As you drive down the private association road toward our Three Island View house, you'll see why you'll enjoy your stay. The view of the New Meadows River (an "embayment" or large cove of Casco Bay) opens before you. Once inside, the chalet-style house’s open feel directs you to these extensive water views, and you’ll enjoy the wrap-around large deck with hot tub and both gas and charcoal grills. The spectacular sunrises from the house will invite you to be an early riser (though they're best in late fall).
Set on two private acres with a large yard and over 300 feet of owned water frontage, the house looks out to a tidal basin replete with bird life - and clams to be dug for dinner (permit needed). Herons, osprey, and even a pair of pileated woodpeckers are visitors to the yard. At the end of the road, maybe 500 feet away, is the Association dock from which you can launch a canoe or kayak to explore the coves of the area. Lobster boats lie in constant view. Three miles to the south is the quaint, working fishing village of Cundys Harbor with its lobster pounds, small eateries, and open ocean. See link below for a web page with extensive photos.
You may never want to leave the yard, but your rental purchase includes a pair of complimentary tickets to the Portland Sea Dogs, the Red Sox Double A affiliate. (These are our pair of season tickets. We can likely offer you tickets to more than one game as well as tickets that can be exchanged for general admission tickets to go with the season tickets.)
While very private, convenience is a key feature of the house. You’re just six miles (ten minutes) to Cooks Corner in Brunswick, which has all the shopping you could want. Five minutes south on Route 1 brings you to Brunswick with some unique shops, truly fine, yet casual, restaurants -- and the museums and sites to explore at Bowdoin College should a rainy day befall your stay. Musuems include the Perry-MacMillan Artic Museum, a splendid, newly renovated art museum, and the General Joshua Chamberlain Museum. Maine Summer Theatre is on campus. Freeport (think: LL Bean) is another ten minutes south and Portland is an easy 45 minutes from the house. Portland is a wonderful, small city with much to offer.
Harpswell itself is a great town to explore. Bowdoin has an ocean study center on Orr's Island with easy trails to the water. Over the unique crib stone bridge lies Bailey Island, which also has town beaches. Five minutes north of Cooks Corner on Route 1 brings you to Bath, a maritime center with shops, museums, and restaurants. Down East Maine extends before you along Route 1. Reid and Popham Beach State Parks are nearby, both fun to explore with good beaches. Beyond Bath lie Boothbay Harbor, Damariscotta, and all of mid-coast Maine -- easy day trips.
Our house is a wonderful place for a quiet vacation retreat. It is in a small association of year-round homes, not with other vacation houses. If you want to party all night with fellow vacationers, please keep looking. (We're not asking you to be stoic vacationers, but we want people appropriate to the setting.)
Note that our house is pet friendly; we bring one of our cats there. If you have severe pet allergies, this may not be the house for you; weekly cleanings may not remove all pet hair.
While you may use the Association dock (at your own risk), the rental does not include "docking priviliges," that is, you can't dock a motor boat there. Canoe, kayak, and boat rentals are available very close by.
