About this property

A True Costa Rican Adventure: Large Pool, OceanView Sunsets Jungle Toucans

Set in the jungle, above the village and beautiful beach of Matapalo on the Pacific Coast, this house invites you to have a true Costa Rican experience! Even the 4X4 road to the house is fun! Just minutes from the beach, there is an amazing 180 degree view of the ocean. Enjoy the local sightings of toucans, parrots, soaring hawks, several kinds of monkeys, coatis, blue morpho butterflies and many other wildlife visitors from the patio deck, while still being close to lots of activities and unique adventures. Have an action-packed vacation or just lie in the hammock by the pool and read.

The house has an open, comfortable feeling with tile floors and beautiful wood ceilings and doors. The kitchen, dining room and living room all open to each other and the outdoors. Ceiling fans throughout the house keep the cooler mountain air moving. Downstairs there is a master bedroom (king bed) and connected bathroom, a single bed tucked under the stairway and another full bathroom. Upstairs there are 2 bedrooms (2Full, 1 twin) and sweeping views from Manuel Antonio to OSA.

As of May 2023 we are working on getting some updated photos of recent improvements like new fridge and carport and outdoor furniture. This is a family home, we are the original owners and we designed and built this house as a retirement home in 2003. Some pictures are older, some newer. The view never changes. Everything else just keeps getting upgraded.

Quiet and relaxing
This property was perfect for a quiet getaway. Very quiet but close enough to town and amenities that we could enjoy both the quiet countryside and run into town for food and adventures. The bird watching from the house was also exceptional, seeing toucans, parrots, and macaws.

A unique house and view
After our 4x4 got us up the long road to the house, we were amazed by the location in the forest with wildlife around and the extensive view from on high of the ocean. The interior living space was very spacious, and several doors open up to a large patio where we ate all our meals, and a wonderful swimming pool. It's also a good part of the coast to be on, because interesting destinations are equidistant to the north and to the South. Stayed 6 days, wish we could have stayed longer.

We woke up each morning and said "wow".
The view and location are outstanding. This property is especially suited for families/guests who like to be just a tad off the beaten path. Casa de Sunset provided us with the opportunity to have exactly the experienced we hoped for. The view was unbelievable, the pool was welcoming, the home was accommodating. While we had privacy, we also had easy access to local beaches and many restaurants. The first time up the driveway is exciting and guests should take the advice to have 4 wheel drive. Once you've made the first trip up, the drive is really no big deal at all. Just drive slowly and enjoy the scenery. Guests should also be prepared for the insects, especially in the evenings. That has everything to do with the climate and very little to do with the property itself. I would also strongly encourage visitors to seriously consider Becca's recommendations regarding outings and restaurants. The two closest beaches (within 5-10 minutes from the driveway entrance) are almost too good to be true. The Nuayaca Waterfall trip was the highlight adventure for our family. We took the horse ride option and would do it over again. We loved Casa de Sunset, Cloud 9. Pura Vida!

Wonderful !
The location/view/surroundings were even better than the pictures. Becca is a great host - very approachable and available when needed. The house is nicely appointed with all the amenities. We hope to be able to go back. A 4 x 4 vehicle really is advisable - the road up is very good condition but is quite steep in several sections.

Dreamy View
We stayed here for two weeks and shared the house with another family for one of those. The layout was great for two families! The view and pool are amazing. The trek up the hill is totally worth it! It’s a great central location to do many day outings like Manuel Antonio, Quepos (non touristy town) hacienda Baru, Tinamaste mountains and Uvita... We enjoyed the visiting toucans and parrots too. Did I mention the view?? Becca was very responsive to some minor house issues that I think are just inevitable during the rainy season, an older home and the climate. We didn’t mind the power outages, because the lightening storms are better than fireworks! I appreciated the extra amenities: a well stocked bookcase, beach chairs, boogie boards, games, pool floaties, coffee grinder...These things made our stay homey and comfortable. We loved it:)

We live and work in Walnut Creek, California, east of San Francisco. Two of our children and all of our grandchildren all live in the Bay Area. Our Daughter now lives on the property (in a separate house) and is the on-site property manager.

Why they chose this property

This get-a-way property allows us to enjoy an entirely different ecosystem and culture, as well as provides us a place to read and rest. We like the slow pace, but being near so many fun adventures.
