N.C. Blue Ridge Mountains Log Cabin Vacation Rental - Wolf Den

Year Purchased: 2007

Why the Owner Chose Wilkesboro

We chose the Buck Mountain Community for our real log cabin because it is a 2,500 acre private gated community of log cabins and up-scale rustic exterior homes with spectacular views. There are 40 miles of scenic roads and many miles of ATV and walking trails at Buck Mountain. For all to enjoy there is the lovely Staghorn Waterfalls and a stocked fishing pond on site located within two miles of WOLF DEN Cabin. We wanted our cabin to be accessible but seemingly remote. With the exception of the final four miles to the cabin, the roads are Interstates or limited access four lane highways from almost anywhere. The ski resorts and the mountain area attractions including the famous Blue Ridge Parkway are within seven to thirty miles of our cabin. We try to go to the cabin as often as possible but, when we can’t be there, we enjoy vicariously through our guests the time they spend in our wonderfully pine scented and comfortable home.

A
Staghorn Falls

A delightful spring fed waterfall in the Buck Mountain community. Accessible via car or ATV. Take your camera.

B
Boone, NC

A great day trip from the cabin with plenty of shopping and dinig opportunities.

C
Wilkesboro, NC

Consider getting groceries and gas before you arrive at the cabin.

D
Fishing Pond

Stocked for catch and release fun near the cabin

E
W. Kerr Scott Lake

A wonderful huge lake less than ten miles from WOLF DEN Cabin available for all water activities and accessed via parks and boat ramps at many locations.

Owner's Map of Wilkesboro

We have been fortunate that one of our ventures allowed us to conduct business in upscale resort areas world-wide where we often stayed for weeks in exclusive hotels or in rented vacation homes, condos and villas. For most of our life together, we have lived near oceans in our homes on Kauai and Oahu, Hawaii, in Los Angeles and in Wilmington, NC. When we purchased WOLF DEN Cabin in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains as a second home, we added another dimension to our lives which allowed us to escape the tourists and the heat of the beach and the pressures of our business there and to envelope ourselves in the beauty, comfort and serenity that a real log cabin offers. We have taken all we learned over the years from renting other people’s homes and created a nearly perfect affordable vacation rental experience for our guests by providing comfortable beds and amenities in a setting that seems remote and off-the-beaten-path but actually is only a few miles from most Blue Ridge Mountains attractions and its breathtaking scenic beauty.

    • We had a wonderful time while staying at Wolf Den from 10/22-10/25,2009. The mountain scenery was absolutely beautiful! This cabin makes for a perfect vacation get away. We truly enjoyed riding our 4-wheelers on the trails of Buck Mountain. Wolf Den Cabin had everything we could have possibly needed. We had an opportunity to meet a few residents of Buck Mountain, who were very friendly and pleasant. We highly recommend staying at Wolf Den, and have plans to return.

      Homeowner Response:
When we are at the cabin, we like that we can stay downstairs in the master suite with the door closed and our guests upstairs can have their run of the cabin and its amenities. Come back anytime! Walter and Constance

    • We had a wonderful time at Wolf Den cabin. The cabin was warm and inviting, and the decor wonderfully appropriate for the setting. Clean and cozy, especially with the gas logs on. Great views of the mountains, and we loved the hammock outside looking over the mountain views. We went to several of the Swan Creek area wineries, only a short drive away, and had a fabulous time. A great place to visit, we are planning on returning for another getaway soon.

      Homeowner Response:
Thank you for taking such good care of our home! WOLF DEN Cabin is only a short hop away from hectic Greensboro but a world away in peacefulness. Yor are welcomed to return! Walter and Constance

    • We had a group of 6 people and we had a wonderful time. We all thought the cabin was very clean and incredibly well supplied with kitchen goodies...we cooked "in" two nights and really enjoyed ourselves. We would recommend the drive to Boone, Blowing Rock and Banner Elk, including the Banner Elk winery...one of the highways to Banner Elk was a twisty road and would be truly beautiful in the fall colors. We hope to return soon and often to Wolf Den!

      Homeowner Response:
Thank you! The cabin is convenient to local area wineries. North Carolina mountain wine is beginning to receive a wide and positive acceptance from connoisseurs. Several of our guests have enjoyed bringing a bottle (or two) back to the cabin and preparing a spaghetti dinner and smiling a lot, Come back anytime! Walter and Constance

    • Another great Merlefest and another great stay at Wolf Den! We tried to keep a list of birds mentioned in the music we heard, for our little birdwatching column we write for our local paper. The talley was, surprisingly, NONE this year -- However, I can report that up on the mountain, the birds were singing and showing off to us! Hooded warblers were singing all around us every morning and evening, although they frustrated us by never showing themselves. A ruby-throated hummingbird visited the back deck every morning, checking to see if the owners had hung a feeder yet. A wild turkey pranced through the front yard. Eastern Phoebes darted out from the branches of the trees, catching insects. Chickadees, titmice, and cardinals fussed and fumed around the cabin. Pileated woodpeckers, two or three of them, competed in a calling and drumming contest. We had a few red-bellied woodpeckers, too. And there was one bird who sang out in the front yard in the morning and from somewhere in the valley below in the evening, that I never saw, and I didn’t recognize the song. One evening a Cooper’s hawk alighted on a branch right about eye level to us as we sat in the rocking chairs on the back deck. We had plenty of time to admire him before he decided that the warblers weren’t going to offer themselves as an entrée, and moved on. And of course, the wonderful whippoorwills called each night after the sun went down. We did enjoy our stay! I'd forgotten how incredible the stars are, too. And we spent an extra day after the festival exploring the falls, napping in the hammock, and just enjoying the peace and quiet. Thanks for sharing your wonderful home with us.

      Homeowner Response:
Thank you for this lovely description of the birds you saw and heard at WOLF DEN Cabin. Sorry, there is no hummingbird feeder at the cabin - it also attracts ants. I am pleased you found time to relax in the hammock, too! I'd say staying an extra night to unwind after MerleFest wrapped was good for your soul. Thank you for taking such good care of our home. Walter and Constance

    • We have really enjoyed our mini vacation here at the cabin. We are here with our son, daughter-in-law, grandson, daughter & son-in-law. We just love the cabin and all of it's amenities. It is so comfortable and it is equipped to the hilt. We celebrated 2 birthdays while we were here and it will make for some great memories. There was some skiing at Sugar and hiking near Grandfather Mountain and lots and lots of relaxing and reading. It has been great!

      Homeowner Response:
Happy birthday! We are glad we could arrange for a late check-out for you and the family. It is our thrill when guests have such a good time at WOLF DEN Cabin. Walter and Constance

    • We recently stayed at Wolf Den for a long weekend to take advantage of Winterfest in Blowing Rock. We had a great time; we found a great little restaurant in Boone, The Bistro, on a family recommendation. We enjoyed the wine tasting and the concert in Blowing Rock, and of course Grandfather Mountain. The cabin was very comfortable, with plenty of indoor activities should the weather be less than perfect, cozy fireplace. A terrifically stocked kitchen which you rarely find in a rental house, it's usually the dregs of the tag sale; so cooking was a pleasure. Would love to go back in any weather. Thank you for a terrific mountain escape.

      Homeowner Response:
During the cold days of a winter vacation, the inviting and well equipped kitchen helps bring warmth to the tummy and to the soul. We love to get out and see the sites of the Blue Ridge Mountain area but we also surely do love to return to "home base" and cuddle up in our cabin sheltered from the chills of winter. Come back in the spring or fall for an entirely different experience. Walter and Constance
