A 20 minute ferry-ride from Portland brings you 40 years back in time to 'Twin Oaks' which has been a family owned rustic island cottage for 60 years. It is located in Casco Bay facing Falmouth, Portland and MacWorth island. Enjoy the breathtaking sunsets over the water or watch the beautiful sailboats gliding by from our front porch.
Children always find activities from crabbing and fishing to swimming, jumping off the public docks or spending time at the sandy community beach which is 1/2 mile down the road (easy access by walking or golf cart). Cars are not necessary on this island, in fact they are considered a hindrance to a relaxing island vacation community. The island is best explored on foot, by bicycle or by golf carts (we provide one).
The property has black berries and raspberries in July, August and September. Feel free to pick fresh tomatoes, zuccini, snap peas etc. from our family vegetable garden cared for by Grandma Leddy. There are wild blueberries on the island in August. If you are really good you can find the best blueberry picking spots.
Families will enjoy playing sports or just running barefoot in the large grassy lawn overlooking the ocean.
Most of your grocery shopping should be done in Portland and groceries are easily shipped via Casco Bay lines to the islands public dock where you would transport them to the cottage with the golf cart.
There is a general store on the island where you will find beer, wine, staples and the best lobster roll around. There is an old fashioned penny-candy counter as well as an ice cream counter.
Great Diamond island has a five star restaurant called Diamond's Edge located on the island just a short walk away. Diamonds Edge offers fine dining, a full bar and also casual outdoor seating where you can blend in with the locals and visitors alike. There is a marina at Diamond Cove where boaters come to visit the restaurant. Daily and overnight dockage is available if you have boating friends who would like to visit with you during your stay.
Staying on Great Diamond island is relaxing whether you are reading, strolling or entertaining or you could be adventurous and take the ferry into Portland's Old Port for shopping, fabulous dining or theatre. |
