Stonewall cottage is located on Big Portage Lake in Backus, Minnesota, 10 miles north of Pine River and 30 minutes south of the Leech Lake/Walker area. There are numerous attractions nearby which include 100 miles of the paved Paul Bunyan Trail, for biking, hiking, or rollerblading.
The North side of Big Portage Lake is bordered by the Deep Portage Nature Reserve with miles of trails for hiking or ATV riding. If you are here to ATV, access the logging trails at the end of our road. If you’re here for the great fishing, there is a nice public boat launch nearby to access the chain of 3 well stocked fishing lakes. The area has much to offer nearby including: golf courses, Northern Lights Casino (a 30 minute drive North in Walker), restaurants, antique and gift shops, grocery and liquor stores.
Our fully furnished one(1) bedroom cottage has a full bed in the bedroom and 2 additional futon couches in the common spaces to allow sleeping for six(6). The bedroom also has a twin bunk bed for the kids. Build a fire in the lakeside fire pit, or in the stone fireplace inside, and enjoy the comfort Stonewall Cottage has to offer.

if you like to sit on the back deck overlooking the lake, looking at birds, listening to loons, and taking naps this quaint and artfully decorated cabin is lovely. Its a bit old fashioned (clawfoot tub shower) and water tastes like well water (I dont mind at all). We cooked lots of dinners and enjoyed the peace. We fished at several of the lakes nearby and swam nearby too. We took a nice canoe paddle from the dock next door and saw eagles, snapping turtles, osprey. Its does not feel like a mansion, its a lovely quaint cabin and even though other cabins are physically not far away it feels quite isolated as it is on top of a hill with lots of vegetation around.
Recommended for:Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, age 55+, girls getaway.
