Visitors to the State of Hawaii have many options for vacation accomodations. Resorts and Condos attract the majority of vacationers. In the past 40 years my wfe and I have sampled all of these, but our stay with Dan and Sarah in their Ohana (cottage) has been the most pleasant and economical by far. Dan and Sarah's family were excellent Hawaiian hosts and even included us in two family barbecues. Their Ohana is located in an excellent central location for traveling to all of the sights of Maui and their knowledge of the island is a great resource for new and returning visitors. My wife and I will be moving to Maui in the near future and I know that Ken and Sarah will become long term friends. Aloha and Mahalo to Dan and Sarah and we all know that Maui No Ka Oi.

Dan and Sarah are the epitome of Hawai'ian Aloha! When they found out we were travelling with small children they contacted friends to acquire baby furniture for our stay, so that we didn't have to bring so much stuff with us. On top of that, they delivered the car seat to the auto rental agency so that it would already be in the car for us! The children love the mangos off the tree for breakfast every morning, and were quick to make friends with "Auntie" and "Uncle". This was one of the most relaxing vacations we have ever had. It's like staying with friends. In fact, it really is staying with friends because by the time you leave you are all friends. They brought us the news insert that highlighted local activities for the week that we were there, and gave us great advice on things to do woth the kids. I can't wait to go back! I would take another vacation to Maui just to stay at Hale KanaKala again!!!

Warm Aloha indeed! Sarah and Dan were most welcoming, friendly and very helpful, although our privacy was always respected. The cottage itself was very clean, with plenty of room and everything working as it should. The barbecue was brilliant and we were encouraged to bring our guests. Loads of cooking equipment, snorkeling kit and other beach things too, a really comfortable home from home. The location was excellent. Quite easy to get to anywhere with good access by car to shops, beach and main roads for getting to other parts of the island. As far as Maui in general is concerned it really is a great place. Plenty of interest to explore, beaches to laze on or go swimming and snorkeling. Highly recommended and if we ever manage the rather long journey from Scotland again this is where we will choose to stay. Peter and Eileen

Like other reviewers, I can't say enough good things about how welcoming Sarah and Dan are to their guests. The cottage is neat as a pin and very clean. The yard is beautiful. The thoughtful touches provided in the cottage were a wonderful surprise. The photos on line do not show how well appointed the cottage is - the linens and kitchen equipment are great. Having the use of extras like bikes, beach chairs, snorkle stuff, coolers and boogie boards made our trip much nicer. Having dependable access to the internet and a printer, too, came in really handy for printing maps and tour confirmations. From a practical point of view, both the bed and sofa were comfortable and everything we used worked perfectly: both showers, the frig & freezer, the fans, the washer, the clothes line, the television. If you are planning to have a car to get around to all the gorgeous places on Maui, you can not go wrong with this wonderful cottage! Thanks to Sarah and Dan -- we had a great time and hope to return!

The cottage was very comfortable for two people. The cottage was very clean and well maintained. The neighborhood is quiet, and very close to downtown Kihei. It was lovely having a mango tree outside the door. The owners were very friendly and helpful in every way. The cottage is well stocked with all the basics you need as well as beach equipment. The king sized bed was on the firm side. I was given a beautiful lei made by one of the owners, on the final evening, that she had made of fragrant plumeria flowers. There is good parking for a rental vehicle, and the location of this cottage in Kehei is close to everything. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Aloha!

We actually checked this place for my sister who has now stayed here 3 years in a row and our first impression was that it was located in a sketchy area but after my sister and now we have stayed there the area is perfectly fine and is perfect for a true Hawaiian experience. Dan & Sarah are fantastic people to rent from and are very knowledgeable about Maui as well as the Hawaiian culture. The outdoor cooking facility (with sink) and patio are much more spacious than most rentals and have everything that you’ll need to eat in. The Tiki torches provide a wonderful ambience while enjoying an evening in the yard. Their Ohana is very well equipped and has everything you may need during your stay. The washer is a great bonus for long stays and they have pretty much everything one might need to spend a day at the beach, beach chairs, snorkel equipment, boogie boards and coolers. Most restaurants are an easy 5 to 10 minute drive away as are the best sunny beaches in south Kihei with our favourite being Kamaole I! Their Ohana is a perfect rental for a couple to stay and is adaptable for 4 people if you are willing to sleep on a hide-a-bed, which is what we did however we found it to be more comfortable putting the mattress & pad directly on the floor for our 9 day stay on the hide-a-bed. Dan & Sarah allow you all the privacy you choose but they’ve certainly become family to us and we enjoyed many evening barbeques, card games or just visiting after a day of exploring Maui. Mahalo Dan, Sarah & Tutu we’ll see you next year!

The best thing about this cottage is the hosts! Sarah and Dan have true Aloha - they treat you like family during your stay. What a unique opportunity to get to know a native Hawaiian family! The cottage is well-maintained and very well-stocked for things a vacationing family might need. The outdoor picnic table was a real plus - we ate every meal there. Most meals were cooked outside on the BBQ, which was immense. While you are there, be sure to ask to see their beautiful hand-crafted Hawaiian jewelry. They give guests special prices, which are an amazing value. Thank you, Sarah and Dan, for making us a part of your home. You'll be welcome in ours, should you ever make it to Alaska for a visit!

What a nice surprise to find a quiet setting yet close to all the activites on Maui, the cottage was very comfortable and clean with carport and outdoor grill also many tropical trees and plants in the yard. Beach chairs ,boogie boards and snorkel equipment was found in the carport with a washing machine to make our vist that much better. The time we spent with Dan and Sarah was very injoyable ,we are planning a return trip to Maui next year and will be calling Sarah for accommodation and have already recommend thier place to friend's here in Alaska. In December 2011, I returned to the cottage for the third time. A real home away from home. All the conveniences, necessities you need and want, to be comfortable and at ease. Walking distance to the ocean, your own lanai (patio) with a grill, picnic table and lounge chairs. Close to some of the best restaurants, grocery stores, local shopping. A short drive to Wailea, gorgeous beaches, near golf courses. Whatever your desire it's a short drive away. Walk down to the beach and watch the beautiful sunsets, take a ride up to Malaea(?) Bay to whale watch or stop at the Pali Lookout on the scenic drive to Lahaina. You will be staying in your own private cottage with Mt. Haleakala to the east and the ocean to the west in a real Hawaiian neighborhood. Josie Pasco, Dan and Sarah Coennen will show you the meaning of the Aloha Spirit. They are my Hawaiian Ohana (family) and the good Lord willing and the creek don't rise, I shall return again next year. Helen Cauwels

Sarah and Dan provide a clean, quiet, spacious, private, fully stocked cottage! We had a wonderful stay! Kihei is very central, making it the perfect location to explore the whole island! We also really liked that there is plenty of free parking in Kihei (not always the case with the resort beaches on the west side of the island). The cottage is only a short drive from many restaurants and the main beaches in Kihei. One of the highlights of staying at the cottage is the tandem beach cruiser bike that Sarah and Dan have!! So much fun and a great way to explore! The snorkeling equipment, beach chairs and coolers provided are all in great condition. We were walking (or biking) distance to a beautiful beach to watch the sunset! Close to Boss Frogs for renting surf or paddleboards! Sarah provided great advice about the island, and the best places to shop. Thank you Sarah and Dan - we can't wait to come back and visit, hopefully for longer next time!

Our stay in this cottage has been fantastic. The owners are very friendly and helpful. You will get more than you could expect. Very clean, BBQ area, outdoor shower when you come back from the beach, private parking slot, equipment for snorkilng, bodyboards, ... The location is very quiet and the owners are available for any questions or advices. We spent 6 days in kihei and we will come back and will rent this cottage again. You are very close to the beaches and all types of accomodations. For our last day they also offered us necklaces of flowers! And the price is very cheap compared to what is practiced in the most of the hotels and compared to the proposed services. So if you want to escape reasorts and enjoy Maui quietly, only for a lovely stay or with your childs, we really recommend this place. Hopefully we will able to come back as soon as possible.

Review #4675381 "We wanna go back here in Maui" The Photos are accurate but do not show the hosts attention to details and how well appointed this property is. from the oysters on the grill to the Brother IZ dvds, the tiki torches, snorkels, flippers boogie-boards, clothes washer, covered parking, bicycles and on and on. The kitchen is just as well equipped, if you are a foodie..there are fruits and other local fresh ingredients for fine dinning. and what better place than at 54 Eleu pl. you have your own privet grass yard with fruit trees that you may get permission to pick ...yummy, sit in the shade under the mango tree on the patio. There is a BBQ grill with charcoal or wood, a utility sink and they can set up a party for up to fifty people. It is two blocks from the beach where the park begins with palms and a beautifully maintained lawn, tennis courts. There are rackets & balls as well at the Ohana (Cottage)... Wow! oo la la, I was really impressed. The hosts are very attentive to your needs and even made a flower Lei and hairpin for my honey when I picked her up at the airport. They gave the best information on local beaches, shopping, and sightseeing. The Cottage has a name; KanaKala, and there you will experience the true meaning of Aloha. I recommend this property for couples and small families, and perhaps mellow party types. The only down side I can mention is that if you want to sleep-in late, the many different types of birds may wake you, but I enjoy the sunrise songs. Just Relax and Have fun!! This cottage is a real gem in Kihei, a great place for exploring the whole island. It is located conveniently close to stores and wonderful beaches in a residential part of Kihei, so you can experience living among the locals, which is much better than staying in a big hotel with a hundred other guests. Here you get really personal attention from your hosts and have your privacy at the same time. The detached cottage is spacious equipped with everything you may ever need. It was nice to have all the beach and snorkeling gears. It has a nice BBQ area with a huge mango tree and other fruit trees, so you can pick your own fruits. The owners are super friendly, very generous and extremely helpful. They took us to a luau show in a big hotel nearby and gave us leis that they made themselves. They also invited us for a BBQ. The owners have the real Aloha spirit that you do not find anywhere else. For that alone, it is worth renting this cottage. We highly recommend it to everyone who seeks a unique Maui experience with the true Aloha spirit!
Owner response:It was our pleasure to host such a pleasant couple from Hungary. We love the chance to share our cultures and talk story under the mando tree. Love to meet people from all over the world, doubt if we ever travel that far, so come to us again.

This was the perfect rental for us, made even better by the friendliest and most helpful owners you could ask for. They have everything you could need: full kitchen, computer with Internet and printer, snorkel equipment, coolers and ice packs, beach chairs and towels, boogie boards, a washer and line, even aloe in the fridge! Friendly and helpful, a quiet residential setting just off the main strip, minutes from the beach, and fully stocked for adventures. What more could you want? (Besides more cooperative weather :) ) However, we did notice board games, DVDs, cable, and books for those rainy days.
Owner response:If the weather was better and we had more time you could have taken out the bicycles for a ride. We especially love to BBQ, which we didn't get to do, so remember us on your next trip to Maui. Please do mention, that you are a returning, as we treat these guest with something special.

What to say? Everything about our stay at Hale Kanakala was nothing short of magnificent! We spent Christmas and New Year's at the cottage and enjoyed every moment of it. The cottage was very clean upon arrival and had everything we could possibly need for our stay, from cooking to going to the beach. Sarah and Dan provided us with beach mats, coolers, snorkeling gear, boogie boards, and beach chairs. There were also bikes available for us to use. Not only did we have everything in our cottage, but Sarah and Dan were so helpful and sweet, and we are definitely going home with new friends. They had us over for dinner and to play cards on multiple occasions and we cooked for them as well. They told us all of the must-dos and gave us tips about the best beaches, restaurants and places to get groceries. We were also picked up at the airport by Sarah because we didn't have our rental car yet, and she was so kind as to take us to grab a few groceries before bringing us to the cottage. When we come back to Hawaii, we will most definitely stay here and we will be recommending it to all of our friends and family! And one other fun thing is they taught us how to make sushi! :)

Cozy, comfortable, convenient and clean are some of the words that come to mind in describing Hale KaneKale. Everything you could possibly need is provided, and it also offers a true Hawaiian experience! The decor and ambiance are great. Sara and Dan are the best, and it was a pleasure to spend time with them. We also enjoyed visiting with Sarah’s mom, Josie, a 5th generation Hawaiian. Their suggestions were invaluable, but they were certainly not intrusive. We are senior citizens, and I am slightly handicapped. We found the cottage very accessible, and had no problems. It suited us perfectly, and we are glad to heartily recommend it to you! By the way, the oranges on their tree outside the cottage are the sweetest you will ever find!

There is not a lot to add to the last comments, especially Karlo's one describes exactly what you can expect at Hale Kanakala (House of Sarah and Dan). It's a beautiful cottage, close to the beach but also with easy access to trips like to Haleakala. Besides all the stuff that we were allowed to use (beach mats, snorkeling sets, bodyboards...), it's also important to mention how hospitable Sarah&Dan are. They help you with everything, give you advices if you like and also lots of coupons for activities, shopping and so on. We recommend this cottage to everyone that prefers to stay in a private condo rather than in a luxury hotel, and therefore pays less to get more aloha spirit. Enjoy!

We stayed in Hale Kanakala for a week in July, 2010. If you're coming to Maui looking for $350 a night ocean views and maid service in a luxury condo or hotel, this is not the place for you. But if you're looking for remakable value in clean, comfortable, secure accommodation, this is it. The Hale is in Dan and Sara's back yard, far enough from the house to be completely separate and private, but close enough for easy and friendly communication. The yard provides a nice lawn area, a picnic table, a barbecue, and fruit trees, including a mango tree that provides fine breakfast fare. There's a covered carport and a separate laundry area. The cottage is ready for you to move right in and start being a Maui resident immediately. The kitchen is well-equipped, there are lots of towels, there's a big-screen TV and DVD, and there's a computer linked to fast internet service. Just as important, there's a lot of recreational gear for you to use, including masks and snorkels, boogie boards, coolers, and beach equipment. There's air-con in the bedroom, but because the house is breezy and has two big ceiling fans, even with summer temperatures of 88 degrees, we rarely turned on the A/C. Because the house is in a neighborhood, you might hear distant roosters and the occasional dog, or children playing, but during our stay, we enjoyed peace and quiet, and uninterrupted sleep on the comfortable king bed. Unlike a hotel or condo, you aren't at the mercy of people above, below and beside you, and you're with local hosts rather than random tourists and paid employees. The location is extremely convenient. Within four blocks you have a beach park, Longs Drugs, several restaurants, and several shopping options. Sara also provides you with a discount card for Foodland, which saves a lot of money on groceries and beverages. If you're a traveler on a modest budget who is looking for great value in a home base on Maui, Hale Kanakala is exactly what you're after. It's the kind of place you want to leave even nicer than you found it, out of appreciation to your hosts.

Our stay at Dan and Sara's cottage was an absolute delight. To stay in the company of such a warm and loving Hawaiian family was a chance to experience the real Hawai'i. Far from the 'madding crowds' in the south, the quiet cottage was equipped with everything we could possibly need and more - plush towels, comfy king-size bed, and a fresh mango hanging outside the door. In addition to being nicely outfitted, thoughtful touches above and beyond the norm include an Entertainment coupon book on the shelf and supermarket discount club cards on the cottage key ring. Dan and Sarah struck the perfect balance between allowing us privacy and being available for friendly help and interaction. And ditto to what others say about convenient location, use of coolers, beach chairs, mats, snorkel gear, etc. Sarah even invited us over to learn out to make leis (it was plumeria season), and gave us each a send-off lei as we left!

My wife and I visited Sarah and Dan in March of 2009. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel part of their ohana (family). Their hospitality was delightful and yet allowed for privacy. The cottage was far more than we could have imagined - clean, well stocked, new furnishings. Arriving two weeks after my mother died, we needed a place to rest and recover as well as celebrate our son's marriage on Ohahu in the beginning of April. At Hale KanaKala we were able to do that thanks to the wonderful hospitality of Sarah and Dan (and their extended family). Their location gives terrific access to all of the marvelous sites of Maui. We are planning a return trip this year (2010) and will definately arrange it around the availabilty of the cottage. Mahalo Sarah and Dan for making our first trip to Hawaii, and especially your beautiful island, so memorable.

This cottage is the best! We were treated like family and always felt like we had our privacy too. The bathroom is very well equipped for anyone who has limited mobility. The king bed was comfortable too. The cottage is so clean and well taken care of. Thanks for such a nice stay Sarah and Dan. We will be back! Cheryl and Gary Cooper

What a great find! The cottage is immaculate, lots of nice extra touches like DVDs, fresh fruit from the garden, use of coolers/ boogie boards. A great, quiet swimming cove is only 5 minutes away. All of the stores you could need are less than a 5 minute drive. This is the best deal in Kihei. I only wish we had taken more advantage of the home amenities like the full (very well-stocked) kitchen and barbecue area.

Sarah and Dan and their family were very hospitable and made us feel very welcome. Meeting a few of the family members and hearing their stories was truly exceptional. Because of Sarah and Dan's hospitality our honeymoon was made that much more memorable.

This was my second visit to Sarah and Dan's cottage. I visited there with great memories of the first visit. Normally, the first experience remains the best and the following experience can't easily exceed the first one. Right after I arrived at the cottage, I sensed the warmest welcome to my return. I felt like I came back to my home!! 8 days passed so fast. Upon departure, I was sure I 'll be back to this cottage soon. Thank you for the pleasant and enjoyable stay, Sarah and Dan.

Sarah and Dan's cottage is awsome!! A great retreat in a quiet neighborhood, two blocks from the beach. I will definitely come back and tell all my friends and family about this great cottage and the couple who own it, who make you feel special and comfortable. They totally respect your privacy, yet are there when you have questions with abundant helpful information!! I will definitely be back!!

We had the most wonderful experience at the cottage, and I don't know why anyone would stay anywhere else! You really can't get that kind of authentic experience and genuine hospitality at a resort (who else would throw you a BBQ?). We already miss our Maui home and will certainly be back!!

If you want to stay in "real" Hawaii, this is the place to stay. It is charming, immaculate, completely furnished, comes with your own lanai and lovely tropical landscaping. Close to the beach, shopping centers, restaurants, some within walking distance, but you will want a car to travel this most beautiful Hawaiian island. A REAL BARGAIN1111

We have stayed in a few cottages over the years and this is one of the best by far. It felt like home away from home. Dan and Sarah are very friendly without intruding and go out of their way to help you get the most out of your vacation. The Cottage is very well equiped from the kitchen to the bathrooms. The Beach is just 2 blocks away and everything you need is right there. We loved our stay and will be back very soon.
