THE CRAFTSMAN BEACH HOUSE EXPERIENCE
Orcas Island is the “Gem of the San Juan Islands”! Play on the beach for hours or sit on the porch to enjoy the stunning saltwater and Mt. Baker views. Your home away from home is a 2200 square foot 1920’s Craftsman Bungalow. Fir floors and high ceilings downstairs, this large, comfortable residence boasts 6 PRIVATE SLEEPING ROOMS with two shared baths, making it a perfect vacation home for one, two or even three families! (See “Sleeping Arrangements” below.) On nearly 1 ACRE of grassy lawn, you can enjoy volleyball, football, Frisbee, soccer, bocce, horseshoes, badminton, laying in the sun and evenings around the fire pit. The beach is just 100 yards down the gently rolling lawn and across a quiet lane. EASY TO USE FAMILY FRIENDLY KAYAKS ARE AVAILABLE AT NO CHARGE!

THERE ARE NO HIGH CLIFFS OR DECKS MAKING THE HOME AND BEACH ACCESS SAFE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN AND OLDER ADULTS.

THE EXPERIENCE
Every day you will be greeted with a view of Puget Sound and the spectacular sight of Mount Baker standing tall in the sunrise. The view from the living room, dining room, and covered porch across the big lawn is a joy to wake to each morning. You can see Sucia and Matia Islands with Patos Island just to the north. Relax on the wicker furniture as you watch the sun rise, see eagles soar and deer graze. The orientation of the house and grounds are open, light and sunny all day and late into the afternoon. The sun won't glare in your eyes as you watch Mount Baker bathed in the glorious light of sunset.

THE BEACH
The beach is in Buckhorn Bay on Orcas Island. At all but the highest tide, you can explore the beach for miles. Our mooring buoy is right in the bay. The free recreational sit-inside kayaks are easy to store at the beach or throw in the back of a truck for transport to another bay for exploring. Many guests have said this home is 'better than waterfront' because the beach is so easily accessible. (Many waterfront homes in the San Juans are precariously perched on a rocky shore or on a high bank requiring a drive just to enjoy the beach! And if the home is on the beach, there is rarely a lawn and often the cost of rental is prohibitive.)

THE LOCATION
Orcas Island near the town of Eastsound
Orcas Island in Washington State is known as 'the gem of the San Juan Islands'. The home is 20 minutes from the ferry landing and 2.5 miles from the charming town of Eastsound. (Think coastal Maine). Everything you need is waiting for you (except stop lights, traffic, fast food and franchises). Enjoy the adorable shops, restaurants, farmers market and even a movie theatre. You can eat local! It is easy to find food entirely grown or raised on Orcas! Closer still to the house, there is a lovely park with tennis courts, a Skateboard Park (designed and built by Warren Miller himself) and a basketball court baseball fields and bocce court. Moran State Park, Washington’s fourth largest State Park, encompasses several gorgeous lakes for hiking, swimming and boating, are a 12-mintute drive where you can hike, swim, bike, paddle boat or kayak.

THE SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS
The Orcas Island Craftsman Beach House has a casual feel with comfortable and eclectic furnishings, making it easy to feel at home and relax. There are SIX separate sleeping rooms, with beds for up to 13 (5 queens, 3 singles) and a couch or queen futon or twin mattress on the floor of any bedroom makes 14. Four Queens are NEW Memory Foam, Temperpedic type mattresses. 1 Queen is firm mattress with memory foam topper. The layout: Upstairs, off a large central hallway, there are 4 private bedrooms including a 'sunroom' with two dormer windows and a view to the water and Mt. Baker. 3 rooms upstairs have queens (one also has a twin daybed), 1 room has two twins and there is a shared remodeled full bath. There is a spare futon under the queen in the large bedroom and one twin mattress under the dormer queen for extra persons. Downstairs one bedroom is adjacent to the 2nd full bath and has a new tempurpedic style queen bed. The other downstairs bed has a firm queen mattress with memory foam topper. The living room has a couch that does NOT fold out.

We decided to get away for a few days over Spring Break and this place was perfect! It was large enough for our three teenagers to spread out and have their own space! The large bedrooms had plenty of room for us to share the space with our baby as well! Even though it rained a few days there was plenty of games and movies to keep us occupied. The property was just as described and the front lawn was fabulous! We enjoyed walking on the beach and the beautiful views!!!!! The owners were very accommodating to our short notice and all of our needs were met! Overall just a great time!!!

My grown children, and grandchildren loved staying all together in this cozy, quaint, comfortable home. Even though the weather didn't cooperate (snow, rain and wind!) they managed to roast marshmallows at the fire pit, walk the beach, and play frizbee in the spacious yard. The house also had room for each of them to have their own space when wanted. The owners were beyond flexible and accommodating, and very responsive to questions.

Our party of 8 had a great time at the Craftsman Beach House. The house was well kept and came with everything as promised. Great selection of books for the adults and dvds for the kids. Nice beach with great views across the sound. The owners where a pleasure to work with and accommodating to our last minute booking and requests. Our only complaint would be that all the garbage cans were full when we got there (no big deal) and that we weren't able to stay longer :( Guess we will have to book ahead sooner. Can't wait to come back next summer.

Owner response: Thank you for your positive review! Timing of the garbage pick up relative to our guest's schedules is occasionally tricky on the islands. Especially in the summer. That is why we let everyone know they may place overflow garbage in our shed. Sorry if that info did not get to you somehow.

We just spent three nights in this house for my mother's birthday. The house was great--there are 5 separate sleeping areas/bedrooms and a large living space downstairs. It was actually more space than our group of 7 needed and the large bedroom upstairs was perfectly laid out for us along with our 3 year old. The water view was spectacular and we could see Mt. Baker for part of the stay. Our kiddo enjoyed the wildlife, including nightly visits from the deer and turkeys. One night it was warm enough to have a fire in the fire pit and roast marshmallows. We would love to stay here again.

Had a wonderful, relaxing time. Was a perfect house and location for my 2 year old - I found it challenging to find a safe vrbo (no high drop offs, balconies, lots of stairs) in the islands for my walking/running toddler who wanted to explore everything. This house and yard was wonderful! The fairly flat large yard gave her lots of space to run and explore while we relaxed. The beach was close by and easy to access. She loved all the rocks that she could throw into the water. Since my 2 year old was asleep, we couldn't go to watch the island fireworks - but we were able to watch the Bellingham fireworks from the comfort of the living room with our wine. My 2 year old still says "the blue house" whenever she sees pictures of deer because of all the deer she watched in the yard. Would definitely recommend to other families with toddlers and children of all ages. Works well with grandparents as well because of the first floor bedroom. We hope to return for a longer visit next summer.

Our large family group has rented from Kati for the last two years, and I strongly recommend this home/owner. For one, the view of Mt. Baker over the Sound is incredible. Couple that with a large yard where children and family can frolic free from auto traffic, a beautiful beach to amble along, a gorgeous Craftsman home and the city center a 5-min drive from the house, and you can't go wrong.

Went with six friends to go Mt. Biking at Moran. The house had plenty of room and was conducive to visiting in the living room, eating all together at the dining room table and playing games. It was very cozy and comfortable and had deer in the front yard eating apples every morning. The view of the water and the cascades was beautiful out the living, dining and master bedroom. Only downside was the water was much further away then what it appeared in the pictures. If you are looking for somewhere it all new this probably is not the place for you, but if you are lookiing for charm and character it is the perfect spot. The only other downside was the beds, not comfortable at all. The Owner, Katie was extremeley responsive and helpful and I have not had the same experience with other home owners.

Owner response: Thank you for the great review! (10/2012 We replaced the beds with Tempurpedic style Norvaforms in most rooms. Everyone raves!) You are the first person to say they weren't comfortable, so it must be time! I was surprised that you were surprised about the proximity of the home to the water. We reviewed our description and it is accurately described there. It says the water is 100 yards from the property and the home is on almost an acre. The numerous photos on the shutterfly site really help too. Again, I am glad you had such a good time connecting with friends and really appreciate your taking time to share your thoughts. Please come back and enjoy the new beds, and updated downstairs bath! Kati

We just spent five days on Orcas Island in this wonderful house. My husband and I concurred that this was our best vacation ever. Islanders were very friendly, weather was great for hiking and walking on the beach and the house was extremely comfortable. The vegetation on Orcas is lush and green. Mt. Constitution is a thrill! We spent a day on Lopez and a day on San Juan via the ferry. Everywhere you go the setting is picturesque. We will definately return to Orcas and hopefully to the Zingarelli's bungalow.

Described in other reviews as homey, we realized that it was perfect for our 3 generational family gathering because it was not "perfect." Everyone felt at home, with ample bedroom space, a large dining area, an exceedingly comfortable living room, and a beautiful view. Children explored the beach, siblings cooked large family meals, individuals hid out and read, and groups sat around and gabbed. It had everything that had been advertised, was well stocked with linens, towels, pots/pans and spices, and enough chairs and seating arrangements. The house is affordable and unpretentious. The beach can be difficult for fast walkers because it is rocky rather than sandy, but the children loved looking for fascinating rocks and sturdy shells. This was not a high-end beach house, and was therefore ideal for our particular group.

Owner response: Thank you for your review! We love the concept of a "Barefoot Home" and strive for that feel. We noticed the vacation rental options in the islands offered plenty of "high end" homes for folks with big wallets. We were very clear when we bought the place that we wanted it to remind people of simpler times; to be comfortable, not precious or pretentious, so that even people on a budget (like us!) could create wonderful family memories in a relaxed setting. We hope you join the many familes that return each year!

                      Owner info

About the owner: We live in north Puget Sound and have been married for 24 years. We have two children, one in and one just out of college. We spent every summer of their early years sailing the San Juan and Gulf Islands and have traveled with them all over the world, including a once in a lifetime two-week sailing trip in the Greek Islands. We all believe that Orcas Island is the most beautiful place on earth. Now we enjoy our 21' power boat, 34' sailboat and time together at the Craftsman Beach House. Sharing our home and sailboat with others is a great joy and helps make our dream of owning a home in the San Juans possible.

                      Why the Owner Chose Eastsound:
It's the JUST RIGHT place! Room enough for large groups but cozy and warm and sooo comfortable when it is just the two of us. We have good friends with a home on the water near our home. Every time we left we'd look at the (at the time) distressed Craftsman Beach House and say 'if that ever went on the market let's try to buy it.' Well, it did and we did! The location is ideal with the stunning view, and the bright open acre to play on and grow fruit trees. The property gets lots of light. Our favorite marine parks in the San Juans (Sucia and Matia) are just a 10 minute power boat ride away. With a stunning 'exploring' beach a short stroll down the lawn, the town just walking distance (ok, a 40 minute walk, but still) or a short bike ride-(10 minutes) away, and great friends nearby, this home had everything we dreamed.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Really, we never have to leave if we don't want to! The big lawn is great for frisbee and all manner of family yard games; the firepit for songs, stories and s'mores; the beach to explore for hours and build forts; the warm, casual and traditional house for gatherings large and small and an old porch to sit on with a glass of wine while Mt. Baker lights up the sky. We have to pinch ourselves sometimes.
