Casa Guadalupe is a tranquil hideaway in the central historic district of Merida. From Casa Guadalupe, stroll a few blocks down calle 47 to the beginning of the beautiful Paseo Montejo. Every Saturday night, enjoy the music, food, and artisans at the "Noche Mexicana." Two more blocks brings you to the lovely Santa Ana square, with its market (fresh tortillas, produce, flowers, spices), outdoor food court (try the tacos and a fruit smoothie), and, of course, music! On your way home, stop for a refreshing beverage served with some of Merida's best "botanas" (free appetizers).

The Merida English Library sponsors many activities in addition to lending books: Monday evening conversation groups to brush up on your Spanish, Wednesday morning house tours, monthly social gathering, and AA meetings. Once you fall in love with Merida, you'll want to return again and again!

The décor at Casa Guadalupe is mainly Mexican, but not too rustic. (The plumbing is definitely "gringo"!) If you're like us, you'll spend most of your waking hours in the spacious private courtyard - featuring a dipping pool that is perfectly situated to escape the hot afternoon sun. There are two bedrooms - one is in the back, the other in the front, off the living room.

Each has a queen-size bed, and there is a queen-size futon in the living room, and a hammock that can be hung in any room or on the patio. Both bedrooms have wide doors that open onto the courtyard, as well as remote-controlled AC.

There are two bathrooms - one inside the house, and a half bath and outdoor shower are conveniently located in the courtyard (just off the rear bedroom).

The newly renovated gourmet kitchen (we love to cook!) is equipped with the best stainless steel appliances. The counters and backsplash are Mexican native Ticul stone and Talavera tile. Dine al fresco in the enclosed courtyard just outside the kitchen. A stairway leads to the upper terrace - perfect for catching an evening breeze!

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2004

I have lived most of my adult life in Maine, USA. Now I live and work in the Boston area, but we still head to Maine every chance we get. We love spending time at our island cottage (VRBO listing #118778). Of course, children and two grandchildren are a big draw! In the winters, I am lucky to be able to tele-commute from Casa Guadalupe in Merida (VRBO listing #118785) for a month or two. Since we can't be in both places at once, it's gratifying that we can share our special homes with others!

Why the Owner Chose Merida

Over thirty years ago, my husband and I chose Merida as one of three places in Mexico to go on our honeymoon. Twenty-five years later, a friend who wanted to retire in Merida got me interested in buying a retirement home in Merida - even though my plans to retire were still 10 years in the future. There are so many things I love about Merida that I hardly know where to begin. I posted a lot of my favorite travel information for guests at MeridaInternational [dot] com. You can probably guess from the photos what I like most about Casa Guadalupe.

The Unique Benefits of this House

Outdoor living is one of the best features of Casa Guadalupe (especially since I lived so many years in Maine!), and the private courtyard makes it easy to relax outdoors. I even enjoy just watching how the shadows of the tree cross the wall by the pool.

I also enjoy being in the Centro area so we don't need a car. We can easily walk to several squares and the the main plaza, and to the many cultural events in the downtown. To head out of the downtown, taxis are nearby, cheap and plentiful.

Dear Allison, I had a wonderful stay in your home. It nurtured my "weary winter soul." Casa G has beauty and tranquility - a perfect combo. Until next time! Nos vemos, Maria
