Sheltered by the Olympic Mountains to the west and south, with a 180 degree panorama of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Vancouver Island, this expansive executive beachfront home on 1.8 fenced acres is the epitome of the good life Pacific Northwest style. Use the dingy to row out and set your own crabpots or walk to the boat launch to go clamming. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the "treehouse gazebo" on the main deck, and watch the shipping lanes. Careful beach watching will showcase everything from Trident submarines to newborn seals, surfers wiping out or the Coast Guard on patrol. Most afternoons in summer, several bald eagles circle the property, making their dinner selections!

The Great Room features views of the bay/strait through huge pictures windows, a large marble fireplace, five skylights, comfy, "user friendly" oversized furniture and an 1870's Bechstein concert grand piano, used by Washington-grown musician Jon Mutchler when he debuted his latest CD of jazz piano, named after our home, la place sur la Mer (the place by the sea, for those of you who took something other than French in high school). You can google him if you are interested in his wonderful music, find out where his next concert is or place a CD order. The dining area, part of the Great Room features a 10-foot beveled glass table with 12 Parson chairs. Adjoining, but part of the great room, is a chef's dream kitchen with a six-burner gas stove with custom hood, double ovens, wine refrigerator, granite countertops and large island, and, perhaps most important, a Capresso coffee machine for steamed coffee, latte' or capuccino, one rich cup at a time.

The Master Bedroom, or Suite Chocolat' is in a separate wing of the house for optimum privacy. It features northwestern and northeastern views of the strait (even from your bed), two leather chairs, 42-inch flat screen TV, DVD/VCR/CD and a fireplace. The bed is a King Temperpedic with dual controls. Blackout blinds behind the silk drapes might force you to sleep until noon. Sleep with the window (or door) open to hear the sounds of the surf. The ensuite bathroom has skylights, heated tile floors, double sinks, huge jetted tub-for-two, four-foot by six-foot shower with two showerheads and three additional jets. Step out of the bedroom and onto the deck or into the Finlandia sauna.

In the "west wing" are two additional bedrooms with a shared bath. The west wing suite is called the Scarlet Suite, which is comprised of The "Scarlet Bedroom" and "Le Jardin". The Scarlet Bedroom has autographed "Gone With the Wind" memorabilia on the walls and a dark red fauxed finish. It has an eastern king bed with stairsteps, private balcony with views of the lily beds and ocean. The other bedroom, Le Jardin, has antique hand-carved walnut furniture, comfy "full" mattress and features views of the grounds and Purple Playhouse by day and the sounds of the ocean at night. The bathroom has a soaking tub, heated towel racks and skylights. The west wing can be shut off from the Great Room for additional privacy and quiet. Both bedrooms in this suite have TV, DVD/VCR players, an additional microwave, small refrigerator and Tassimo coffee maker. JUST ADDED FOR SUMMER 2009: A third large master suite, the Bouvier Bedroom. Because of the signed Kennedy family memorabilia gracing the room we knew we needed a special name for this suite. In keeping with our French theme for our home, and names of other suites, we have elected to call it the Bouvier Bedroom, in honor of Mrs. Kennedy, whose picture and autograph grace the walls(in addition to photos and autographs from the two Kennedy children and President Kennedy, as well). The addition of this fourth suite will make it even easier for multiple families traveling together to each have private wings for separate, quiet time. This large suite has two queen size beds, its own bath and an additional, mostly unfurnished room with a desk and treadmill. It also has a small separately fenced area for keeping toddlers confined in a smaller space than the 1.8 acre outer fence.

We are aware that money is tight and although we have added two beds for four extra guests we have not raised our prices from last year.

In a daylight basement situated underneath the great room is the Mermaid's bedroom. It is in a separate wing and different level from the main house. The main house is available for $600/night, high season. The mermaid is an additional $150/night. If it is not required it will not be rented to an outside party. The suite features a periscope window,so instead of viewing the underside of the main deck with the aid of angles and mirrors one sees instead the deck, the water and Vancouver Island. It has a separate entrance and is only accessible through an outside entrance. It has a galley kitchen, private bath, fireplace, TV/DVD/VCR and a king bed made with locally harvested driftwood, embedded with rocks and shells.   • Gas/Electric BBQ Grill: "Monster Grill" (four feet wide, six burns and a gas ring) has been the cooksite for our son's wedding, serving 125 guests.
  • Deck/Patio: When we bought the property the 3600 square foot deck was larger than the house! The deck encompasses the entire north side of the house. Attached to the deck is a "step-up" heated gazebo for the ultimate in morning dining comfort. There is a fireplace AND a firepit on or attached to the deck.
  • Balcony: The Scarlet bedroom has its own private balcony and separate entrance. The Bouvier Bedroom also has private balcony and entrance.

  • Oceanfront: 150 feet of ocean frontage with no other houses in sight contributes to the sense of privacy. The high tide line is marked by large deposits of driftwood. A river rock and driftwood-outlined path constructed by your hostess makes beach access a cinch for most guests. A bridge has been added to the property making beach viewing easy and comfortable for wheelchair guests.

  • Pet Friendly: For the comfort of future guests certain bedrooms are off limits to pets. Because of previous bad experiences we cannot allow cats, no exceptions. In general we love doggies (and so do our doggies) but our insurance company is very grumpy about certain breeds and, of course, we must comply. Please do not bring your dog without checking with us first.
  • Handicapped Accessible (may have limitations): There is a wheelchair ramp built to access the main floor of the house. The Suite Chocolate bedroom or Le Jardin are the most wheelchair accessible beds on the property. The Scarlet bedroom's top mattress is about 40" off the ground. The Mermaid Bedroom is down a flight of stairs. The deck is wheelchair friendly. We have a bridge across the riverbed to access the beachhead. Actual water access is not possible.
  • Wheelchair Accessible (may have limitations): Deck and beach access for wheelchaired guests.
  • Kid Friendly: The property is furnished with comfy couches and the swim spa is a favorite with children. However, the corners of the marble fireplace and the 3/4" plate glass dining room table are unforgiving making the common areas something of a danger zone to toddlers and young children who tend to be fast AND wobbly. Please note that although there is a six foot fence around the property the swim spa on the main deck is not fenced separately.
  • Minimum Age Limit for Renters: Over 21.
  • Smoking Not Allowed: Please--if you smoke on the deck dispose of cigarettes into outside garbage. Dead "butts" stink as much as cigarette smoke and disposing of them inside the house defeats the purpose.
