Coral Bay villa description
"If we were any closer to heaven, we'd be talking to St. Peter" said one guest about Great Turtle Villa.
Tucked into the lush mountainside above Coral Bay, behind an electronic gate, Great Turtle Villa is a casually elegant vacation villa with four bedrooms in two two-story pavilions bisected by a pool.
Rent 1, 2, 3 or all 4 bedrooms while enjoying access to the full house, decks and pool. Honeymoon couple? Rent 1 bedroom. Girls' getaway? Rent all 4 bedrooms. Rates vary depending on the number of bedrooms booked.
Great Turtle Villa is accessed via all paved roads, a rare amenity on St. John and very welcome in a tropical downpour. It is located in the comfortable, upscale neighborhood of Upper Carolina. Surrounding homes are on large lots hidden by lush foliage which provides lots of privacy. Enter Great Turtle Villa's drive through an electronic gate which not only adds extra privacy and security but it also keeps the wild donkeys out!
The front door opens onto the larger pavilion's main level which contains the attractive living and dining areas and the fully-equipped gourmet kitchen with a marble-topped work table and breakfast bar. In the living area, a flat-screen TV, stereo, DVD, plus music and video libraries, provide indoor entertainment. The fully-equipped kitchen boasts stainless appliances, granite counters and enough dishes, bakeware and pans to satisfy the most particular chef. Hand-polished mahogany screened french doors open onto spacious shaded decks with cushy rockers and inviting chaises perfect for enjoying the cool tradewinds. An outdoor walkway above the pool and courtyard garden leads to the other pavilion with its Yellow Bedroom suite. An open staircase heads down beside the garden, passing exquisite orchids and a stately coconut palm, as it leads to the pool level with three more bedrooms and a home office.
All four equal size bedrooms open onto large decks with dazzling views, have AC, adjoining baths and walk-in closets making Great Turtle Villa a perfect vacation rental for friends or families to share. No one gets stuck in the "back bedroom with no view". The pool, just steps from your bedroom, is perfect, from a morning dip to a midnight swim. The lush courtyard garden ensures total privacy for swimming or sunning on the deck. When children are present, to keep them safe, self-locking gates around the pool can be utilized. The home office is equipped with high-speed internet, WiFi, a printer, fax and copier. There is also a small refrigerator and coffee maker to keep poolside snacks and beverages or enjoy that morning cup of coffee on the deck.
Just minutes from fabulous National Park beaches and the funky bars and restaurants of Coral Bay, this villa's central location allows easy access to both sides of St. John. Cruz Bay is only a 20 minute drive away and all the best hiking trails are within easy reach.
Everything about Great Turtle invites you to relax. Spend the day in the cushy rockers on the deck or let your cares slip away as you lounge by the pool. The Caribbean-style decor offers a comfortable mix of inviting antiques and pleasant elegance. The villa's lush tropical gardens are filled with birds-of-paradise, scarlet bougainvillea and rainbow-colored hibiscus. Slice a papaya for breakfast or pick your own lime for cocktails. But it's the awe-inspiring view - sparkling white sails bobbing on turquoise water in Coral Bay, shimmering islands on the horizon, the ever-changing greens on the verdant hills of Bordeaux Mountain, the speckled browns of sugar mill ruins peeking through the foliage of Carolina Valley - that you will carry forever in the memory of your visit to St. John and Great Turtle Villa!
As one guest from Connecticut said, "I travel the world for my work and have seen many beautiful places, but, I must say, your home and the view of Coral Bay tops them all!"

- Great Turtle Villa is centrally located in the Upper Carolina area of Coral Bay on the 'backside' of St. John. This peaceful mountainside retreat basks in tropical breezes all day long and the paved roads make the climb easy. Coral Bay is considered the quiet, more funky side of St. John. It is close to the spectacular National Park Beaches - an easy 5 minutes from the house - as are some of the best hiking trails in the Park. Coral Bay is home to the famous Skinny Legs Bar, a must-see in the Caribbean. There are several other wonderful restaurants nearby. Cruz Bay, the main town, is just 20 minutes away. Other Activities: kayaking, hiking, shopping, beachcombing...moreless

We couldn't have been happier!
We couldn't have been happier!
No matter how much planning you do, or how many reviews you read, there is always a little trepidation pulling up to your rental home choice - will it be as beautiful as the pictures? as clean as they say? will everything work? FEAR NOT. This house was everything we had hoped for and more. First, it feels very secure there, even with only the screen doors closed, because of the driveway gate. Second, the living area is airy, clean and comfortable - all with that gorgeous view. The kitchen had all that we needed and more, including a blender, knives etc. Each of the bedrooms is so private that I never knew anyone else was awake until they either jumped in the pool or announced that the coffee was ready! We had hummingbirds at arms length from the porch and loved the comfy furniture out there. And the stars! Shut off the house lights and suddenly the stars looked like we could have touched them, too. The ride up to the house is not for the faint of heart - there will be no evening stroll around the neighborhood, but Nancy the property manager escorted us up from the dock and made sure we knew how to work/find everything. She also very kindly participated in a plot with my husband to have flowers there when we arrived - thanks! Sheets, towels, beach towels, porch and living room furniture, kitchen appliances - all of it is very good quality and in great shape. I loved that each of us had the choice of air conditioning or open windows and ceiling fans at night, so everyone could sleep in comfort. Personally, I so enjoyed the sound of tree frogs and wind that I have never slept better. We brought in a cooler with frozen foods (as checked luggage) and then supplemented that with shopping at Dolphin market in Cruz Bay and the minimart in Coral Bay - which does indeed come close to having everything! By fixing breakfast and packing lunches for our trips to the beautiful beaches, we kept the whole trip affordable without sacrificing anything. Not only would I stay here again, but if I won the lottery I would try my best to buy it out from under them!

What an amazing week we spent at Great Turtle. The house was ideal and the view was amazing. The pictures do not capture the spectacular view that Great Turtle has. We found ourselves wanting to spend the majority of our time back at the villa enjoying the deck space or lounging by the pool. There were two couples in our party and we loved the privacy of the bedrooms. We would have felt just as comfortable with more people and we felt bad that others weren't enjoying the villa with us. We went to view a few villas as we are looking to purchase on island. We kept comparing them to Great Turtle and none came close to the comfort, amenities and location of Great Turtle. You have a wonderful and private paradise on St. John. Thank you for letting us enjoy your home. We will be returning.

My wife and kids and I truly enjoyed this house, and its location on St. John. The view of Coral Bay from the house is wonderful, and never gets old. The pool was a big plus, especially for the kids. Lots of outdoor space and seating, to make that gorgeous view part of the house. Also, parking at the house was not difficult, like some other houses in the area. The bedrooms were very comfortable, and the screen doors to the living area of the house were great because they let in light and breeze while keeping out bugs. The kitchen was well-stocked and spacious. The location of this house is well-situated, closer to Coral Bay, but a short and easy (though hilly, like the entire island) drive to Cruz Bay. We loved the Donkey Diner (for breakfast) in Coral Bay, as well as Skinny Legs, Island Blues and Shipwreck Landing (for dinner). Nearby beaches that we loved were Cinnamon Bay, Trunk Bay and Maho Bay. We would whole-heartedly recommend this property to family and friends, and we are looking forward to going back soon.

Amazing view, perfect setup!
Amazing view, perfect setup!
My husband and I stayed here with his parents and some extended family while on St. John for a wedding. I don't think we could have found a more perfect villa! The property was gorgeous, including the decorating and the landscaping! I was delighted to find several varieties of orchids growing near the pool. The listing was accurate, the photos shown are also very accurate, and we were delighted with the furnishings. We had an issue with the iron early on (we were there for a wedding and needed pressed clothing!) and we contacted the property managers. Nancy showed up within a half hour with a brand new iron for us! The villa was also perfect for cooking-we regularly cooked for groups of 8 to 10 and the kitchen easily accommodated everyone! We loved everything about the island; we snorkeled daily (sometimes twice), visited Colombo's Smoothie shack any time we passed, and used the pool every morning and evening. I noticed a previous commenter said the pool was "cold" and in the shade. I did not find this to be so! I rose every morning between 5:45 and 7:00 and the pool was always comfortable at this time, as well as during the day and at night. We made full use of it up to the day we departed! Just a note for anyone considering staying here-make sure you are comfortable (or someone in your party is comfortable) with the driving! It is very fun if you like to drive! Also, I recommend shopping at Starfish Market in Cruz Bay for groceries. The prices there will not make you choke. Miss Vie's Snack Shack on the east end of the island is a must-go! Try the iced tea, but don't ask for the recipe! Colombo's smoothies on 10 is also fabulous, and you can have free light rum in any smoothie! I highly recommend the Funky Monkey! All in all, my husband and I are all set and ready to move to St. John-it gets in your blood really fast. Thank you Great Turtle for the wonderful experience! There is nothing more wonderful than waking up, having a coffee in the hammock and then jumping in the pool, surrounded by the lush greenery and abundant flora. (and occasional braying donkey!)

Heaven in Coral Bay
Heaven in Coral Bay
This is a wonderful house. You would have to search very hard to find anything wrong with it. The house is located in a very quiet spot but short ride to Coral Bay or beaches. The views are to die for with views of Coral Bay and BVI's. It is so tastefully decorated. Kitchen has absolutely every utensil in it that you could want to cook a wonderful dinner. We dined on the porch almost every night. The set up of the bedrooms is perfect. Everyone has their own private space with their own bathroom. We had two requests for the property manager, Nancy and within hours of requests everything was taken care of. She really made herself accessible. The grounds are well maintained and the pool was spotless. People really enjoyed staying home and just limin out at the house. We have rented many, many houses in St. John over the last 25 years and this house is the best!!!

This house was perfect for us in every way. The space was ideal for the three couples for interactive time and alone time (actually, two more people would have been fine, but there were only six of us). The spectacular view wowed us...I mean, we saw the pictures, but until you're there, you don't really believe it! Every one of us loved the colors, the beautiful screen doors... these are just details, but every single nuance helped to create a feeling of abundance and luxury...and yet, not pretentious. Very nicely done! While there was barely a reason to leave, we did venture out a bit. Did a little shopping at Mongoose Junction and some of the other Cruz Bay shops. We also enjoyed the local Coral Bay offerings, including some live music at Island Blues and cocktail hours with delicious appetizers at Aqua Blue. We loved breakfast at The Donkey Diner. Four of our party had a blast with Captain Bob and Matey on the Spree 2...and rather than snorkeling, as most passengers do, our four decided to drop in on the two of us who were enjoying a day at Hawk's Nest beach...so we all swam together for a while...fun! Every morning was a time of exploration for my husband and one of the other guys. And from sunrise to moonlight, we all were refreshed by time in the pool. Vacations are funny...it matters who you travel with, how the weather cooperates, can you find things to do / eat / enjoy in your chosen destination...but ultimately, it really matters if you have a home base that welcomes, nurtures, and serves you well. Great Turtle Villa did this for us superbly! And kudos to Kathy, the owner for being so accessible and helpful as we planned this trip.

We just returned from our stay (Feb 21-28, 2009) at Great Turtle Villa. The house was perfect! It was well maintained, very functional and the view was fantastic. We explored much of the island of St. John and were always happy to return to the villa in the evening to relax, swim in the pool and take in the view. WOW!

This place is a slice of heaven! We loved the layout of the house and its gardens. It is so well maintained compared to the other St. John rentals we've stayed at. The best part about this neighborhood is that it's so close to the best beaches and Coral Bay, and also just a short drive into town. The location is great, but we ended up staying in many nights because the views from the deck beat any restaurant on the Island!

Why the Owner Chose Coral Bay:
We had sailed in the Virgin Islands for 15 years with our 4 children and came to love St. John. When our children started having children of their own, we decided it was time to get land based and built a home that would be comfortable for all of us. Now we have 10 grandchildren who all come to visit us in St. John and have learned to love it here as much as we do.
