Located just 23 miles west of West Yellowstone in Island Park, Idaho, Mountain Lake Cabin sits on a half acre property, nestled between pine trees and aspens, and bordered by Targhee National Forest. From the cabin you can see a glimpse of Henry's Lake, surrounded by towering mountains forming the Continental Divide. Mountain Lake Cabin, built in 2003, is the perfect home base for exploration of the Yellowstone and Teton National Parks. High speed internet is available through an ethernet connection via satellite. This cabin is supplied well - we provide linens and towels, a hair dryer, all paper goods, hand soaps, dishwashing soaps, laundry soap, shower gel, trash can liners, etc. The comfortability of our guests is important to us!

This 1508 sq. ft. two-story 3 bedroom/2 bath year-round vacation home has a large loft and sleeps 8 comfortably. It is fully equipped and tastefully furnished. The Great Room has floor to ceiling windows, and the log staircase and vertical logs supporting the cathedral ceiling add to the rustic charm of this lovely mountain home. The alluring view draws your eyes outward through quaking aspens and pines, and to the rising mountains that form the Continental Divide to the North.

It was here in 1805 that the Lewis and Clark expedition looked for a passage over the Divide to link the Missouri River to the Columbia River and down to the Pacific Ocean.

Knotty pine tongue and groove walls and ceilings, custom pine plank flooring, slate tiles, and plush wall-to-wall carpet create a cozy and rustic atmosphere in the cabin. Comfortable furnishings welcome you to a very relaxing experience! A fully equipped kitchen with breakfast bar and stools opens onto the Great Room with two comfortable leather couches, a recliner, a rocking chair and a corner cast iron gas stove backed by a tall wall of smooth river rock.

The master bedroom with its log bed and full bath is right down the hall. The master bathroom has a bath/shower combination. In the rear of the cabin is a large mudroom, that has a washer and a dryer and a door to the rear deck. The rear deck is very private and looks out over the adjoining Targhee National Forest that rises to the heights of Sawtelle Mountain. To the side of the cabin in the rear is a firepit, where you can gather to roast marshmallows, share the day's activities and reminisce...

Up the log stairs is a large loft, with a queen size pullout couch and an over-stuffed chair with ottoman. It is a cozy place to talk, read, or watch movies on DVD or satellite TV. There are two upstairs bedrooms; one with a queen bed, and the other with two twin beds. The upstairs bathroom has a shower. Up a log ladder tucked under apex of the cathedral ceiling is an eagle’s nest loft.

Out front the extensive redwood deck with its log railing looks out over aspens and pine trees, which creates a great sense of seclusion. Look forward to casual meals and BBQs here, as you enjoy the view and the sound of the quaking aspens.

Depending on the season, boating, white water rafting, water skiing, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, golfing, snowmobiling, sledding, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are all available in Island Park and neighboring West Yellowstone. You can literally snowmobile from the cabin onto trails that connect with groomed trails down the road in Henry’s Lake State Park, or into West Yellowstone and further into Idaho. You could also try the groomed trails at Big Springs (drive south on Highway 20 and take a left at Mack's Inn). There are also great opportunities for cross-country skiing - drive south on Highway 20 to Harriman State Park and enjoy the peace and quiet there. Or go to the world-famous RendezVous Ski trails in West Yellowstone and visit during the yearly Ski Festival around Thanksgiving, or take part in the yearly RendezVous Ski Races in March.

The fishing in Henry’s Lake and surrounding streams is a trout angler's dream and this area is a world-renowned fishery. The lake is home to the "Henry's Lake Lunker," a cutthroat-rainbow hybrid that can easily weigh up to 10 pounds. The lake also offers an abundance of brook, rainbow, and native cutthroat trout. The Henry's Fork of the Snake River flows out of the lake and winds its way through Harriman State Park to Ashton. This stretch of clear mountain water is acclaimed by fly-fishing enthusiasts as the "best trout fishing stream in the U.S."

Henry's Lake State Park on the southeast corner of the lake encompasses three unique ecosystems including the lake, wetlands and sagebrush steppe. Moose and antelope are a common sight and wildflowers bloom throughout the season. The 3-mile Aspen Loop Nature Trail is open to hikers and bikers.

High Mountain Adventures across from the Island Park Resort off of Highway 20 rents kayaks, canoes, rafts, tubes, 4-wheelers and mountain bikes. Or rent your snowmobile there during the winter. Spend a day on Henry's Lake in kayak or canoe as you enjoy the peace and quiet amidst the mountains of the Continental Divide.

Mountain Lake Cabin is within easy driving distance of Yellowstone Park, Red Rock National Wildlife Refuge, Mesa Falls Scenic Byway, Harriman State Park, Quake Lake, and the old mining town of Virginia City, Montana. If you're looking for a rich and authentic western experience in quiet and beautiful surroundings, with easy access to Yellowstone Park, you're sure to enjoy your stay at Mountain Lake Cabin!

October 13th - October 17th, 2007 First, we would like to graciously thank Magdalena, rental manager, for all of her excellent and timely communication with us as we prepared to travel here from Oregon! She was so patient and always ready to help with whatever questions we had which made our trip and our arrival here so wonderful! Thank you Magdalena! To the owners, Karl and Betsy: May I tell you that your beautiful cabin is so wonderfully well-equipped, stocked, and clean that I really did not even have to make a run to the grocery store for items like paper products, or plastic storage bags! Even a crock pot and every utensil/cooking item needed for those meals we cooked here - spices, even the condiments! Another excellent thing we enjoyed was how comfortable the beds and all the furnishings were. All of my family suffers terribly from dust mite allergies and so we are usually not very comfortable in rental homes because they do not clean well for dust in furnishings, bedding, etc. We had no such problems here, so we know you must do a great job of "allergy-proofing" your bedding and keeping dust to a minimum - we are so appreciative as this is very rare! I hope it can continue to be maintained this way because we hope to return annually! We spent a good majority of our time in Yellowstone so we did not see much wildlife around the cabin, but enjoyed the beautiful location! Your deck is awesome! Great work! I can tell you stay here yourself because your own special touches make all the difference! We have stayed in many vacation homes in Oregon on the coast and I can tell you from experience that yours has been the most comfortable and wonderful to stay in because of the care you have taken to provide more than 'just the basics' and your continued interest in 'keeping it fresh' and clean. Thank you for providing this wonderful home! Sincerely, The Laffertys and Dugans

Beautiful spot!

This was our second stay at Mountain Lake Cabin. We have enjoyed it as much as last year. Beside the major attractions at Yellowstone, we suggest Lamar Valley and the Midway Basin Geyser. We revisited Ennis, Montana and took the scenic drive to Mesa Falls. We are sad to leave this beautiful spot!

Even Nicer Than We Expected

Guest: Sonny P (Norfolk, VA)
Date of Stay: 09/10/11 Review Submitted: 09/20/11

The cabin was every bit as nice as we expected based on the reviews and pictures, perhaps even better than we expected. The cabin is beautiful inside and well equipped with anything you might need. The manager was easy to work with and very helpful. The cabin is well located for access to Yellowstone NP or Harriman State Park. I have traveled extensively, and this is the nicest cabin I have stayed in to date. If there was a negative about the cabin, it was the size of the bedrooms...a little too small for a dresser; but we managed with our clothing nonetheless. With all of the other great features, this is a minor detail.

Very nice cabin

Guest: J.C. (Pittsburgh, PA)

The cabin is very nice. Awesome country. We saw moose, a wolf, tons of bison, elk, mountain goats, coyote, pronghorn, osprey, and eagles in Yellowstone Park, and a mule deer in the yard of the cabin. The weather was great. We will be back.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful log home with our family. What a grand vacation we had to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary with our sons and daughter-in-law! We ventured into Yellowstone, Mesa Falls and the Grand Teton Parks. The horseback riding at Harriman State Park was the best! White water rafting on the Snake River and dinner was outstanding. This was the perfect home base for our amazing trip. Thank you!

Beautiful cabin was all and more than expected

Guest: Nancy with Family and Friends (Wisconsin)
Date of Stay: 07/30/11 Review Submitted: 08/10/11

July 30-August 6, 2011 ~ Thank you so much for letting us stay in your beautiful cabin! It was very clean, and made us feel at home. The kids absolutely loved the eagle's nest! Although we didn't see any wildlife outside the cabin, we saw two grizzlies, a bald eagle, and many buffalo and elk while we were in Yellowstone! We highly recommend Diamond P for horseback riding and Yellowstone Raft in Gardiner. The cabin was all and more than we expected! Thanks again for helping make our vacation so wonderful!

Beautiful setting in the middle of "Gods Country"

Guest: Fetzner family (Woodstock, IL)
Date of Stay: 07/23/11 Review Submitted: 08/03/11

We have really enjoyed being smack-dab in the middle of "Gods Country." After driving through Yellowstone, we were pleasantly surprised to find we would be staying in a setting almost as beautiful. We found the rodeo just down the road - a deal for $5. Took advantage of the bikes and took a nice ride to the main road - 14 miles of beautiful scenery! I highly recommend the short hike to Mystic Falls in the Biscuit Basin at Yellowstone. Also make sure to take a dip in the Firehole River! We had a marvelous time and appreciated the fact that the rental home was exactly what you portrayed it to be if not better! P.S. The Eagle's Nest was great. It was our game fort (from the kids) ~

Great family get-together in this joyous cabin

Guest: Lisa and Family (New Mexico)
Date of Stay: 07/11/11 Review Submitted: 07/18/11

7/11-7/18/11~ The De Temple-Smith family from New Mexico celebrated being together in this joyous cabin. Highlights included nightly cookouts, gorgeous wildflowers (which we collected in containers throughout the house) and riding bicycles all over the mountains! Whew, we are exhausted! :-) It was so wonderful to visit Yellowstone and return to this "home away from home." Actually we felt the Island Park area was just as spectacular as any national park. Thank you so much for the warm hospitality! P.S. The Eagles' nest was a big hit with the kids!

Gorgeous cabin - wonderful memories

Guest: Peggy, David and Family with Grandpa and Grandma (Seattle, WA and Hawaii)
Date of Stay: 07/06/11 Review Submitted: 07/13/11

We thoroughly enjoyed the week! Grandpa Chin caught fish in Henry's Lake and on a boat drifting the Henry's Fork of the Snake River. He had the most marvelous time and the cabin surely contributed to that experience. Grandma Chin loved the fireplace (don't see that often in Hawaii!). The Evans girls told stories and took naps in the Eagle's Nest and everyone marveled at the gorgeous cabin. We left left camping chairs for future guests. Bring them to the lake or the rodeo! Thanks again for such a great time and the wonderful memories. The Evans from Seattle and the Chins from Hawaii

Very well appointed and cared for cabin

Guest: Gary and Family (Virginia)
Date of Stay: 06/27/11 Review Submitted: 07/10/11

June 27-July 6, 2011 What an amazing mountain cabin. We loved using the firepit and grill and enjoyed the beautiful views on the drive here from Yellowstone! The house was so well stocked and comfortable. Thanks for all the small touches! It was a great week for animal watching ... we saw moose while on 4 wheelers in Island Park and in Yellowstone had close encounters with bison and their new calves plus elk, a black bear, coyote, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, squirrels and bald eagles. What an amazing week out here in Idaho and Wyoming and we are so glad we spent it at the Mountain Lake cabin! Thanks again for providing a very well-appointed and cared for cabin for our very memorable Yellowstone adventure. We very much appreciate all the work you two put into maintaining the cabin in such excellent condition and providing for all of your guests’ needs. Thanks so much! P.S. We also loved the warm weather, we were told we must have brought it from Virginia.
