Hakalau house description

This beautiful vacation home was completed February 15, 2007. It was designed with the Hawaiian plantation architecture in mind. It has beautiful bamboo flooring in
the kitchen, great room and master bedroom. There is a wet bar in the great room. It has ceramic tile in all three bathrooms and carpet in the two other bedrooms.

All three bedrooms have exterior doors that open to the wrap around deck or lanai, offering privacy and easy access for all guests. The spacious lanai has a panoramic view of the ocean view and a dining table for six. The wrap around deck gives you plenty of outdoor living space. The house has a cupola with sloped ceilings for superior ventilation and a very open feeling. The furniture and décor is new with a lovely island theme. Library of books, TV in living room, I POD dock on wetbar. Two blenders and plenty of wine/beer glasses ready for you.

The kitchen has everything you need for preparing meals including spices. Coffee maker, coffee grinder and electric tea kettle. Two sets of dishes, fully stocked with pots, pans and baking dishes. Enjoy the beautiful cabinetry and granite slab countertops. There is a washer and dryer for your use along with beach towels, ice chest and two sets of snorkels.

It's been about two weeks since our short stay on the Big Island, and my family still fondly reminisces about the trip, to include our time at this vacation home. I highly recommend staying here. The flow and size was perfect for our family of four. It's an open concept house that was very clean and comfortable. We couldn't have asked for more. The location was great too. Just an easy ten minute drive from downtown Hilo. The homeowners were friendly, responsive to emails, and easy to do business with. I'm so glad we were able to stay at this property, and I'm sure we’ll be back again.

We spent a week at this lovely property. It is only minutes from Hilo but when we arrived we felt that we were in old Hawaii. This home has a plantation feel. It is open and airy with an awesome view of the Pacific. We enjoyed sitting outside on the Lanai and listening to the rain. We took day trips to the lava fields in the south, north to amazing beach overlooks, west to the resort areas and even into the interior to visit a vanilla plantation. There are many places to snorkel. We enjoyed the many species of fish and got quite close to some large turtles. Make sure you stop at the Pacific Tsunami Museum in Hilo. For amazing fresh fruits make sure you visit the farmers market in Hilo. We found many nice restaurants, reasonable priced with good wine lists. We recommend this beautiful home to anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing place to connect with traditional Hawaiian culture and to "recharge your batteries!"

This is the best place I've ever stayed. It's just right outside of Hilo. It's private, beautiful, really functional layout. This is my second time staying there and I hate to leave every time I stay. I love to cook and its a great place for cooking and visiting at the same time. It's just a walk to the hakalau cove. So its like having your own private beach. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Can't wait to go back!

A beautiful home in a beautiful area of the big island. We were visiting from Oahu and we found this location perfect; close enough to all activities yet quiet and peaceful. Everything you need is there, from cooking to beach-going. And I can't say enough about how very clean and well maintained it is. Much better then any hotel! And Starr was great. Thanks.... we hope to come and stay again.

This rental home met our needs very well. We were able to enjoy everything from staying in and relaxing on the beautiful lanai, to day trips to the other parts of the big island. The kitchen and outdoor grill had everything necessary to prepare gourmet meals, Open the windows at night and enjoy restful sleep on the comfortable beds. If you wake up in the middle of the night, go outside and take a look at the stars - it's amazing! At the walkable beach at Hakalau and the drivable beaches at Kolekole and Honoli'i we enjoyed everything from collecting sea glass to swimming and surfing. We also couldn't resist jumping off the bridge over the creek that feeds the ocean at Hakalau Bay, which is a 5 minute walk from the house. The owners make the renting experience very easy - I felt like I was working with a friend who had invited me to stay at his vacation home. The local caretaker is also helpful in getting the property ready for your stay. The grill ran out of propane, and one call to her and we had the tank refilled in time for dinner that night. We stayed 8 days and would recommend the property for someone who wanted an easy way to experience all the Big Island has to offer, and a cozy home to return to after a day of fun.

Three couples spent 4 nights in this comfortable home. The wrap around lanai with separate entrys to each of the three bedrooms was ideal for our situation. We found the home very clean, with plenty of living and kitchen space. (The patio area of the lanai is large and we spend time outside enjoying meals, the rain, and games). This home is well furnished and had all the amenities needed. It's location is quiet and private, yet only a 20-25 minute drive to Hilo and just 10-15 minutes to Akaka Falls and other scenic vistas. It was truly a great 4 days. We hope to return in a couple of years and spend a full week. Thanks Rick, for making our stay in your home easy, comfortable, and very enjoyable.

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this well kept property. The property is even nicer than the photos make it look. The kitchen was fully stocked--right down to the spices and we enjoyed cooking here and on the grill located on the lanai. Beautifully furnished and many personal touches that made us feel right at home. My children ages 6 to 16 especially enjoyed the board and card games provided. The beautiful lanai was so comfortable and inviting for meals, visits or just gazing at the gorgeous ocean view. Rick has been excellent to work with and his directions to the property and list of activities were spot on. Volcanoes National Park, Waipio Valley, Hilo's farmer's market, Hapuna Beach, and Akaka Falls were just a few of our favorite places, some minutes away and all within an hour's drive from this property. We loved all the big island had to offer and this property made our stay even better. Thank you!!

We stayed here in the summer of 2011 for a week and loved the house. It was very quiet -- at night you could only hear the sound of the Koki frogs. The afternoon that we arrived, my 12 year old, my 9 year old, and I walked down to the beach. It was a wonderful walk, beautiful and lush, but not really a swimming beach. There were 5 of us and the house was a great size and the area is safe. The kitchen is great and we mostly cooked our own meals. It was a great location for our visit to volcano activities, local black sand beaches, and very close to the botanic garden.

The house was beautiful and everything we expected and more. It was in a quiet area overlooking the ocean from the porch. We had evening rains that made a wonderful sound on the tin roof. We were seranaded by the frogs nightly. The house cooled off quite nicely in the evening with the breeze and rain. The kitchen had everything we needed to enjoy the comforts of home. The owners even provided a three page list of things to do in Hilo and restaurants that we might enjoy.

About the owner: Rick and Faith live in San Diego County. Rick is a landscape contractor who studied ornamental horticulture in college. Faith is a nurse. They have always enjoyed traveling. Their favorite destinations are Hawaii and Lake Tahoe. They hope to eventualy retire in their home on the Hamakua Coast, where they love the laid back lifestyle, natural beauty and tropical weather.

                          Why the Owner Chose Hakalau:
We love the Hakalau Historical Neighborhood. The walks to the bay and park below the house.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
We enjoy so many things about the Hamakua Coast: the warm tropical climate, swimming in Hakalau River or Kolokole beach park, surfing at Waipio or Honolii beaches, snorkeling at the Richardson beach or Kapoho tidepools, browsing the Hilo Farmers Market for delicious fruits, vegetables and sometimes other goodies like fresh fish. We love the 'Old Hawaii' feel of the area, where the locals are so friendly, courteous and helpful. This area truly exemplifies the Aloha spirit.
