Superb Bed and Breakfast accommodation in the heart of the Normandy "Bocage"
Ideally Located for D-Day Beaches, Mont St Michel and Bayeux. "In House" Military Historian and Battlefield Tour Guide. Excellent Golf Courses within easy reach. Many good local restaurants.
Le Bocage is located at the base of the Cherbourg Peninsula, close to St Lo, Carentan, and the Atlantic Coast. It is easily accessible from the main road network, High Speed Rail from Paris, and from Cross Channel Ferries to Cherbourg and Caen Ouistreham.
The house is set in a commanding position within its own extensive grounds and was built in the early XIX Century in the style of a substantial "Maison de Maitre." All accommodation has been refurbished and updated (2006 and 2009), to a very high standard, whilst retaining the features and character of a house of the period.
ACCOMMODATION:
All the accommodation is spacious and stylishly furnished.
There are three bedrooms available for letting in the main house, one king, one twin and one single. Each has private shower, bath and WC.
There is a Sitting room/Conservatory and Dining room on the lower floor. Breakfast is extensive and includes fresh breads and croissants, Homemade jams and cereals, yoghurt, fruits, cheeses, eggs and cold cuts.
The 300 year old Stable block consists of one king bedroom and one standard double room, each with ensuite facilities. There is a large private sitting room with woodburning stove, two sofa-beds and a private garden with garden furniture.
Le Bocage is a family home. Your hosts, Major General Graham and Lesley Hollands have spent much of their lives in Europe and Africa with the British Army. Graham is a keen golfer and Military Historian. Lesley is devoted to developing her garden and her kitchen. Between them they speak French, German and English.
The Bear with his new friend!
VRBO Bear stayed here - 04/27/2004 This is the second B&B the Hollands have operated in Lower Normandy. Their other one, Le Manoir de Herouville was selected by Tatler Magazine's Abercrombie & Kent Travel Guide 2004 as one of the "101 Best Hotels on the way to..."
Even with the feeling of being centuries old, all the modern amenities are present in this beautifully restored home. The Hollands have lived many places during his lifetime military career and the home is full of remembrances of those places and career. Silver cannons and brass artillery shell casings look perfectly normal next to beautiful collections of antique cheese dishes and pottery from all over the world. Photos of their friend Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York adorn a table near a window overlooking the pastoral back yard.
The reason for our trip was to visit D-Day landmarks throughout Normandy, during the 60th anniversary year of Operation Overlord. The home provides an ideally located base for this. Graham is a retired British Army Major General and a student of military history. The two days of touring with him were exceptional. He is literally a walking encyclopedia on the history of D-Day. There is no other way we could have seen all the sites and gotten the background and insights he provided during the short time we were there. I can't recommend enough this service he offers.
The Hollands were wonderful hosts, always ready to make dinner reservations at their favorite local establishments or recommending the best of the many local activities. Between them they speak French, German and English. The home is located in an area where hiking and biking opportunities abound. If you love golf, Graham is keen to take you to any of the local courses, including one, strangely enough at Omaha Beach. If you are interested in the beauty of Normandy or the history of D-Day, La Moriniere is simply 'parfait ' (perfect).
