Semur-en-Auxois house description
This charming and beautifully renovated property is located in the Lantilly, a small village perched on an escarpment providing exceptional views across the Brenne valley, and just a 5 minute drive from the medieval market town of Semur en Auxois with its shops, restaurants and patisseries.
It provides a relaxing and comfortable home-from-home, with the addition of a large private garden and a pool with exceptional views. This is a unique property which consists of two separate houses, either side of a private courtyard. You have the choice of renting both properties or just one. If you do rent only one house, the other will not be let while you are there. This will ensure that you have exclusive use of the garden and pool throughout your stay. If you wish to rent the second house, just let us know and we can provide a competitive price.
It is perfect for either family or friends or family. Both houses are comfortable, fully equipped, child-friendly homes with a veranda plus a large wooden terrace from which to relax and enjoy al-fresco wining and dining with beautiful views. La Petite Paillotte has the added attraction of a well-equipped children’s play room. The large private garden is entirely enclosed as is the family sized swimming pool.
The garden is truly a delight. Lovingly created by the owners, the peace and tranquility are evident. It is the ideal retreat where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings, assured that you also have everything to make your holiday that bit easier. There is very little passing traffic in the village but even so, the courtyard and gardens are private and enclosed, allowing children and dogs to play safely. That said, this is a perfect base from which to explore Burgundy or other nearby areas as transport links are so good. In addition, free Wi-Fi internet and excellent mobile phone reception enable you to stay in touch with the outside world.
The larger of the two houses, with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, La Paillotte is a lovely, elegant house which retains many of its original features whilst offering all modern facilities. This combination works to create a very comfortable home with a warm and welcoming ambiance, and is an excellent year-round getaway
On entering the house on the ground floor, you find yourself immediately in the large open plan kitchen/dining/sitting room. The natural stone floors and tall windows create an airy and cool space that is both practical and homely. The sitting area boasts an open fire and lots of comfy sofas.
The well equipped kitchen has all mod cons including hob, oven, microwave, and dishwasher. A washing machine & tumble dryer are also available in a separate laundry room, accessed from the courtyard. The dining room is spacious with a long traditional table seating 8, and from here you can step out onto the large elevated terrace from which you can enjoy the spectacular views.
There are 4 bedrooms in La Paillotte, 2 doubles and 2 singles. On the ground floor there is a large double bedroom with ensuite shower room and WC. Upstairs, there is a second large double bedroom looking out over the courtyard, with exposed beams and wooden floors. The two single bedrooms are upstairs and are accessed through their own door off the hallway. The first is cosy with exposed beams, whilst the second (which leads off the first) enjoys stunning views over the garden & valley beyond.
A cot is also available.
The second larger bathroom is upstairs and provides WC, modern shower, heated radiator and child seat. It also enjoys the view!
La Petite Paillotte
Situated across the courtyard, this detached 3 bedroomed ,1 bathroomed house is independent and fully equipped in its own right and can sleep 6 adults +2 (sofa bed) . However it shares the private courtyard, swimming pool and laundry room with its 'sister'.
La Petite Paillotte itself is a real gem, with a covered terrace leading onto the garden which provides a superb view over the valley and is a great place for relaxing on a sun lounger or enjoying ‘al fresco’ dining. This house has also been renovated to a high standard, featuring thick stones walls which keep the house cool in summer and a wood burning stove with central heating for the chillier seasons.
From the courtyard, you enter into the large open-plan living area with a Burgundian stone floor and wood burning stove. The fully equipped modern kitchen provides everything that you might need, including a dishwasher, microwave, coffee machine and oven with hob. The kitchen extends into the dining area, with seating for 6, and double French doors opening onto the covered veranda and the garden. Both the kitchen and dining area share the exceptional view over the garden and valley beyond. The living area is spacious and boasts a lovely wood burning stove, surrounded by a sofa and comfy chairs.
Upstairs there are 3 bedrooms, 2 doubles and a twin. The first double is a spacious sunny room overlooking the private courtyard with a large double bed and a cot. Bedroom 2 is a light and airy double bedroom also overlooking the private courtyard. The twin bedroom has 2 single beds on either side of the room, and enjoys a lovely view over the garden.
The large family bathroom is upstairs and is finished in a contemporary style, with a WC, bath and separate shower.
The play room is real feature of La Petite Paillotte. An ideal place for all the kids to play, this is a very large, sunny room running the full width of the house and offering a variety of games, and it also provides an extra sofa bed (for 2 adults). It is perfect if the weather is bad or you need a peaceful corner to escape to with a good book!
Lantilly is a small farming community with its own C18 chateau whose gardens are open during the summer. Within a short distance you can also visit:
• Flavigny sur Ozerain where the film Chocolat was made and you can stop to enjoy a coffee or a lovely lunch
• The magnificent Abbey de Fontenay (a UNESCO World Heritage site) which is also surrounded by woods for ramblers and dog walkers
• The Morvan National Park with its very interesting museum dedicated to the Resistance during World War 2
• Buffon’s historic C18 metal forge works
Close by is Alesia with its extensive remains of the earlier Gallo Roman city and a recently opened Eco Museum depicting Vercingetorix, leader of the Gauls and his last battle against Julius Caesar’s Roman army which took place on this site.
From Montbard, a 10 minute drive to the north, there is easy access to the TGV network of fast trains. The next station on the line towards Lille is Marne La Vallee, the station for Euro Disney which is about 45 minutes away. Paris is about 60 minutes. Equally easy(about 30 minutes by train) is Dijon, the vibrant capital city of Burgundy, with street side cafes, sophisticated shops, a large market as well as museums, art galleries and the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy to visit. The new tram system in Dijon is excellent as is the free tourist “hop on hop off” bus service that visits the key attractions.
From Venarey some 5 kms to the east of Lantilly you can hire bikes to explore the many cycle tracks in the area or hire a boat to cruise the Burgundy Canal, or, further afield, hire canoes in the Morvan National Park.
For wine lovers, Lantilly is located between Chablis to the north and Beaune to the south .You can taste(and buy) any of the famous names of Burgundy wines and visit the vineyards themselves .It is also ideally placed to explore the southern part of the Champagne region as there are 15 champagne houses within an hour’s drive. A new trail, the ‘route du cremant’, takes you through the charming wine villages of North Burgundy with the opportunity to taste many varieties of Cremant de Bourgogne - the champagne of Burgundy , often considered better and certainly half the price of Champagne!
Burgundy is also well noted for the warmth of its welcome and the extent of its hospitality. Not overrun with tourists, the region is relatively undiscovered, but Burgundy is proud of its culture and offers wine fairs, gastronomic events and local festivals throughout the year. The oldest horse race in France is “La Bague” which takes place in June on the streets of nearby Semur en Auxois, and this medieval town holds antiques markets and a small fresh produce market on Sunday mornings. Excellent restaurants abound!

Peace and beauty
Peace and beauty
We have visited twice. In 2011 our family came too so there were ten of us including four children. It was a great success with loads of space and a magnificent playroom. In 2013 there were just two of us soaking up the peace and relaxing. It worked equally well on both occasions. Both houses are excellently equipped, meticulously clean and maintained to a high standard – homes from home. There is also an enticing pool, attractive grounds and wonderful views down a rolling valley, all set in a charming village. Despite the tranquil setting and the feeling of time having stopped, the properties are close to good amenities, a plethora of places to visit and activities to pursue. And then there is the food! A splendid number of restaurants include, for a very special occasion, Le Relais Bernard Loiseau, a three star Michelin restaurant at Saulieu and the more modestly priced Michelin recommended Cheval Blanc, a few minutes away at Alise-Ste-Reine. We feel that La Paillotte and La Petite Pailotte offer a “complete package” - all one could want for a very successful and happy holiday and we would like to visit again. That says it all really!

Owner response: Thank you for taking the time to let us know how much you all enjoyed yourselves. It's always a pleasure when guests share their experiences, not just for us, but also for the benefits of those who have yet to visit and enjoy this very special part of the word. We hope to be able to welcome you back to Burgundy and La Paillotte in the future.
Lovely location and accommodation
Lovely location and accommodation
Excellent accommodation for a group or family holiday. The houses have lots of space and are kitted out well with fantastic views. There is plenty to do in the area if you're feeling active - great family friendly cycling by the canals, nearby towns, roman fort at Alesia but equally the house and pool are great for relaxing around too. Thoroughly recommend.

Owner response: Thank you for your review and for taking the time to share your experiences. We are so glad that as well as enjoying the house and pool, you were able to get out and about and enjoy some of what we have to offer here in the region. We love it when guests discover parts of the world that we have yet to find - especially restaurants! We hope to be able to welcome you back in the future.
Absolutely ideal for families
Absolutely ideal for families
Two lovely houses in a tranquil and peaceful part of France. We were three families (six kids under 8) and there was loads of room. The pool was wonderful - more than big enough for us all and the kids would have spent all day in it if they could. Plenty to do in the area, too (Beaune for wine tasting is about 50 mins away), and some tremendous restaurants in the surrounding towns and villages for the adults and/or families as well. Highly recommended.
