What's an Earthship? This extraordinarily beautiful home was built with "rammed earth" tires spared from the landfill and other indigenous and recyclable materials, such as cans and bottles. It is completely off-grid and uses active and passive solar, as well as thermal mass, so that the temperature stays constant and comfortable without traditional heating and cooling systems. It also uses a catchwater system and reuses the water in grey and black water planters, so that not a drop is wasted.
The finishing touches and soft, fluid lines in this masterpiece home make you feel as if you are in giant sculpture, rather than a box. The micaceous clay walls sparkle and dance in sunlight as you bathe in and drink fresh (filtered) rainwater and breathe the plentiful oxygen produced from the "indoor jungle" greywater planter. Relax as you listen to the cascading fountain of the indoor fish pond. This natural and very alive dwelling will surely embrace you and rejuvenate your spirit.
This magical, 1,800 square foot home has high ceilings and an open, airy feel with only two separate rooms. The large bedroom has a sleeping loft with a queen mattress and ample closet space below, as well as, two convertible double-size futons. There is, also, a sleeping loft with a queen-size bed and couch over the main living and kitchen area. When you awake in the loft, you can view the sunrise from a wall of 12 foot windows into the desert.
A cozy, sunken kiva with a custom, highly efficient Rumford fireplace is the perfect place to warm up after a day on the slopes. There is also an outdoor fire pit with lots of seating. Star gazing takes on a whole new meaning under the vast, desert sky.
This home offers much privacy as it sits on a three plus acre lot and is surrounded only by other low-impact earth homes, community land and incredible views. Wildlife abounds. It is three miles from the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, ten minutes to the art galleries and restaurants in the fun and funky town of Taos and about 20 minutes to the ski area.
