A large group of my girlfriends from college met in Newport and luckily, we had rented the Captain Simeon Potter house through VRBO. We LOVED the house! It really made our trip. The house is extremely large - there are three floors, and behind every door is another unexpected bedroom, closet, bathroom, or staircase. There is even a small second kitchen on the third floor! Every room has its own air conditioning (just make sure the windows are closed tightly). The bathrooms are all newly renovated and spotlessly clean, and the decor is ecclectic and well-suited to this nearly 300 year-old house. The kitchen is nicely appointed with a big island in the middle (benches on one side) and new appliances. There is a large dining table in the adjacent dining room, and more seating space than you could need in the living room. The bedrooms are large and there are so many bathrooms!! Very important when lots of women get together. It was an absolutely lovely stay. We spent most of our time there in the back yard, using the nice gas grill, and drinking wine on the picnic table under the umbrella. The park across the street is lovely, too, and there's a cool breeze off the water into the house. We took some beautiful photos at sunset - the sunlight shines right across the water and into the windows of the house. There is parking for at least three cars in the driveway and for two more cars on the street (with the parking passes provided with the house), so having visitors is easy. There is also a large municipal parking lot across the street and the parking attendants help you figure out how to cheaply park there. If you've been to Newport, you know parking can be a problem! The floors in the house are newly refinished wide wooden plank floors - and there is an excellent stereo system that you can hear throughout the house. You can walk to everything in the downtown area - everything Newport has to offer is so close by! The house is a short drive from Gooseberry and Second beaches, too. The owner is lovely. She was incredibly helpful and easy to work with - she answered all of my questions and made the rental process very simple (which was unexpected, considering I was coordinating plans for more than a dozen women). We we all highly recommend the house to others - with no reservations. This is not a Newport party house on Ann Street... it is a lovely, historic waterfront home that we all hope to return to as soon as possible!Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, age 55+, sightseeing, tourists without a car.
