, grocery stores, restaurants, etc. If you want to get away for a short break with the comforts of home then try this place. Enjoy!
