The perfect spot!

This was the perfect family holiday: we already loved the British Virgin Islands and it was great to be able to share it with our children ( ages 4,4 and 7). Elm Villa is clean, modern, and perfect for a family - although we would also come back with other couples. The views are breathtaking and once you get used to driving on the wrong side and the steep roads you will never want to leave! And make sure you try Mariel's curry. If you're looking for that perfect Caribbean hideaway that's a little off the beaten path then this is it.

I spent two weeks at Elm Villa this winter. The home was lovely. Very well kept and just as advertised. It is located in the hills above Cane Garden Bay and affords great views from the covered deck. I would certainly recommend this home.

Gorgeous setting in Tortola

Date of Stay: 03/13/10 Review Submitted: 03/26/10

Just spent a week at Elm Villa. Had a wonderful time. We have rented villas in the Caribbean 3 times and Elm Villa was by far the nicest spot we have stayed. What made Elm Villa so special was that unlike some Villas which appear to be equipped for renters with limited kitchen equipment, average furnishings and linens, Elm Villa truly was a home with a FULLY furnished kitchen, beautiful furnishings, impeccably maintained. In addition, the owners were very easy to deal with and very helpful The setting is gorgeous with 180 degree views from Cane Garden bay across to Josh Van Dyke down to Long Bay and the West End. The owners were spot on with their recommendations for meals, beaches etc. We had an excellent meal at the Dove in Road town and greatly enjoyed Smugglers Cove and Long Bay as beaches. Villa is best for a single family or two small families with younger children as Villa has one MB and three smaller bedrooms one with a queen, one with a bunk bed and twin and one very small bedroom with a twin. Villa also comes with a caretaker Mariel who does a wonderful job taking care of the villa and answering questions regarding the Island. In addition, Mariel stocks the kitchen with day one's breakfast and can cook when requested. We had Mariel make us a unbelievable chicken curry for our first night' s meal which was a wonderful way to start our vacation in Tortola after a very very long day of travel. One suggestion for visitors would be to take the ferry to the West End rather than Road Town. Having arrived in Road Town on a very large boat which involved very long waits both getting off the boat and going through customs both in Road Town and back in St. Thomas I think I would take my chances on the smaller boats coming in and out of the West End. I would also not bother getting a Ferry reservation as I think it boxed us in with respect to our options based on our travel timing and it does not seem to be a problem buying a ticket the day off.

Elm Villa - A Great Find

Guest: Jason981 (Annapolis, Maryland, USA)
Date of Stay: 07/16/09 Review Submitted: 10/08/09

My family and I rented Elm Villa for a week this summer and loved it. We give it top marks all around. In residence at the villa is a full time housekeeper, Mariel, who lives in a separate basement apartment. Mariel has a big impact to the overall experience. Her local knowledge and help make all the difference. We had hours of extra free time over the course of our stay because Mariel was looking after the household for us. As a result, you have more of a five star hotel experience than a rental experience. The Villa itself is beautiful. It is not your typical rental; over used and full of mismatched furniture. This is a vacation home of a wealthy family and it shows. It is tastefully decorated, and meticulously maintained. Perched on aptly named Windy Hill, high above Cane Garden Bay, the Villa offers spectacular views of both the Bay and Jost Van Dyke. The layout and furnishings give it the feel of a classic 19th century British Colonial outpost, perfectly attuned to its Caribbean location. The house opens up on one side to a large covered deck and dining patio, which are more covered outdoor extensions of the living and dining rooms. With the house opened up, the high location affords a wonderful breeze that blows through the rooms keeping all cool within a simply wonderful indoor/outdoor living space overlooking some of the most spectacular scenery and tropical foliage you will find anyplace on earth. The pool deck and grounds are lovely, professionally landscaped and once again of 5 star hotel quality. The decks are child safe, the pool area secure from the house and decks by a gate, and the entire outdoor area is walled off, so children can’t leave the Villa unattended. There are also loads children’s toys, books and videos available in the villa for use. There is even a child’s bedroom, with a low bed. If you have young children, this Villa is the one for you. If you don’t, this is a fantastic house for adults, just the same. Elm Villa gets our very highest recommendation. I can think of no negative comment or caveat from our experience there. We had a terrific time and the Villa far exceeded our expectations. We will definitely go back; which, at the end of the day, is the highest praise of all. Jason

Wedding Day Perfection

Guest: Scripty (Langley, B.C., Canada)
Date of Stay: 02/17/09 Review Submitted: 03/07/09

We have just returned from two weeks in the BVI, one week of which was spent on Tortola staying in this fabulous home. The pictures don't do it justice. It is large, airy, spotlessly clean, meticulously maintained, and so comfortable. The beds are all really comfy, all of the bedrooms have air conditioning, and there is plenty of closet space. The owners were very helpful ahead of our arrival, answering myriad questions from me and offering Mariel's help wherever we needed it. We were there for my daughters wedding and so were having a party the night before and Mariel helped keep coffee cups filled and the dishes clean. She even went into Road Town and picked up the desserts we had ordered from the bakery as she was concerned we wouldn't know where to find it or where to park. Mariel is the most wonderful gal and we just fell in love with her. She worked harder than we wanted her to, always trying to do our dishes and wouldn't let us take over. She made us spring rolls one night for an appetizer and they were delicious! She is a treasure and I wish I could have taken her home with me. The only negative I have is that the pool is not heated so it was very cold to swim in. I imagine that in the summer it would heat up nicely. I could have rented a place without a pool for quite a bit less but really wanted a place with one as I could picture us spending a lot of time in it. We tried to swim in it the day after the wedding as we just wanted a relaxing day to recover but even though it was a hot day, the pool was just too cold and we never used it again. However, it made a fabulous backdrop for photos of the bride and her bridesmaids before the wedding. I wish I could post one here so you could see. We used the bar-b-que almost every night and ate outside on the covered deck. The warm winds and chirping crickets, the pool lights and the candles gave each meal such a wonderful ambiance. I highly recommend this property to anyone wanting a private, comfortable, and relaxing place to vacation in.

New Year in the BVI

Guest: IFM (London)
Date of Stay: 12/29/08 Review Submitted: 01/17/09

We hav just come back from a fantastic 2 week holiday in the BVI and stayed at this villa for both weeks. The villa is really comfortable, it has wonderfully comfortable new pool side furniture including a very modern circular day bed with canopy for afternon snoozes. It has everything you would want including amazing views, beautiful pool and comy beds but it also has cable TV, aircon in the bedrooms plus Wifi which was perfect for the email addicts among us. The biggest luxury though was Mariel, the full time housekeeper who lives in the basement at the property. She not only cooked us amazing meals but looked after us doing the washing, clearing up, cleaning and gnerally keping the house pristine (clothes washing is extra but only 10-15 dollars per load). The villa is also right at the top of the island so we ad not problems with mozzies or bugs wich was bliss!! We will be coming back. (it also two lovely dogs Hugo and Chloe although if you don't like animals Mariel keeps them downstairs and away from the house).
