Accommodations:  House, 4 Bedrooms + Bunk Area, 2.5 Baths (Sleeps 10)

Charlevoix Haven is a remodeled home in a quiet neighborhood of elegant older homes adjacent to downtown Charlevoix. Located one short block to downtown events, parks, restaurants, shopping, movies, and city marina, Charlevoix Haven is a pleasant walk from both Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix beaches.

Charlevoix's newest crown jewel, East Park, is a 2-3 minute walk away. With its completely renovated marina, performance venue, childrens' splash pad, and trout habitat and viewing platforms, East Park is the venue for Charlevoix's busy summer season of art fairs and festivals. Its elegant stonework reflects the local architecture of Earl Young's famous "mushroom houses," which are a short and pleasant walk from Charlevoix Haven.

Charlevoix Haven is the ideal location from which to sample the walkable delights of Charlevoix, recently ranked the #2 summer destination in the midwest by Midwest Living magazine. We provide extensive walking and biking tour suggestions, as well as recommendations on restaruants and activities (from fresh-off the boat Lake Michigan whitefish--one block away--to shops, galleries and fine dining accessible on foot or within a few minutes' drive, to a full day outing on historic Beaver Island--the ferry dock is a 5-minute walk).

Thoughtfully restored to add modern conveniences while preserving the flavor of old Charlevoix, Charlevoix Haven is furnished with a cozy mix of antiques, cottage, rustic and wicker for an at-home, up-North feel. Charlevoix Haven features 9-foot ceilings and oak woodwork throughout the main floor with an updated country kitchen and a floor plan that offers real privacy for up to 10 guests in 5 private rooms while inviting family fun and relaxation in the rest of the house.

The master bedroom suite on the main floor features a birds-eye maple queen bed and maple/mahogany waterfall dressers, and includes a private full bath with tub/shower. Three bedrooms upstairs feature Habitant knotty pine (king/twin beds), rustic cedar (queen bed) and antique oak (double bed) furnishings. The full bath upstairs, completed remodeled, includes a shower and double sinks. A fifth sleeping room is our "bunk room," off the kitchen; great for children and young teens, the bunk room has an attached 1/2 bath, two bunk beds, and a dresser.

No one in your party will get stuck in a typical vaction rental "bedroom" (you've seen them--an open alcove furnished with a "bed-frame-and-a-maybe-a-dresser")! All bedrooms are fully furnished with matching dressers, nightstands, bedlamps, clock radios, mirrors and cable TV/DVD (the bunk room does not have a TV). All these sleeping rooms are private, allowing full use of the rest of the house by late nighters or early risers.

See our website for more photos and descriptions (there is a link elsewhere in this listing).

Beaches on both Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix are a pleasant walk away; Ferry Beach on Lake Charlevoix is a great family beach with no busy streets to cross.

You may not need Charlevoix Haven’s central air conditioning, but if your vacation does hit one of Charlevoix’s occasional weeks of warm nights, our central air conditioning and the short walk to beaches will assure your family of having both sunny days and restful nights!

Restored 4-5 BR Home, Near Downtown, Beaches

Year Purchased: 2003

Why the Owner Chose Charlevoix

Once they moved to Michigan in 1980, going Up North took on a whole new meaning. In the mid-1990s Kathy and Rick investigated every possible summer destination in the Northern Lower Peninsula and eventually settled on an in-town location in Charlevoix as a base for active weekends involving incredible scenic beauty, sailing, beaches, fly fishing, great restaurants, art fairs and day trips. Their choice of Charlevoix was affirmed by Midwest Living Magazine in 2008, which named Charlevoix #2 out of the midwest's 100 top weekend destinations. (Kathy and Rick have been to the town they called #1, and they prefer Charlevoix--if you want to know which town was #1, give them a call, and they'll tell you why Charlevoix is better!)

The Unique Benefits at this House

Kathy and Rick have been in this neighborhood since 1996. Charlevoix is northern Michigan's premier walkable summer town, and it's all a 10 minute walk--or less--from Charlevoix Haven. They enjoy strolling in the recently redeveloped East Park, taking their grandchildren to the splash pad or new trout habitat two blocks away, watching the Beaver Island Ferry come and go (or taking the ferry to the Island for the day!) or strolling another 5 minutes to Michigan Beach. They've been in Charlevoix at least 20 weekends per year for 13 years, and still look forward to every weekend they can spend there.

Owner's Map of Charlevoix

Kathy and Rick Ballard grew up with "weekends at the lake" in their family DNA. In Indiana in the 1950s and 60s, going "Up North" meant going with their parents to a small lake near Warsaw, Indiana, where they met as children and played together on weekends. Kathy and Rick live in East Lansing, Michigan, and are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary in 2009.
