unpleasant management + non functional features

Arriving at the beautifully situated Epicuro Gardens, we were greeted by a gruff proprietress who quickly introduced us to an array of non-functional appliances and asked for a sizable deposit. So was set the negative tone for our stay. The fireplace and TV proved unusable, as did most of the remotes to operate home heating/cooling. The master bedroom mattress was uncomfortable and old; the adjacent bedroom offerings seem sized and built for an uncomplaining tween audience. To be fair, everything seemed clean. And the large master bath proved a comfortable plus. But towels were thin and few, and the kitchen lacked such basics as salt, pepper or sugar. Had the weather been warmer, we might have enjoyed the outdoor space, pool and therefore our overall stay more. Throw in the wafting musty smell and the occasional spider and the place simply doesn't live up to its epicurean claim. It's important to note that there is *no designated parking space*, so the white-knuckle driving you do around the Amalfi coast during your stay will end with the stress of parallel parking at an unpredictable distance, before your long stair climb up to the house. The final kicker was that our deposit was returned to us as a wad of bills. Since we didnt count it on the spot, it was only upon returning to our far-away parked car that we found that the proprietress had pocketed a chunk of it (!) So much for southern Italian hospitality.
Owner response:After years of giving a happy service we are very surprised and upset that we should be sent a bad review as it is certainly not to our benefit and we do not enjoy it. We are not a hotel, but we do try to offer a good service in our villa. A holiday home or villa means that you are renting a property and at the same time responsible for it . We are not obliged to supply any food materials or household products, however, a bowl of freshly picked lemons were left on the dining room table, mineral water in the fridge, shampoo, soap and toilet paper for the minimum of one to two days were supplied, even washing liquid and dishwasher tablets plus rubbish bags etc, a fully detailed brochure with 24 hour contact numbers etc., in case o of any extra needs, services, towels or cleaning etc, and a full walk through of the villa, terraces and pool area, as it is normal routine with our English speaking Rep. The deposit was as stipulated and printed in confirmation, and this is policy here in all rented properties in case of damages, and which is signed for. April is very unpredictable and considered low season, the weather was unfortunately bad on some days, especially that of the check in, so the guests might not have been able to use the pool and garden area as much as they would have liked to, they were also away from the villa for a stop-over in another town and on day trips, however, no attempt was made to put the garden furniture in place and leave the surroundings as they found them before leaving and for this reason one would assume that is why they were in a rush during check out to leave in case any damages were discovered. As for driving on the coast, it is not an easy task for anyone unless they have some driving experience on the continent in general. When anyone comes by car then we do give indications of where they can park for free and private parking is available only with extra cost x day. In addition if there are any complaints or thoughts then they should be mentioned on the spot so they may dealt with and there are no misunderstandings or mistakes.

My family and I stayed at this beautiful villa in June 2010. The place was clean and comfortable, the view was spectacular and breathtaking. The hostess was always available and quite helpful. The villa is exactly as described - the only thing I would mention is that there are a number of stairs to get to the villa. I would recommend it as the ideal location to tour the Amalfi Coast or to stay local and enjoy Amalfi and the beautiful pool.
