This is a wonderful, very private vacation retreat, ideal for a family, a couple or for a group. It is 15 minutes from the award-winning pristine beach at Bahia Honda State Park (our main reason for picking this area.) 2 easy-to-use kayaks are included in the rental. In 5 minutes you can be kayaking in a large bay full of exotic birds and marine life. Manatees appear in the canal behind the house. Key deer wander through the property, which is wooded with palms and other tropical vegetation.
The open floor plan with high-ceiling cypress beams and ceiling fans keeps things airy and cool, even without air-conditioning in the cooler months, when it's over 80 during the day and about 60 at night. Great for a good night's sleep. Beds: one king, one queen, two singles and a convertible sofa if you need it.
Big Pine itself has just the right amount of civilization for us:
a supermarket, a health food store, a video store, a terrific weekend flea market and a few more Mom-and-Pops. And Key West is only 30 minutes away. Some great restaurants, featuring fresh seafood, are only minutes away. And the famous pizza at No Name Pub is across the street. For those who like to catch their own fish, the canal behind the house can accommodate your boat or you can engage a charter. The snorkeling at nearby Looe Key is superb.
