Built during Washington DC’s infancy, this charming two-floor townhouse offers visitors exceptionally comfortable and convenient accommodations for short or long term stays in our Nation’s Capitol. The townhouse is located on Independence Ave and 7th Street SE, less than three blocks to the Eastern Market metro, and about a 10-15 minute walk to the Library of Congress, US Capitol, Supreme Court and the National Mall. Eastern Market, Washington’s oldest continually operating fresh food market, is just steps away, almost across the street.
The townhouse can accommodate up to 6 guests comfortably with two bedrooms located on the second floor, requiring a THREE night MINIMUM stay. The main bedroom is furnished with a tall four-poster queen-sized bed and overlooks Independence Avenue. Large windows allow for plenty of natural light in this bedroom. The second bedroom has a twin-sized daybed, which converts easily to a king sized bed. There is a newly renovated bath on the second floor with a large marble shower with glass doors.
The first floor includes a living room with double sized sleeper sofa, gas fireplace, and flat screen television with cable. The adjoining kitchen includes European appliances and granite counter tops. There is no formal dining room, but a bar made of solid tiger maple separates the kitchen and living room. The kitchen includes refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, stove and oven combination. There is a combination washer/dryer unit for small laundry.
In warmer months, the townhouse includes a private patio, in the rear, just off the kitchen with a large dining table allowing for outdoor dining. One of the few properties on Capitol Hill that can provide parking, this is also accessed from the rear of the house.

Four of us (2 adults, 2 young children) stayed in the 1860's Townhouse during a recent family visit and work trip to Washington, DC. We loved having more elbow room than a hotel room and getting a glimpse of the Capitol Hill community. The location is excellent. What an interesting, and walkable neighborhood! Being two blocks from the Metro was very convenient for accessing the rest of the city for work and sightseeing. My conference was at the Washington Convention Center. Even on the weekend when the Metro runs less frequently, my door-to-door commute was never more than 30 minutes. We had easy access to grocery stores, coffee shops, restaurants, and cute shops. The house is immaculate and well-appointed for visitors (plenty of towels, blankets, soap, shampoo, laundry detergent, garbage bags, etc.) We used the upstairs beds, both of which were quite comfortable. My kids enjoyed the daybed, which filled half the bedroom and provided a very cozy sleeping space. I can see where some adults might not like having to crawl in to the far side if they were sharing the bed, but for us it worked great. The owners take great pride in the property and the neighborhood and were very responsive to our calls (nothing major - just questions about how to work the fireplace and where to find the Pack 'n Play sheet). They have decorated with old maps of the neighborhood, and we enjoyed the books about the history of the city. We also appreciated that the owners were worried that we'd be cold when the temperatures dipped. We weren't cold, but it was nice to know where the extra space heaters were, just in case. We would stay here again in a heartbeat on future trips to Washington, DC.

We had a wonderful stay at the 1860s House. There were five of us, including two children and the accomodations were great with the pull-out sofa in living room. Loved the easy access to Metro, the Eastern Market - literally across the street, washer/dryer in unit, larger master with TV, and beautiful historic neighborhood. Lots of great restaraunts nearby. We were within easy walking distance to Library of Congress and Capitol. Felt safe. Great owner, so friendly and provided good suggestions for restaraunts, grocery stores in neighborhood and nice overview of the home's history. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!!

My sister, mother and I stayed here in Sept of 2010 and had a great time. The location is ideal for walking, dining, taking the metro and having a little retreat at the end of the day in a quiet neighborhood. The house was clean, tidy and had everything we needed for our five day visit. There were a few things around the house that could use a little work, but nothing that really stood out. There are a few markets nearby to purchase foods and beverages for breakfast and snacking, yet I would recommend trying the many restaurants in the neighborhood such as the Belga Cafe and the Pizza place located nextdoor to the Eastern Market. I felt very safe the whole time I was in DC and at this residence. I would rent again and stay longer.

We needed a place to stay that gave us easy access to the Supreme Court, and we really couldn't have found a better location than this townhouse. It was a very leisurely five minute walk to the court (and the Library of Congress/Folger Library). Also, the neighborhood was fantastic--quiet and cute but very close to restaurants and the Eastern Market. The kitchen was also well stocked and we enjoyed the convenience of making breakfast during our trip. Our only complaint would have to be that both beds were pretty uncomfortable--and when the twin is pulled out into a king, there is an awful draft blowing on your head all night long from the window. The pullout part of the bed slopes downward due to a broken board, so the only option is to sleep with your head in a cold draft all night long. The bed in the master bedroom is very hard and quite high off the ground. But we were all so exhausted from long days of sightseeing, that I don't think anyone lost too much sleep from the hard, uncomfortable beds.
Owner response:Thank you for choosing to stay at our Townhouse. Happy you found the neighborhood welcoming, safe and vibrant. We were unaware of the broken slat in the bed, and have fixed it. We are looking into the draft issue, and while we have not had any other comments on the comfort of the beds, however we will start specifically asking each guest and take appropriate steps.

This townhouse is located in a very "up and coming" area that is vibrant. We were able to walk around at night with no problems, seeing lots of others out walking. The house itself was very clean and one bedroom was very large. The second bedroom is quite narrow, but fine for one person. The listing photos accurately reflect the apartment's appearance. The only thing that needs improvement is the outside appearance. It could use a paint job and a yard weeding and clean up.

If you coming to spend time in DC, this is the perfect spot to be! Updated and new renovated, this place is cozy with a warm environment for family and friends. Besides the beautiful décor, it is in walking distance to the market, restaurants, bars and tourist attractions. Not to mention, the Metro is right down the street. Exploring the city made it comfortable and easy just by staying in this location.

The place was immaculate upon arrival. The decor of the house suited our vision of the area very well. After unpacking, we realized that the central location of the town home exceeded our expectations! Located in the heart of DC, accessibility to transportation, entertainment and historical venues was just within reach.

We just returned from our week long stay in DC. The 1860s Townhouse was everything we hoped for: close to the sights, great neighborhood with many restaurants within walking distance. We were very pleased and would recommend this place to anyone!
