The tourist towns of the Lot.
Rocamadour: Even before the 10th century, an ancient oratory dedicated to the Virgin Mary was built against the cliff on the edge of the spectacular Alzou Canyon. Rocamadour became an important pilgrimage place in the Christian West as Santiago de Compostella, thanks to the progress of the Marian cult and thanks to the discovery, in 1166, of the body named St Amadour.
St Cirq Lapopie: A ancient medieval town ,spectacularly built up a mountainside .
Figeac: The home town of M Champolion who deciphered hieroglyphics .On the route of the Tour de France 2006. The town of Figeac is in the Lot, nestling beneath the Massif Central. A wealthy medieval trading town during the Middle Ages, is now renowned for its markets, shopping and exceptional heritage boasting both country and town palaces. Pursuing a policy of renovation on its sandstone façades and sumptuous houses and their decorative sculptures. A shoppers paradise.
Conques: This Unesco world heritage site receives over 600,000 visitors each year. According to the legend, it was the hermit Dadon who gave Conques its name, from the Latin "concha" ("shell"), due to its rocky configuration. Joined by other monks, Dadon founded a community according to the code of Saint Benoît. Protestants ruined the monastery in the 16th century: it was partially burned, as were others in Aveyron.
Villefranche-De-Rouergue: Lying between the Lot and the Aveyron, the countryside around Villefranche de Rouergue reveals its secrets which go back thousands of years: cave dwellings from prehistoric times, castles, Romanesque and Gothic churches, monasteries and abbeys, royal walled towns left to us by the men of the Middle Ages. The region and its inhabitants have retained and handed down a rich and varied natural, historical and artistic heritage.
