A special vacation home, Rainbow Cottage almost hangs over the rushing McKenzie River, which seems to run right under its decks. Two bedrooms and the living room have window walls on the river, and look across it to Castle Rock and more distant timbered mountains. At 800 square feet with a full kitchen and comfortable living room, it is small enough to be cozy for a couple, big enough to be home to a family or group of friends for a week or two.(The attached studio opens into the main cabin for larger groups.) Quiet, except for river sounds and an occasional car on the windy Old Highway behind it, Rainbow Cottage is a place for peace and rest from the world's work: no phone, no TV. (It does have a DVD television set and good wireless access.) Courteous management on site and maid service included.
Rainbow is one of a dozen cottages built along the river from 1920 to 1970 across the old stage road from an 1880s stage stop and hotel which still operates as a restaurant. The cottages were built one at a time and in different styles. Rainbow, all in natural wood inside and out, was designed in the 1960s by Vivian, a Las Vegas lady whose boyfriend gave her the whole place. Her good taste and sensitivity to the natural environment that surround it make it still a comfortable jewel that blends perfectly with its outdoor setting.
A special place, the upper McKenzie River is a mountain valley river in an old rural community much like a Swiss or French mountain stream town: rooted in outdoor work and natural beauty, pure air and changing seasons. The McKenzie has been a sought-after vacation spot for fisherman since the 1920s, when President Hoover stayed at these cottages, and is popular now with folks who love both its peace and its many outdoor activities in all seasons. But it still looks much as it did in the 1950s, when I grew up here, and in Hoover's time here: no big resorts, no housing developments, no crowds. It feels timeless in its community and its beauty and peace. Please feel invited to share it with us.
