Kula cottage description

Our chalet overlooks the entire central valley between Pu'u Kukui on West Maui, and the great Volcano Haleakala, upon which your home away from home is perched. Enjoy spectacular views of both south and north shores, with azure oceans and far off horizons.

Inside, your chalet is fully carpeted. The kitchen provides complete amenities for stay-at-home meals, which you can enjoy outside on your lanai, or inside. A full compliment of reading classics and Hawaiian literature give you good reason to put your feet up, soak in the cool mountain air, and watch the glorious sunsets, which are always better than expected.

You will be perfectly situated to enjoy nearby enticements, including hiking nearby on country roads. Down your mountain driveway five minutes is Grandma's Coffee House, for home-baked morning goodies and coffee, or drive a little further to Paia or Pukalani. You're just 15 minutes from the Maui Wineries and tasting tours, 20 minutes from Makawao's Upcountry stores, and 30 minutes from white sand northshore beaches, popular for swimming, surfing and windsurfing. And of course, when you are ready to experience Haleakala's magnificent crater and volcano hikes, you're an hour away.

We hope you will consider our chalet not so much your vacation rental as your home on Maui while you enjoy your stay. Staying with us, you will truly discover why Maui is No Ka Oi - Maui is the best!

Our recent stay at this cozy little chalet cottage was awesome but only because we wanted for nothing. Wilma has provided everything we needed including her expert advice on what to see, where to eat, and we just had several wonderful conversations which made us feel like family. Our only regret was that we couldn't stay a few more days here. The bed was so comfortable, the views from the deck were spectacular, loved having laundry facilities and wifi, and loved the privacy and quiet. Everything was very clean as well and it was nice to have the heater to take the chill out in the morning. Great sleeping weather upcountry. Wilma, you and your property rock!

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights. The wonderful manager Wilma phoned us to say we shouldn't hurry about leaving because no renter was expected that day. We found the house more than ample. The bed was comfortable, the kitchen well-equipped, the living/dining room comfortable, everything clean and well-maintained. There were some other houses on the very steep driveway but we enjoyed privacy and quiet. At 3,500 feet the house got chilly, so we made use of the additional heaters thoughtfully provided. My sole quibble: I wish there was a bureau. The absence of any drawers meant we lived out of suitcases, which was inconvenient and messy. We used the house as our base for exploring the Upcountry. Our day at the top of Haleakala was clear, but the ranger told us that the volcano is often socked in. I'd suggest you check on visibility before setting out on an arduous drive. Bring warm clothes -- it can be cold and windy at 10,000 feet. We explored the movie-set town of Makawao. I'd advise going any day but Sunday if you wish to sample the Komoda Bakery, much recommended by travelers. We hiked in a state forest preserve in Olinda, just south of Makawao. Another reason for not visiting on Sunday (or Saturday) is that on weekends the forest is crawling with riflemen hunting wild pigs and goats. We finished up the day at Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center. It rained heavily one day, which scotched hikes in the Polipoli Springs State Recreation Area. We appreciated how nice the house was to be in during the storm. When the rain let up we walked from the house into a ranch, then treated ourselves to good, reasonably priced dinner at the Bistro in Kula.

Manager response: You covered lots of ground upcountry in spite of the rain. I was impressed. It was such a pleasure meeting both of you! Thanks to your suggestion the drawers of the bureau are now available for use! Good suggestion!

What a lovely surprise! The cottage was so private and romantic for us. Super clean and with a very comfortable bed .We had everything we could need with great views that changed through out the day and night. We felt this was a very good value on all counts. Most of all the cool sleeping weather was wonderful after beach time at sea level.. Can't wait to return to this most private cottage..

We loved the view from the deck morning and evening. Best yet, Wilma is friendly and welcoming. She answered all our questions and has excellent advice about where to eat, shop for groceries and swim. Our trip wouldn't have been the same without her guidance. The cottage is comfy. It had everything we needed. The gardens surrounding the cottage and in this neighborhood made us feel like we were in a tropical paradise with its lush green countryside, local fruit trees, rock fence lines, and richly colored flowers, The photos of the house do not do it justice. We found this house to be the perfect size and would definitely stay here again and recommend it to friends.

This peaked, Alpine-style chalet has a broad lanai overlooking Mauis central valley; you get a great sunset almost every night. The description as given here is accurate, the photos are truthful (but there should be one of the view); the property was very clean and well-maintained, the owner responsive. We were surprised to see a chameleon cross the road as we arrived at this cottage--we hadn't known these amazing lizards have formed colonies in the Islands. That put us in a mood for surprises, and we were surprised again by the cottage. Two floors, carpeted throughout, TV, very comfortable (though it could use footstools, as I told the owner); spotlessly clean, smelling lightly of cedar.. It's isolated; you have to drive for 20 minutes to reach anything other than a couple of small (but nice) restaurants--but thats okay, we were looking for peace and quiet. It's calm and serene, but comfortable and well-appointed. The owner was quick to help on a minor matter, invisible otherwise. I'd love to stay here again.

Our chalet week was thoroughly relaxing. The best part for us was brunches on the deck with fresh tropical fruit. Afternoons sipping wine with cheese and crackers were a close second. We ended up staying at the chalet more than we expected, venturing down briefly only for occasional shopping and dining. Most people don't believe it when we tell them, but we never even hit the beaches. Having a car is essential, but we didn't need to put very many miles on it. It's hard to imagine something more comfortable and affordable. We're looking forward to the next time we can get-away to Maui Upcountry at Keli's.

Our stay here was absolutely heavenly. It's an alternative for those who want to get away from the noise and tourist traffic of the busy beach strips of Maui, but still appreciate a stunning view from a wall of windows overlooking the island and the ocean below, and of course the same view from the beautiful big sundeck where every morning we enjoyed our breakfast coffee sitting around in our jammies. The property is so lush, quiet and completely private. We truly had all the comforts of home with a modern fully-equipped kitchen, tasteful decor, comfy beds (even laundry facilities - perfect after a busy day out and about!) An unexpected delight turned out to be this unique location! This, we felt, was like living in the REAL Maui, surrounded by charming little plantation hill towns like Pukalani, Makawao and Haliimaile. No matter which direction we drove out our driveway, we knew we were sure to find vistas, lovely parks, friendly coffee shops and local history even more intriguing than the day before. With warm days and nice cool nights, it felt just right. One evening, we drove farther up the road right to the summit of the Haleakala volcano to watch the sunset, the next day to the Kula Botanical Gardens, the next to the Pukalani Golf Club for their famous weekly dinner special, the next down to the picturesque artists' village of Paia and the little neighbourhood sandy beach that Wilma had told us about - amazingly, we had this beach virtually to ourselves, as only the locals go there. We never would have even found this out-of-the-way beach if we hadn't been staying at Wilma's! You could spend a great holiday in Kula never going anywhere near the tourist areas! The location here is an easy, straightforward and scenic drive from the airport and all the shops of Kahului. Once in town, if we turned one way, we'd arrive at the beaches of Kihea and Wailea, if we turned the other, we'd be on the spectacular twisty-turning road to Hana or on the up-island road to historic Lahaina. But as fun as it was to explore the rest of magnificent Maui, we loved turning the car around at the end of each day and heading back 'up-country', home to Kula, surrounded by lush gardens, farms, historic ranchland, and THOSE VIEWS! We stayed there in the springtime, when the jacaranda trees lining the roads of Kula were in full bloom - in fact, we often had to pull over to take photos of those unbelievable neon purple displays!

I am not a person who enjoys the touristy aspects of a holiday; I prefer to experience the culture of a new place from the inside. So, for me the chalet in Kula was perfect. My vacation partner and I shopped for groceries in Pukalani and, for the most part, lived a quiet ten days "up-country." We did drive down the mountain to experience the beaches, do some souvenir shopping and take some side trips. But, we spent hours with good books and lovely wines, sitting on the lanai enjoying the breathtaking scenery. It was cool in the mornings and evenings and we had a mix of weather. A beautiful, relaxing holiday. Wilma gave us some avocados from a neighbour's tree; the guacamole we made was delicious! I slept in the loft while my friend had the bedroom. We were both very comfortable. The chalet was clean and had everything we needed. If lying on the beach all day is your thing, then this might not be the place for you, but if you want to blend in with the true Maui and experience the up-country cooler weather, you will love the stay in "your" little house!
