Location: Borgo a Mozzano, Lucca Province, Tuscany, Italy, Europe (30 minutes from Lucca; 60 minutes from Pisa.)
Accommodations: Villa, 4 Bedrooms + Detached Unit, 2 Baths (Sleeps 9-10)
Keywords: Tuscan villa
A large, seventeenth-century stone villa with a pool in the tranquil hills of the Garfagnana.
The house has fantastic uninterrupted views of vineyards, fields and the surrounding hills, with the pretty village of Cardoso perched on the opposite slopes, and beyond, the spectacular Apuan and Appenine mountains.
To one side of the house lies the small atmospheric village of San Romano, to the other, the gardens and open countryside.
Restored for modern comfort, the house retains its original features including old beams of chestnut wood from the surrounding forests and terracotta floors throughout. There are several gardens, including olive trees, and pear, apple, plum and fig trees which you are welcome to harvest in season. We also grow plentiful herbs for the kitchen.
The house has been divided horizontally into two substantial and completely self-contained properties, which share use of the pool, gardens and an atmospheric cellar, which houses a table tennis table. Each property sleeps up to eight people. In addition, there is a charming converted barn in the grounds, with its own facilities and private terrace, that sleeps a further two: this can only be rented with either part of the main house. For a large party both properties and the barn can be rented together (further details can be provided on request).
Each property has two private tiled terraces, one sunny, the other shaded by a terracotta roof for al fresco eating. There are many secluded corners, sunny and shaded, for sunbathing, reading and relaxing.
In each property the shady terrace gives onto a spacious living room, warm in winter and cool in summer, with two sofas, easy chairs and a large fireplace. There is a stereo which can take CDs or an ipod, and a small collection of CDs and books which you are welcome to use.
Both properties have a well-equipped kitchen and dining room/area opening onto a sunny terrace, and four bedrooms, all comfortably furnished with new beds, most with an antique chest of drawers or wardrobe. Each also has a modern tiled bathroom with tub and shower. The 'upstairs' property also has a second shower room with toilet; the 'downstairs' property has a second toilet/washroom. All the terraces and gardens and most of the bedrooms have beautiful views of the mountains.
Plentiful linen and towels are provided, as are a barbeque, washing machine, and central heating and log fires for the winter. We can also arrange domestic help during your stay if you wish.
We can recommend several lovely local restaurants including some fine dining towards Lucca. The nearby towns of Bagni di Lucca, Borgo and Fornaci have both supermarkets and specialist shops offering local cheeses, fruit and vegetables, as well as fresh bread and homemade pasta. The wine and olive oil of the hills around Lucca are superb. Fresh bread, cheese and vegetables are also sold in the village.
There are wonderful walks locally and in the nearby Apennines and high Apuan Alps (detailed walking maps are available in the house) and winter skiing an hour away at Abetone. The beautiful medieval hill town of Barga, with its summer jazz and opera festivals, and the hot springs spa of Bagni di Lucca, made famous by the romantic poets, are both only 20 minutes drive away.
The delightful walled town of Lucca, with its museums, squares, antique markets, restaurants and elegant shops, is only half an hour away. Pisa and the sandy beaches of Viareggio are an hour away. The art treasures of Florence and Siena are an easy day trip. You can spend the day shopping and sightseeing and return for a sunset dinner on the terrace.
Local activites include beaches, tennis, hiking and trekking, antiquing and tours of the vineyards and aristocratic villas of Lucca.
We can also offer access to a comfortable two-bedroom apartment in the historic centre of Lucca and advice on cars at attractive rates. We are happy to provide further details of the house and area as well as transport links on request.

Just a little word to say that we have truly enjoyed our stay at your place, which was definitely too short. We have enjoyed the house very much, and the fire place in the evening, playing Scrabble, our favorite holiday game!

I just wanted to say that we thoroughly enjoyed your house in Italy. It was such a wonderful relaxing week in a charming little village. Our children played with the children from the village - which was amazing to me - by the end of the week, the kids spoke more Italian than any of us! We travelled all over the region and are inspired by your home to search for property ourselves in Tuscany. Thank you so much for sharing your home with our families! I wanted you to know how much we enjoyed our stay at the house. It's a wonderful and comfortable place and we felt very at home there. Amelia and Bartolo were particularly kind to us and we enjoyed getting to know them a bit during our stay.
