Dalwhinnie Cottage, Killegray Ridge, Bald Head Island, North Carolina, is a bright, airy, whimsical, three story lantern oceanfront beach house facing South Beach with direct beach access by boardwalk to the ocean and reversed living area on the second floor which offers spectacular views of the ocean.
The ocean views from this cottage are incredible - on a clear day you can see forever. The cottage has over 50 windows and glass doors, offering views from every vantage point which are ever changing with the sun, clouds, rain, fog and wind. From the windows flanking the East side of the cottage is a view of the point of Cape Fear with the waves on East Beach falling on the Cape, and beyond onto the Frying Pan Shoals.
Directly in front of the house is South Beach w/the clear vista of the ocean with dolphins frolicking and pelicans diving for fish, waves lapping towards the front of the cottage and ships on the horizon entering Cape Fear River. Sunrise can be enjoyed on the east side of the cottage from all 4 bedrooms; sunsets from the oceanfront exposure of the cottage during fall, winter & spring months, as well as from the tall windows flanking the west side of the house, and most certainly, from the third floor west windows during summer months. Views do not end at sunset. We have no smog or city lights to hide the moon, stars, even the space station!
Environment: Dalwhinnie is the last cottage in Killegray Ridge oceanfront, immediately next to Braemar within sight of Cape Fear. A boardwalk extends directly from the oceanfront porch of Dalwhinnie to the beach access. There is a vacant oceanfront lot in Braemar next to Dalwhinnie on the east side of the cottage. The location affords privacy to its guests - living exposures focus on the ocean and the uncrowded beaches. The street entrance to the house is on a cul de sac off of South Beach Wynd.
The extensive boardwalk system in front of Dalwhinnie extends west thru Killegray Ridge into Flora’s Bluff - perfect for walking and play. There are miles of beaches, never crowded, waiting for you to step onto, directly in front of Dalwhinnie. South Beach begins at the Point of Cape Fear and ends at the west end of the island where the ocean meets the Cape Fear River.
Dalwhinnie is the perfect place for families with children or four couples, for families renting multiple houses for weddings or reunions or for a quiet get away for one couple. Each master suite -first floor king bedroom and crofter - offer privacy. A queen sized sleeper sofa is on the second floor with half-bath access. All four bedrooms have a private bath.
Floor plan: First Floor includes nine-foot ceilings with foyer; Master Bedroom with King size bed and private bathroom with direct access to the oceanfront rocking chair porch; a second bedroom with 2 double beds & private bathroom has direct access to the screened porch.
Second Floor has high vaulted, beamed, 14-foot ceilings and hosts the living-dining-kitchen area with an oceanfront deck facing south and oceanside deck facing east, and a half-bath.
Third Floor is the lantern room with vaulted ceiling includes two twin beds with a window surround facing east, south, and west; and bathroom facing north.
Crofter has 14-foot vaulted ceiling with view of South Beach from window over bed and from deck, and view of Cape Fear from glassed entry way, facing east.
Housekeeping and Maintenance: Dalwhinnie is owned and managed by its owners, and is cared for by the same housekeeper and houseman every week. Arrival and departure cleans & linens are included, as are beach towels. An island resident/handyman is available for maintenance issues when guests are in residence. Dalwhinnie has an HVAC contractor under contract to provide emergency service when needed. Monthly maintenance is performed on our golf carts. Pest control services are provided quarterly and as needed. Dalwhinnie has clear lexan hurricane shutters, and an island contractor who installs them when a hurricane is forecast.
Refurbishment: In 2006, major refurbishment! New windows, doors, refinished floors, new carpet, appliances, blinds, even hot water heaters and HVAC systems are new. 2005 and 2006, new mattresses. Painted inside and out - Dalwhinnie is glistening! In 2010 we replaced our roof, and refurbished our screened in porch.

This house is our favorite place for relaxation in the world! We have spent our last 3 spring school vacations here and hope to continue for many years to come. The home is incredibly well appointed and the location magnificent! Our 4 girls (ages 13 to 5) await each spring break with baited breath, as do we. I am confident that this property will exceed your expectations...enjoy! Rosemary Cape Elizabeth, MEDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

We are just back from a stay at Dalwhinnie and it was a wonderful experience. Everything was just as pictured in the listing. The views were everywhere with all the windows. There was 8 of us and we all had plenty of room. The many porches and rockers gave us a chance to be alone and read if we wished, but the great room was large enough for us all to gather as well. I highly recommend this property and the owner was very helpful in getting us information and responding to questions.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with young children.

With many porches, a fully supplied kitchen, quality mattresses, beach towels and chairs, children's sand toys, bicycles & helmets, this home has everything your family will need to enjoy their vacation at the shore. Have stayed at Dalwhinnie many times with my family and my girlfriends and always want to return again. The next time will be our 20th visit to Bald Head Island.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, families with young children.

We took our daughter and her family with us for a week in the Dalwhinnie Cottage, and what a terrific time was had by all. The home is gorgeous inside and out. The Rollins have decorated beautifully, the kitchen is totally equipped, linens and towels are lovely. We felt very much at home. The location couldn't be better, what can be better than waking up to the sunrise over the ocean. We came prepared with food for the week, so we could make our meals and enjoy them in the house. There were games aplenty, and we had lots of competition. If you like relaxing and reading, the chairs are so very comfortable. The outdoor furniture is great and there is somewhere to sit on every side of the home, porches galore. Having two golf carts really helps when you have more than 4 people in the house. We did not use the grill, but it is right there for you to take advantage of at any time. There were plenty of beach chairs and tons of beach towels. Having the outdoor shower was such a plus, also. We were very lucky with a gorgeous week with perfect weather, warm days and cool nights. We were all sad to leave, but looking forward to our next visit to Dalwhinnie. Thanks again to the Rollins for an unforgettable vacation.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We visited Dalwhinnie Cottage September 2010. It was an amazing vacation and such a nice beach house. It was well taken care of and was so well stocked (boogie boards, sand toys, beach chairs, towels etc). The owners were very efficient and easy to get in touch with from day one. Bald Head Island is my new favorite beach. It is such a natural, beautiful place. The wildlife is amazing. Loved it! Highly recommend it!!Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with young children.

Wonderful stay at Dalwhinnie! We highly recommend it to anyone looking for a house on the beach in an ideal location (near point but also 5 minutes from the market). The house is just as gorgeous as the photos show. We loved having the internet and access to house games and bikes. The most wonderful feature is the second floor big room that includes the kitchen - bar - and living area. The views out of the big windows and off the 2 decks are amazing. What a fabulous place to relax! Also, calling all cooks! The kitchen is stocked with an array of utensils and small appliances that will make the cooking experience much easier. The family cook also feels part of the gang due to the open room feel. The owner is delightful and made our lives much easier by providing instructions for our stay. We felt like she was looking out for us. It was nice. We highly recommend!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/3

I rented Dalwhinnie for a surprise getaway for my wife's 40th birthday. Three other couples joined us, and it was a GREAT trip. The cottage is all that it was advertised to be -- very inviting w/ great layout and views of the ocean, and easy beach access. The Shoals Club just down the road offered great amenities as well. The island is a wonderful place. The owners were a pleasure with which to work. We'll definitely be back.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/3

My wife and I were fortunate to have both sets of parents spend a week with us in the Dalwhinnie and it was fantastic. The house is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the beautiful beach. We couldn't have been happier! It truly feels like a home away from home.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 6/7
