Hale Mahina, meaning house of the moon, is conveniently located about two miles south past the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in the Golf Course and Country Club Division. It is nestled among the Ohia trees in one of the worlds most beautiful forests. Enjoy the crisp mountain air at the crest of the sunny side of Volcano.
This cozy 2 bedroom, 2 bath home is built in the Plantation Cottage style with an open floor plan.
Rooms are large, comfortable and clean, and our fully equipped kitchen allows you to cook in. Area farmers markets daily in Hilo and Sundays Open Market at Volcano offer produce at its best along with island crafts. Think fresh papaya every morning. The Volcano Winery is 539 steps away from the house where you can view the vineyards and enjoy free wine tastings. If you choose not to cook in, Volcano Village has several restaurants serving lunch and dinner and there are also two small country grocery stores. ATM's are available here.
The Volcano Golf Course is a beautiful 18 hole course in the view plane of Mauna Loa (13,680') with the clubhouse restaurant serving breakfast and lunch.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers a visitors center to guide you through the vastness of this incredible National Park. Daily volcano activity is available here for day and night viewing. Tour by car or walk/hike the miles of trails while hearing the songs of the native forest birds. You will learn about our local active Volcano, Kilauea at Jagger Museum.
Sea Mountain Golf Course and Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, where you might see Green sea turtles, is a beautiful 35 minute drive. Hilo is a 45 minute drive where you will find waterfalls, shopping, beaches and Botanical Gardens.
The area also has several exceptional art galleries which shouldn't be missed.
As cocktail hour approaches, watch from your lanai as the sun sets behind Mauna Loa, while the colorful neighborhood kalij pheasants scurry to their night time nests. As the cool night air descends upon the village, snuggle up to the warmth of the gas log fire place. Do venture out after dark to see the stars on our new back deck or take a hike in the park to see the latest lava activity though. You certainly won't be disappointed.

We stayed two nights in this excellent house. Description of the property, photos on the website are accurate, you get all that promised, and more! House was spotless, good condition. Fireplace was great at night, made the evening very comfortable. Interaction with Cheryl was easy, friendly and quick. Great location for visiting the park. Good diner at the nearby golf course. Would and most likely will return in the future. Mahalo!Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers.

This is a review sent via our email in regards to our cottage -she asked me to post it for her. "What a wonderful place to stay in Volcano for a week!!!. We wished we had been at Hale Mahina Cottage for a much longer time. But we'll come back for sure. Our son from Honolulu came over for a weekend. He was - as well as we were - fascinated by the amenities, above all the electric blankets and the good working fireplace. So nice to enjoy the cool nights and a cozy breakfast room in the morning. We loved to watch the apapane in the Ohia tree while having our meals. All rooms were very well equipped and decorated and impeccably clean. We admired the wonderful quilts giving the house a unique Hawaiian touch Another reason for a MUST - RETURN is the location. It's so quiet and only some minutes away from the Halemaumau crator. A must-see in the evening when glowing."Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

I really enjoyed my stay in the cottage. It has all you might need and more. It feels homely and is very clean. The cottage is very close to the Volcano National Park so coming back late in the evening to see the volcano’s glow is not a problem (did it couple of times). Hilo and the Black Sand Beach are not far and even the drive to Kona is ok. I would recommend this cottage to everybody!Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car, adventure seekers.

My brother and I stayed at this property for two days while visiting Volcano National park. The location was excellent - just a few miles from the main entrance to the park and in a relatively sunny part of the area (compared to staying in Volcano itself). The cottage was very comfortable and well appointed. The owners were responsive to our inquiry and were helpful in planning out stay. The house was clean, the beds were comfortable, and the kitchen had everything we needed to prepare meals. I highly recommend this property to anyone interested in visiting Volcano National park. On a separate note, Volcano has a wonderful farmer's market on Sunday mornings that is worthwhile.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, age 55+.
Owner response: Yes, if any guests are staying over a weekend the Wright Road Farmers Market in Volcano is highly recommended. Thanks for the plug for it. Frank and I hit it every Sunday we are there. The Pastry Lady is awesome besides selling tasty pastries.

We spent nearly three weeks in this charming cottage. It is immaculate, very comfortable and filled with thoughtful touches. It was the ideal home base for visiting friends, playing golf and relaxing by the fire. Well-equipped cook's kitchen made it easy to prepare tasty meals or enjoy leftovers from Thai Thai restaurant, one of our local favorites. Manager Cilla is an excellent resource for pop-up seasonal activities in the area, a great supplement to the info on hiking and more on hand in the cottage. We would definitely recommend to friends and family, and hope to return soon.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+.
Owner response: Cilla is indeed incredible. We would be lost without her. We have never had anyone comment that the cottage wasn't anything but impeccably clean.....and she is an awesome lady otherwise.

Hale Mahina is the nicest place Dr. Higa and I have ever rented. Everything in the home was top quality and we loved the decorations and art work. The kitchen and bathrooms were well supplied and even though we stayed three nights, I did not use the washer and dryer, but was happy to see it in case we wanted to use it. Lovely home, lovely location and very helpful owners. Far exceeded our expectations. Looking forward to another stay in the future. I really hated to leave. Felt priviledged to be allowed to stay there. Our family of 4 loved our stay at Hale Mahina Cottage. The house is fully and thoughtfully equiped for guests. We cooked all our meals and greatly enjoyed the extra seasonings and condiments in the kitchen. The house has a wonderful relaxed feeling and was a pleasure to come back to after a day in Volcano National Park. After our 7.5 hour hike out to see the lava flow, we greatly enjoyed relaxing and watching a movie together - there is a nice selection of movies for all ages. The house is literally a few minutes from the entrance to the park. We would come back to Hale Mahina Cottage in a heartbeat...you won't be disappointed!Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers.
Owner response: I love hiking at the Park and relish the idea we are close enough to return to Hale Mahina Cottage and put our feet up after a long hike. Being outdoors in the Park is my biggest love of time spent there besides seeing family and friends. Mahalo, Cheryl

The cottage exceeded our expectations, even though the reviews we read were also extremely positive. The cottage is very well stocked and maintained; everything worked and worked well. We cooked several meals, and found that the cooking utensils and condiments were just what we needed, and exceeded what we have found in most rentals. The cottage was lovely and very comfortable, with beautiful local artworks on the walls. The owner recommended restaurants and activities which we found very helpful, even though we had been to Volcano twice before. I would stay at Hale Mahina cottage again without question.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Frank and I are always amazed at the talented artists in the area. The Volcano Garden Art Center and Volcano Art Center have some beautiful works. Glad you enjoyed it also.

We loved staying at the Hale Mahina Cottage. It was the perfect location to visit the volcano and surrounding areas. The cottage is very clean and well maintained. There were even some toys and games available to keep our 2 year old daughter entertained, so that was a great perk. Overall, we had a wonderful experience staying here and would recommend it to anyone. If we ever get back to the Big Island, we would definitely stay again!Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: Frank is originally from Hilo Hawaii and Cheryl from Minnesota. We purchased our home in Volcano 2007 and plan to use it as a retirement retreat in the future. We love the solitude of the area.
Why the Owner Chose Volcano:
Frank and I have lived in HOT climates all of our 40+ years of marriage and were looking for a mild climate where a jacket can be worn. We have lived in places where high 90's or triple digit temps aren't unusual. Volcano fits the bill exactly plus as a artist/quilter I find it a perfect place to create.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The peace and quiet of Hale Mahina Cottage and having a home to entertain our family and friends while we are visiting the Big Island of Hawai'i.
