Truely a Home Away from Home

Guest: Nancy (PA)
Date of Stay: 12/07/11 Review Submitted: 02/02/12

It was a pleasure for my husband and me to stay at Cassiopea for 8 weeks this fall. Truely Anna Rita and Piero anticipated our every need and beyond. Bologna is a beautiful midievil city; not a tourist destination and one feels like you are living in Italy, not just visiting, Cassiopea is located in a charming neighborhood, walking distance from the inner city, but also an easy bus ride to the inner city or train station. Shopping at the market for fresh vegtables, meats and pasta is fun and Anna Rita's kitchen is a delight to cook in. Many delicious restaurants are closeby should you choose not to cook. The apartment is immaculately clean, comfortable, and decorated with Anna Rita's artwork. It truely feels like a home and not a rental. Our two adult sons joined us for our last two weeks and the apartment was comfortable for four of us as well. Bologna is centrally located and we enjoyed easy day trips by train to Florence, Venice, Parma and Ravenna. Always nice to have Cassiopea as a base to come home to after a day of travel. Cassiopea is also within walking distance of one of Bologna's most beautiful walks, the Portico di San Luca. The longest continuous arcade in the world, 666 arches lead to the beautiful Santuario della Madonna di San Luca a top a hill with views of all of Bologna. We enjoyed this walk often. We hope to return to Bologna and would very much like to return to Cassiopea. We would highly recommend this property to anyone. Anna Rita's ricotta cake is not to be missed! Thank you very much Anna Rita and Piero for making our time in Italy so special.

Thank you Annarita and Piero for your warm welcome. We really enjoyed our short but fun filled time in Bologna. The apartment was clean, well located, with a lovely little balcony. Our hosts were very helpful upon arrival with all kinds of tips and information. Also thank you for arranging our ride and our pick up at the train station. That truely makes it easier for out of the country travellers. We are sorry to have been there on a Sunday as lots of shops etc. were closed. Remember to pack lite when travelling as the stairs up to the apt. are a real work out! We hope to be able to come back again.

A great alternative to a hotel

Date of Stay: 09/17/11 Review Submitted: 09/30/11

We considered Cassiopea to be our home in Italy. It is a spacious, clean and well equipped apartment in a friendly and well-serviced neighborhood just outside Bologna's old town. Anna Rita and Piero were very helpful - they picked us up at the train station, provided many helpful hints on things to see and do in Bologna and left us with one of Anna Rita's delicious cakes. Much more than we ever expected. The only negative is the three flight climb to the apartment, but it proved to be excellent exercise and a good way to burn off some of those extra calories from the delicious Bolognese cuisine.

Great rental in a great neighborhood

Date of Stay: 05/30/11 Review Submitted: 06/05/11

We initially were trying to rent a property inside the downtown historic area but after beingbherevfor a week we are thrilled with our selection. We have been only a 10 minute walk to the core which is delightful, but the biggest bonus for us is the neighborhood. With great spots for groceries, at least 3 salumerias, half a dozen bakeries, several spots for fresh pasta, half a dozen bars, and a good selection of restaurants this area has it all. We could easily walk to the hike up the porticos, into the hills south of town for a countryside hike and a quick bus ride to the train station this has to be one of our favorite properties to rent ever on VRBO. Thanks to Anna Rita and Piero for the wonderful pickup at the train station and filling us in on all the details of the flat in their walk around, this property had everything we needed and it all worked perfectly. The ricotta cake was the welcoming gift that made us know we had chosen well. Enjoy Bologna, the best food in Italy by far without all the crazy crowds of Venice and Florence and the locals are delightful and happy to help with language barriers.

Cassiopea

All of those great reviews are right on. Great place. It's about a 20 minute walk to Piazza Maggiore, or an easy bus ride takes you right to the corner, about 50 ft from the apartment. Well equipped, and with three separate rooms, it's pretty big for a European apartment. As two adults, we were very comfortable, and a small child or two would do well also, but it would be tight with four adults. Be aware that it is a fourth floor walk-up without an elevator, if you think that might be an issue. Piero and Anna Rita were easy to do business with, and you can tell this is a privately owned apartment, and not run through a management company. Their knowledge of the English language helped immensely.

Perfetto accommodations

Date of Stay: 03/28/11 Review Submitted: 04/26/11

Cassiopea provided a wonderful home base for our recent trip to Bologna. It is located just outside the viale (boulevards) that encircle the old city, and is steps from one of the main bus lines. Yet it is also within walking distance of the arcade that leads to the Santuario di San Luca, a beautiful basilica church on one of the hills south of Bologna. The apartment is located within walking distance of 2 supermarkets and a natural foods market. Each was well-stocked, and provided the essentials for our stay. I would suggest, however, that you venture out to the Mercato delle Erbe for some fresh fruit and vegetables (and herbs, of course). The apartment was perfect for the two of us, and would likely accommodate 4 comfortably. It was clean, and we had no problems with it (save for a tape player that seems to run constantly). It has a tub, but no shower. This did not pose any problems for us. And having a washing machine made an extended stay easy to manage. The owners, Annarita and Piero, were very helpful, picking us up from the airport, and readily offering answers to our questions by e-mail (or by telephone). And what is otherwise written about Annarita's torta is true! It's a good thing you'll have a few steps to climb to allow you to enjoy it guilt-free. One suggestion on nearby restaurants: try to visit these restaurants: Meloncello, Scacco Matto, and Al Sangiovese. You will not be disappointed. The notes of other visitors to Cassiopea can provide information on the location of Meloncello, which is very close.

Great Bologna experience!

Date of Stay: 03/06/11 Review Submitted: 03/15/11

The previous reviews were all correct! Great stay for one week in March 2011. If you chose this Bologna location, you are in for a treat. Read the 'guest book' for good leads on restaurants and site-seeing suggestions. Would definitely return in the future and will recommend to friends. Loved the walk into the center of town and the bus is easy too. I found the property much nicer and bigger than it appeared in the photos... maybe it's great high ceilings, being on the top floor or the wonderful views of Bologna out the windows. The wonderful kitchen even inspired me to tap into my "inner Italian". I wouldn't change a thing. These folks have the vacation rental concept fine-tuned to perfection. (I will now incorporate some of your ideas -- love IKEA! -- in my Tucson VRBO.) We did to go to Olivo's to see Anna Rita's original paintings after enjoying her art work so much in the apartment. Loved the ease of paying on Paypal. Thanks again for the attention to detail (read: ricotta torte)! Bravo!

A lovely week at Cassiopea.

We enjoyed a great week in Bologna, staying in this charming apartment. All mod cons are provided (including fantastic air conditioning - a must during the baking August heat), and the apartment itself is tastefully decorated and very clean. The balocny, although small, is the perfect place to enjoy breakfast in the morning and a candle-lit meal in the evening. There are excellent shops nearby to buy delicious local produce (try the ice cream at the local Gelateria) and the very centre of the city is only about a 20 minute walk away. We would certainly recommend Cassiopea to anyone and hope to be back ourselves in the future.

I would stay here just for the Anna Rita's ricotta torta! However, the bonus is the warm, welcoming environment provided by Anna Rita and Piero. Prior to renting the apartment, the communication was terrific and there were no surprises. The apartment felt like home and was even bigger than pictured. The little balcony was perfect for a morning espresso or late afternoon antipasto and vino. After a long day of sightseeing, it was great to come back to a comfortable bed. The location was great as we were only a 15 min walk to the center of the city and there were many shops and good restaurants close to the apartment.Highly recommended for your stay in Bologna.

A Wonderful Month's Stay at Cassiopea

Guest: Ron and Felicia (Denver, CO, USA)
Date of Stay: 05/01/10 Review Submitted: 05/29/10

Notes from Ron and Felicia - Denver, CO Stayed May 1st through May 31st 2010 Like everyone else, we loved the Ricotta Torta. The apartment is bright and cheerful and we never had to use the air conditioning or the heat. By opening the windows we always had a refreshing breeze. The location is wonderful—it’s very convenient for day-to-day shopping on Viale Andrea Costa and only a ten minute bus ride or 20 minute walk to the center of things—Piazza Maggiore. Anna Rita and Pier, the owners, stocked the apartment with all the essentials and were more than just landlords—they were warm and informative friends. Recommended places in the apartment vicinity: -Pasticceria Venice—the guy there is a sweetheart and will make having a cafe and a dolci a pleasure. He’ll remember your preferences -Panoficio Tubertini (next to the Venice) – has the best bread around (more Roman than Bolognese) and sells a round, breakfast sweet bread called Ciambelle Casalinghe which is highly addictive. -The Co-Op for shopping—it’s a bit small and crowded but it has everything you need to shop for “cooking in.” -With few exceptions the trattorias around the vicinity are good. We ate in most of them and only ever had one mediocre meal. Other folks in this apartment's diary book have waxed eloquent about their favorite restaurants—no need to duplicate all that here. -We loved the walk up to Basiclica San Luca through the 666 arches—you can walk it both ways from the apartment if you’ve got young legs, or you can, as we did, take a taxi to the top and then walk back to the apartment. The walk back took perhaps 45 minutes. -I took a three day pasta making class at La Vecchia Scuole (a ten minute walk) and loved it. You can take fewer or more days of the classes but it’s not something you want to pass up. The folks are great and you’ll learn the basics of a great Bolognese tradition. The cost is reasonable, plus it’s only a ten minute walk away. In our opinion we made a wise choice by renting Anna Rita and Pier’s apartment. You’re in for a treat. Enjoy! Ron and Felicia

Two weeks in Bologna

Guest: MNR (Houston, Texas)
Date of Stay: 03/22/10 Review Submitted: 04/12/10

We spent 2 weeks at Cassiopea at the end of March 2010. We used the apartment as a base to visit Bologna and explore some of the cities of Emilia Romagna. We traveled primarily by train. Bologna has great train service. The apartment is quite nice and I believe a pretty typical Bologna apartment. It is well situated in a very pleasant neighborhood, about a 10 minute bus ride from the center of town and the train station. The area was very nice to walk in. The apartment was quite comfortable for 3 people. The appliances are all new. Piero and Anna Rita were, as described, quite hospitable. The only downside to the apartment is that it is on the 3d floor (61 steps), but we still found it relatively easy to deal with. Overall our visit quite delightful.

We stayed at Cassiopea from 17 Oct 2009 - 24 Oct 2009 and loved it. Anna Rita and Piero greeted us as family and, of course, we enjoyed the ricotte tart and wine. The apartment was spacious, quiet, clean, and very comfortable. It was easy to take the bus or walk into the center of Bologna, a great Italian university city. Thanks again Anna Rita and Piero for helping to make our stay so memorable.

We stayed from 9/12-9/26/2009-- Bologna (ended up as our favorite place in Italy)- due in a large part to Anna Rita and Piero-- they welcomed us-- with yes , her ricotte tart and wine!-- The kitchen was well stocked with the essentials and more! Loved eating on the patio overlooking the tile roofs- Everything was available-- would be helpful if an Italian -English dictionary was available and an English channel on the TV- but we were too exhausted most nights to use them anyway--The Tavo Caldo at the bus stop was very convenient and good- public transportation (trains and buses) very easy to use- while in Bologna we took day trips to Venice, Ferra, Verona, and Ravenna-- but one of our favorite places was Dozza- just a bus ride outside of Bologna- We did not have a car- so having the bus stop close was great- however it was just a 20 minute walk to the historic center- so we usually walked to town and then rode the bus home- getting to the train station was easy!Spent time wandering the university area- the archeology museum and the Anatomy theater are wonderful- We took the orientation tour from the Plaza- well worth it- make sure you visit the seven churches and the Cemetery!! I could go on-& on about the food! Meloncello is a 13-15 walk from the apartment and serves great Bolognese dishes! Please e-mail me if you have any questions-- it was a great place to start our Italy vacation-- and I would most definitely refer anyone to the apartment! In fact I already have!

We stayed at Cassiopea for two weeks this May (2009). We were actually sad to leave as it had become our home; stairs and all! The apartment was just as described and very comfortable. Wonderful location for anything in Bologna. Quiet street. Super easy bus access. We got to know some of the people at various neighborhood businesses which made us "Bolognese" for just a bit. Sitting on the small veranda sipping wine, eating parmesiana and prosciutto; molto bellisimo! Anna Rita is very attentive to her guest's needs and will do whatever is necessary to make them comfortable. Her torte is molto bene! For Americans remember, this is Italy with European hand-held type showers but if that bothers you, stay home! It is nice to see Anna Rita taking credit cards. We were not able to do this and arranging bank transfers is a real pain! Everything considered, if you really want to "live" Italy, and particularly Bologna, Cassiopea is a fantastic place to do it.

Owner response:Thank you so much, Karen. I truly look forward to having you here again. For what a credit card payment is concerned - I know, is a real pain for us too, but unfortunately in this country individual businesses like vacation rentals have no access to the credit card POS stream system. We do accept credit cards for payments through PayPal, though.

Gene and I spent the month of Sept. at Cassiopea and it was truly a vacation we will never forget. Anna Rita and Piero are simply wonderful!!! Their friendship was the highlight of our trip. We chose Bologna because of the great train service throughout Italy. We were on the go everyday and found travel very easy. From the apartment we walked half a block, turned the corner, caught the bus, went to the train station and took the train to wherever. The apartment had everything we needed nearby, grocery store, internet cafe and restaurants. Everything in Bologna is within walking distance of the apartment. The apartment itself was stocked with everything you can imagine and if anything needed attention, it was taken care of immediately. Of all the choices of apartments in Bologna we are so glad we chose Cassiopea and would certainly go back there again.

Owner response:Thank you so much, Sandy & Gene. It was a true pleasure meeting you. Piero and I look forward to having you over again soon. Ciao!

Jeff's and my three weeks in Bologna and the Emilia Romagna were greatly enhanced by staying in Cassiopea. Doing historical research all day, we were able to "come home" every afternoon to relax in a lovely and comfortable setting. I enjoyed cooking in the well-equipped kitchen. Having other amenities of home, such as a washing machine and dishwasher, made everything easy. The hospitality and generosity of owners Anna Rita and Piero was well beyond gracious. It was an "Italian experience" in itself -- one we will always remember and cherish. Like everyone else, I am determined to figure out how to make Anna Rita's ricotta cake -- it was so delicious. We'll be back and give this property the highest of recommendations. Even the four floor walk-up was good for us!

We spent a week here and it was a fabulous experience! The house is very pretty, comfortable, extra clean and stocked with everything one may need, probably the best rental we ever got. The view over the roofs of Bologna is great and the neighborhood is safe, very colorful and friendly with the center at only 8 minutes walk and the bus stop right at the corner. Do not miss the Ristorante Cannone and the pizzeria nearby. Annarita and Piero were great hosts. 100% recommended -a great value for your money!

Hello Anna Rita and Pier Francesco, David and I wanted to say thank you for your lovely accommodation. We really enjoyed coming home to Cassiopea after exploring Bologna and the surrounding area. Many thanks to you both as well for the quick response to the defective washing machine. We were very impressed to have a new machine the same day! The longer drainage hose in the bathtub works much better. We travel a lot and have stayed at many places around the world. Cassiopea is one of our favourites, as it's very comfortable, the kitchen has everything you could need, the balcony and views are lovely, it's quiet and yet very close to the city by bus. We also appreciated internet access as we were able to keep in touch with family and our business in Canada. As well, the kitchen and bath supplies, the bathrobes and slippers, bus ticket, lovely bottle of wine and the delicious ricotta cake, were all very welcome. I would love the recipe for the ricotta cake to share with friends and family! We have told friends and family about Cassiopea. If we return to Bologna, we would love to stay here again.

Highly recommended! We enjoyed a week at Cassiopea and didn't have a single restaurant meal, since the well-equipped kitchen allowed us to prepare gourmet meals from the wonderful produce in the markets or take out items from the fabulous delis. Great location in a quiet neighborhood with convenient bus connections downtown and to the train station. Local shops mean you can settle in and feel right at home, or do day trips to all the interesting places nearby in Emilia-Romagna. We will definitely plan to stay at Cassiopea again on our next visit to Bologna.

We very much enjoyed our stay in "Cassiopea" last month. It was very cheerful, convenient, and well-equipped (including the delicious ricotta cake!), and made an excellent base for our stay in Italy. We will never forget an amazing act of hospitality from Anna Rita: On the day we arrived in Bologna I left an important item in the taxi, and Anna Rita managed to find the taxi driver, and personally retrieved my item! Some restaurants we enjoyed in Bologna were al Tavolaccio (Via Andrea Costa, left from Via Zannoni), Da Ercole (on Piazza Minghetti, in the city center), and La Scalinatella (on small side street running north from Piazza Maggiore, Via Caduti di Cefalonia 5). These are all very moderately priced and have excellent food.

We are just finishing a two-week stay in Anna Rita's apartment. Everything was delightful and exactly as described. Anna Rita is also, flexible, effervescent, and left us a delicious ricotta cake to help welcome us. One of the nice features of the apartment is that there are a lot of items in it that would normally require a start-up trip to the market. Most, I suppose left by other guests. Things like shampoos, olive oil, detergent, etc. Hot water and heat are delivered by a heater in the kitchen and are more than adequate. There are separate air conditioners in the living room and the kitchen, though in November we didn't need them. The views from the windows are city views of the tile rooftops that are typical of Bologna. The windows are big and the ceilings are about 12 feet. The bus around the corner takes you to the center of town in about 15 minutes, and the walk is not much longer. Bus service is about every six minutes at peak times, stretching to about 15 minutes at off times. The neighborhood is very friendly and safe. There are lots of small merchants, good restaurants (particularly Cannone) and a take-out place (Rosticeria) across the street. Anna Rita also provides superb information in the house about where to go, what to do, and how to do it. The broadband is terrific. BTW, I used Skype to talk to the US. GSM cell phones work here as well. To sum up, the apartment was great, like home. I heartily recommend it.

I have to confess I was a bit skeptical when reading so many glowing reviews; it is hard to please everyone. However, we were delighted to find that the apartment and our experience were as lovely as described. It was hard to leave the cosy comfortable life in this Bologna apt.! I particularly recommend the nearby cooking school, Vecchia Escola, for an afternoon of eating and learning how to make the specialties of Bologna.

"This is a charmingly comfortable apartment which my husband and I look forward to renting again. The owner is one of the cheeriest persons on the planet who greets guests with her own freshly baked (and delicious!) ricotta torte. For those who like to cook, the kitchen is well planned and generously stocked with all the basics and then some (we've rented apartments in the past where there wasn't even salt). The bathroom is also well-stocked--right down to ear swabs and bandaides--and the big bathtub is a bubblebath lover's dream. "Home away from home" is no exaggeration when summing up the experience of staying in this very special apartment."

Hello Anna Rita, As my vacation is coming to an end, I thought to drop you a "Thank You" line. I found your apartment very pleasant and comfortable, perfectly situated on a quiet street, yet easy to get to the centre of the city. I made it my "residence" in Northern Italy and I took day trips to Firenze, Rimini, Ferrara - there are more to be seen - maybe next time... Bologna is everything I anticipated, the only disappointment is the graffiti defacing the centuries old portici - I felt like complaining to the city council. (Seriously!!!). I will be leaving tomorrow around 7:00 - I will drop the key into the mail box. By the way, the ricotta cake you baked was so good, please send me the recipe - if it is not a secret. Hopefully I will return to Bologna some day... Yours truly, Irina

This is a charmingly comfortable apartment which my husband and I look forward to renting again. "Home away from home" is no exaggeration when summing up the experience of staying in this very special apartment.

Very quiet, beautiful and decorated apartment. Located at in a very typical Bolognese neighborhood where you can find everything you may need for confortable stay. But above all, Rita the owner, what a delightful person. I recommend this place to all.

The flat itself is quite small but perfectly suitable as a base for a stay in Bologna. Anna Rita and her husband couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming. The flat is beautifully clean, the beds comfortable and very quiet at night. Access to the centre of Bologna is very easy - we walked in as recommended by Anna Rita, though it's obviously easy to get in by bus.

Very quiet and peaceful--it felt like an oasis in the hustle and bustle of the big city. The neighborhood was nice and we felt totally safe, even at night. We were able to walk to the center in five minutes and taking public transport to the center was equally easy. Anna Rita was friendly and easy to work with. Overall, we had a very good experience.

Absolutely perfect accommodation; very clean; very nice area; lovely views from apartment at top of house; easy access by bus into centre of Bologna, which is walking distance anyhow. Owner provided much more than we could ever have expected - 100%; so very helpful with information and extremely kind and friendly.

Anna Rita's apartment was great, everything was fine, clean and well set in the overall! She was very hospitable and she arranged more than we expected. The house is quiet and safe and the furniture was chosen with excellent taste. There was room enough for the 4 of us to cook our meals during the week and enjoy ourselves indoor during the rainy days. The house is warm at wintertime. One of our best accommodations ever."
