Hardy's Hill House, once a turn-of-the-century boarding house, is a perfect country getaway near the sea. Set on one and a half grassy acres bordered by a stone wall and trees, the house has large airy rooms, sparkling clean, a fieldstone fireplace, newly-painted interiors and hardwood floors. There are three small decks with views of the barn and woods. Behind the house is a picnic area with a picnic table and charcoal grill. See our Hardy's Hill House website for more details and photos.
Stroll down Ferry Lane to Eggemoggin Reach to swim, sunbathe, or launch your boat. If you are interested in kayaking, Peter is a Registered Maine Guide in Sea Kayaking and he offers guided sea kayaking trips from the house. Visit antique shops, art galleries, and restaurants, play golf or tennis, explore nearby islands. Enjoy theater, music and films at Stonington's Opera House, watch the day's catch arrive at the fishing pier, or hop the mail-boat to Isle au Haut. Off-island destinations include Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, Castine, and Blue Hill.

Our family has rented this wonderful house for several years and we are eagerly looking forward to returning for a week this summer. The house is a beautifully appointed, lovingly maintained home, with lovely personal touches in every corner. The setting is both secluded on Deer Isle and, at the same time, offers convenient access to all corners of the island as well as nearby Blue Hill, Brooklin, Castine, and numerous other irresistible Maine towns, each with its unique pleasures. Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park are an easy day trip from the house. There is a magical short walk from Hardy's Hill House down to the old Ferry Landing, with enchanting vews of Eggemoggin Reach and the Deer Isle Bridge. Adjacent to that is a wonderful local land trust preserve, with beach and meadow walks. Peter and Christine Jones are gracious, thoughtful and most responsive owners, with a very obvious love for the house and this wondrous isle. It has been a great joy getting to know them over the years. But the most precious part of our time at Hardy's Hill House has been the accumulation of family memories - relaxed quiet time together, playing Scrabble, taking countless walks, beachcombing, trips to the farmer's market in Stonington, ferry rides and hikes on Isle au Haut (a gorgeous, little used part of Acadia National Park, lying off Deer Isle), lobster dinners, playing catch in the large yard, feeling wholly at home. This is Maine at its unspoiled best.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

This we be my third season visiting Hardy's Hill House and each year I look forward to it more and more. The house is in a beautiful setting with many Hiking Trails nearby and a perfect small beach right down the road. There are many things to do in the area and Stonington and Blue Hill are just a short ride and offer several restaurants and shops. The house is beautifully furnished yet very comfortable. Just sitting in the beautful backyard is a vacation in itself. The only problem is that my Golden Retriever is depressed for several days after we return home.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+.

Our family of five visited Hardy’s Hill House for a week in the summer. That week will forever remain as one of our best family vacations. We were nervous about taking our three kids (3 year old twins and a 6 year old) to a country cottage for an entire week because we thought they might get bored. We were so wrong! The kids were delighted by new adventures every day and we were sad to leave after the week flew by. The best days were spent walking down the road to the beach at Eggemoggin Reach. Every day there was a fresh supply of sea glass, shells, and sand dollars deposited on the shore for us to find. This was by far the best part of the trip for the kids. On other days we spent time visiting some of the low key island attractions like the local artist displays on the sidewalk in Stonington, Nervous Nellie’s Jams & Jellies, and other beaches. The large back yard was perfect for lazy days spent around the house. Bar Harbor is a 45 minute drive away. The house itself was perfect for the family. The kids had a great time exploring all of the rooms. The bedrooms were all very cozy. The rest of the living areas were very comfortable and even when grandparents visited there was enough space for everyone.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Brian's family was so enthusiastic and appreciative and are typical of guests who have children, dogs, appreciate simple pleasures of the outdoors in summer. We'd love to have you back!

Hardy's Hill House is a vacationer's magic Alice down the rabbit hole. As soon as you arrive you relax. The appointments of the house are casual but perfectly convenient. The open feeling in the house centering on the magnificent fireplace encourages lounging with just enough privacy or connection as guests require. The kitchen is absolutely comfortable as are the airy bedrooms. The lovely open site is refreshing and the deck takes full advantage of this.. And you are just a short drive from the facinating town or walk to the beaches. Peter and Christine are a delight to work within your reservation and for any advice you might need. I highly recommend this rental. We are repeat customers. AnaLinda and Paul.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

Why the Owner Chose Little Deer Isle:
Back in 2004 we were looking for an older, solidly-built property with character, set in the Maine countryside yet not too far from the sea. Hardy's Hill House, long ago a turn-of-the-century boarding house, seemed to us the perfect country getaway.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Located on an island where time seems to stand still; within walking distance of conservation land, a beach and the well-known sailing corridor Eggemoggin Reach; brilliant stars visible in the night; plentiful wildlife; a spacious charming house with a working fireplace; a view of sloping fields, stone walls, woods and a barn.
