Upcountry: Quiet and Amazing View

Guest: Bruce and Judy (Portland)
Date of Stay: 11/03/10 Review Submitted: 01/19/12

Our chalet week was thoroughly relaxing. The best part for us was brunches on the deck with fresh tropical fruit. Afternoons sipping wine with cheese and crackers were a close second. We ended up staying at the chalet more than we expected, venturing down briefly only for occasional shopping and dining. Most people don't believe it when we tell them, but we never even hit the beaches. Having a car is essential, but we didn't need to put very many miles on it. It's hard to imagine something more comfortable and affordable. We're looking forward to the next time we can get-away to Maui Upcountry at Keli's.

Owner response:Thank you Bruce, Hope you return soon. Glad you enjoyed your stay on Maui.

I enjoyed my stay. So quiet, great view, cozy accomodations! We were nestled in the mist. The weather was perfect. Cool, light sun, great hiking weather and ended with a cool mist in the late afternoon. I will go again!

Owner response:Looking forward to your return. Enjoyed your visit with us.

Off the beaten track - and worth it!!

Our stay here was absolutely heavenly. It's an alternative for those who want to get away from the noise and tourist traffic of the busy beach strips of Maui, but still appreciate a stunning view from a wall of windows overlooking the island and the ocean below, and of course the same view from the beautiful big sundeck where every morning we enjoyed our breakfast coffee sitting around in our jammies. The property is so lush, quiet and completely private. We truly had all the comforts of home with a modern fully-equipped kitchen, tasteful decor, comfy beds (even laundry facilities - perfect after a busy day out and about!) An unexpected delight turned out to be this unique location! This, we felt, was like living in the REAL Maui, surrounded by charming little plantation hill towns like Pukalani, Makawao and Haliimaile. No matter which direction we drove out our driveway, we knew we were sure to find vistas, lovely parks, friendly coffee shops and local history even more intriguing than the day before. With warm days and nice cool nights, it felt just right. One evening, we drove farther up the road right to the summit of the Haleakala volcano to watch the sunset, the next day to the Kula Botanical Gardens, the next to the Pukalani Golf Club for their famous weekly dinner special, the next down to the picturesque artists' village of Paia and the little neighbourhood sandy beach that Wilma had told us about - amazingly, we had this beach virtually to ourselves, as only the locals go there. We never would have even found this out-of-the-way beach if we hadn't been staying at Wilma's! You could spend a great holiday in Kula never going anywhere near the tourist areas! The location here is an easy, straightforward and scenic drive from the airport and all the shops of Kahului. Once in town, if we turned one way, we'd arrive at the beaches of Kihea and Wailea, if we turned the other, we'd be on the spectacular twisty-turning road to Hana or on the up-island road to historic Lahaina. But as fun as it was to explore the rest of magnificent Maui, we loved turning the car around at the end of each day and heading back 'up-country', home to Kula, surrounded by lush gardens, farms, historic ranchland, and THOSE VIEWS! We stayed there in the springtime, when the jacaranda trees lining the roads of Kula were in full bloom - in fact, we often had to pull over to take photos of those unbelievable neon purple displays!

Owner response:Thank you Carolyn, Glad you enjoyed Keli's. We enjoyed having you. Looking forward to your return!

Up-Country Maui

Guest: Judy (Victoria)
Date of Stay: 04/20/09 Review Submitted: 07/26/10

I am not a person who enjoys the touristy aspects of a holiday; I prefer to experience the culture of a new place from the inside. So, for me the chalet in Kula was perfect. My vacation partner and I shopped for groceries in Pukalani and, for the most part, lived a quiet ten days "up-country." We did drive down the mountain to experience the beaches, do some souvenir shopping and take some side trips. But, we spent hours with good books and lovely wines, sitting on the lanai enjoying the breathtaking scenery. It was cool in the mornings and evenings and we had a mix of weather. A beautiful, relaxing holiday. Wilma gave us some avocados from a neighbour's tree; the guacamole we made was delicious! I slept in the loft while my friend had the bedroom. We were both very comfortable. The chalet was clean and had everything we needed. If lying on the beach all day is your thing, then this might not be the place for you, but if you want to blend in with the true Maui and experience the up-country cooler weather, you will love the stay in "your" little house!

Owner response:Thanks, Judy! Glad you liked the quiet, upcountry life. We're looking forward to seeing you again.

Live like the locals!

Guest: Carolyn (Victoria)
Date of Stay: 04/20/09 Review Submitted: 07/26/10

I have stayed twice in this rental; the fabulous sunset pictures taken from the lanai scroll across my computer screen and bring back the lovely memories of our idyllic stays. It's a home away from home. Never did I look for something in the kitchen that wasn't there. The laundry facilities meant everything I took home was clean and ready to put away! We played SCRABBLE for hours on the lanai, listening to the birds, enjoying the magnificent views. We'd drive down the mountain to the beach or to do some touristy shopping and then would return to the cooler air and peace of our mountain chalet. We spent time at Grandma's Coffee House, explored the Lavender Farm and drove up to the Haleakala Crater. One day we made the trip to Hana and back....a complete circle. It was magical to arrive back in Kula knowing that others who made the trip would still have to go down the mountain highway and back to their tourist accommodation while we were already home! It is a perfect hideaway for anyone wanting to blend in with the Maui community. I can hardly wait to go back! One word of advice is to bring something warm like a sweatshirt for those cool mountain mornings and evenings. Any concerns? Contact Wilma; she is fabulous!

Owner response:Thank you, Carolyn. It's always a pleasure to welcome you to your home away from home.

A Hidden Gem in Upcountry

Guest: Sharbabe54 (Chino Hills, CA USA)
Date of Stay: 02/26/10 Review Submitted: 06/21/10

We have stayed on Maui several times in Kihei and Wailea and love it but Upcountry at the Chalet is the best! The views are amazing from the lanai especially at sunset and you're surrounded by nature at it's best. Lot's of privacy, close to Grandma House for dining and a great place to explore another side of the island we never had a chance to do. If you need anything, Wilma will be more than happy to help. We look forward to staying here again.

Owner response:Thank you Sharlene and Mike. We look forward to your next visit with us!
