Phoenix Nest, a romantic and spectacular oceanfront vacation home, is nestled on two glorious acres of forest right on the ocean.
The 2500 square foot, newly remodeled home is bright and airy and includes a 44-foot living room with windows throughout overlooking the ocean. The two master bedroom suites also have unsurpassed, sweeping views of the ocean. The house has great privacy. You can hear the waves crash and see the osprey and seagulls fly by as the low tide unveils the rocks and sandy beach. Watch gorgeous sunsets from the deck or hot tub.
You will see sea lions surfing or resting on the rocks. During their spring migration, whales often play with their calves off of the nearby peninsula. In winter, you will see them heading south to Baja.
The bluff is like a garden, covered with plants and natural wildflowers. Known as the "banana belt," nearby rivers provide a more fog-free and temperate climate than other coastal areas.

What an amazing house in an amazing location. First the location. The house is so close to the cliffs that you almost feel like you are hanging over the edge. And it's far enough away from Highway 1 that you don't hear very much road noise. The views of the Pacific Ocean sunsets were breathtaking. We just missed the whales going by, but that only means we have to go back again. We live in San Francisco and simply wanted to get away for a weekend, and Phoenix Nest was perfect. Let's just say, I had lots of jealous friends. Anchor Bay is only a 5 minute drive away if you want a quick bite at a decent Mexican place or need a grocery store. The store is mostly organic fare, so it's a little expensive. So you can drive a bit further south to Gualala or north to Point Arena. We were lazy, so we sucked it up and just went to Anchor Bay. The house was very clean and there is ample space for lounging without feeling on top of one another. The kitchen is fully stocked with all the equipment you would need including various other cooking supplies and condiments. My partner and I laughed as there are little signs everyone telling what you to do and not to do, but guess what? That's probably a very good reason why everything is in such good shape and well taken care of. The owners couldn't be any nicer or any more responsive. They provided comprehensive directions and many suggestions on what to do and where. To summarize, you really can't go wrong here. I'd recommend to anyone, especially one or two couples wanting a wonderful, scenic place to spend a little time. And as the title of my review says, "I'll be back!"
Owner response:Dear Marlon, It certainly sounds like you enjoyed your stay and took advantage of all that Phoenix Nest and the surrounding area has to offer! We are always happy to have such enthusiastic guests. My husband and I arrived at the house soon after you left, and wanted to thank you for leaving it in perfect shape. Come back soon and bring your friends! Warm regards, Pat

It's been a busy week after our return from the north coast. Your home and our stay there couldn't have been more comfortable or enjoyable. We found the home extremely comfortable, clean, and well kept. The large deck was perfect for barbecuing and star gazing in the evenings. The seals, at first, took a bit getting used to but after watching their antics in the mornings their sounds blended splendidly with the surroundings. Their were many whale sightings on their southern migration. We were also greeted by an extremely friendly calico cat who surreptitiously found her way inside briefly a couple times. We have used VRBO for many years and have always had good experiences but the Phoenix Nest is the first one we have chosen to return to. Sincerely, Lloyd and Jan
Owner response:Dear Lloyd, It sounds like you had a memorable New Year's stay at the Phoenix Nest. I'm glad the whales were running! We welcome you back soon again. Warm regards, Pat

We stayed at Phoenix Next this past October and it was truly one our best vacations. Every morning I woke up and had the decision of whether I really needed to go anywhere or just stay planted in the lounge chair taking in the view. We have traveled to CA numerous time but have always headed South of San Francisco. This was our first venture North. The thing that immediately struck me was that a lot of thought, planning, and love have gone into this house. Not wanting to be redundant, ditto on what many of the other reviews reflect. Forgot your book or Kindle? There is a well stocked library of books covering many subjects. Like taking pictures? Plenty of scenic vistas along the coastline. You think about something you forgot or would like? Guess what? It's there. Being from New Orleans, we are foodies and I found everything I needed in the kitchen to whip up some great dinners. Plenty of hiking and other activities to do outdoors along with some galleries and shopping. Definitely a restful and rejuvenating vacation spot. Thanks for sharing this special place.
Owner response:Dear Greg, High praise indeed! Please come back and take some more wonderful photos. I really enjoyed communicating with you and your wife. You are always welcome at the Phoenix Nest. Warm regards, Pat

Phoenix Nest's Top 10

Phoenix Nest’s TOP 10 – November 2011 • Peace and tranquility • Wonderful windows to observe the ocean’s ebb and flow to the last ray of light • Accommodations bar none • Trink’s Bakery and Restaurant’s ginger scones and chili (as good as mine!) • A great night’s sleep for every new dawn • A rainbow and hummingbirds on a chilly November morn • “Wi-fi” – a surprise perk to keep in touch with the world • Solitude with nature to enjoy the flora and fauna of the magnificent Mendocino coast • A gourmet kitchen with every tool necessary to create a memorable meal • Wonderfully creative yard art, especially from driftwood - a seal, a frog, a wolf howling to the moon, Madonna and child (we think!) – as well as a real “Phoenix Nest” Wonderful memories of a long weekend that was much too short! Joyce and Clark from GA
Owner response:Dear Clark and Joyce, I love your top ten list. I hope you will return and add another 10 to your list. Warmest regards, Pat

I can echo the superlatives that precede my review, but the best way to convey my total and utter delight is to say I had friends secure their reservation while I was still there! Based on my endless and effusive emails coupled with pictures I could not resist sending home, they were on the phone immediately. This place sings. It is private, comfortable and offers up a cure to whatever pressures you bring with you. When we could tear ourselves away from the tranquil surroundings and dazzling views, we drove into the mountains to hug a redwood or two. We stocked up at Whole Foods in San Francisco but the grocery stores in Gualala and Anchor Bay had everything we needed to whip up great meals in that well stocked kitchen. The beds and sofas were very comfortable. It is no wonder that environmental consciousness starts in California...what an environment! Pat and Sid truly care about this home and seem to take great joy in offering its grandeur to those of us lucky enough to discover this gem. Pat is relaxed, responsive and so kind. I could work up a horrible jealousy but she is just so great...it couldn't belong to a nicer person. We are planning our return. I'm addicted to this enchanted place!
Owner response:You are always welcome at the Phoenix Nest! Your comments echo the feelings we have for this very special and unique spot. Thanks for the wonderful photos and for your words of praise. I hope to have you as our guests again soon! Pat

5 stars This home is even more lovely than the photos show. The owner wonderful to work with. The ocean view unprecedented. we loved the hot tub and the stars and the milky way. The neighbors go unseen. We spent 3 days touring the Mendocino area wineries on the search for the perfect Pinot Noir (try Lula in Ukiah ) winding our way for the afternoon over Mountain View road, in our rented Mustang. A lovely vacation from a couple from Michigan, Kathy and Tom
Owner response:Dear Kathy and Tom, I'm glad your stay at the Phoenix Nest exceeded your high expectations. It sounds like you took maximum advantage of your week on the northern California coast. I hope you'll be back soon again! Warmest regards, Pat

We now understand why Phoenix Nest gets such rave reviews. We have rented homes in the Sea Ranch and Gualala area, but this house was by far the best. It was actually more spacious and spectacular than we expected. Welcoming champagne, kitchen equipped for a chef, luxurious beds, wildlife viewing, and the ocean view of the century. The hot tub overlooking the ocean was the icing on the cake. We celebrated our anniversary there and loved every minute. We agree with previous reviewers that the owner, Pat, makes the whole experience perfect. She is attentive and responsive, but gives you complete privacy. Every detail is well thought out. As soon as we returned home, we reserved dates for next summer. Thank you, Pat, for sharing your oasis!
Owner response:Dear Bart, Thanks for the rave review. I agree the pictures on the web don't tell the whole story. You just have to experience the Phoenix Nest. I'm glad that you and Ann are repeat renters. Warm regards, Pat

Phoenix Nest is a spacious, well-appointed home perched on the edge of a cliff offering a breathtaking view. So far so good. But it gets better. The home owner, as stated on previous reviews, really is a joy to work with; caring, extremely organized and likeable. My only suggestion to potential renters would be to leave your friends and family at home. Seriously, Phoenix Nest is far too romantic and serene to share with a group
Owner response:Dear Rick, You and Melinda make my work a joy. It's a pleasure to share our home with people who are so appreciative of what we have to offer. I have to agree with you, my husband and I prefer staying at Phoenix Nest by ourselves. It continues to be our favorite sanctuary! I'm so happy you've already booked your next stay with us. Warm regards, Pat

This beautiful home on the cliffs above the ocean with its comfortable amenities was the perfect setting for us. Everything was meticulously prepared for our arrival, clean, inviting and just like in the photos. We felt like we were staying at a friend's place. Pat accompanied me in the renting process and did not tire of all my questions. She even found a generous solution to a mistake that we made and was understanding of our needs. The hot tub was Karin and Simon's star attraction. The peace and quiet, as well as the sound of the sea lions barking their gay calls, were just what we were looking forward to. We took extended hikes including Bowling Ball Beach, Salt Point State Park and the Gualala Point. We would recommend having breakfast or dinner at the Sea Ranch Lodge just 1/2 an hour south.
Owner response:Dear Charlene, Thanks for your many kind words. I'm very happy you had a great time. We invite you to return to The Phoenix Nest again soon! Best, Pat

I've never felt more comfortable in someone else's home than I felt at Phoenix Nest. The layout was great, and the views were top-notch. We loved the small town feel of Gualala and Anchor Bay. We took side trips to Point Arena Lighthouse, Bowling Ball Beach, Shell Beach, and other small beaches. In town we ate at Bones Roadhouse, Sea Sprite, and had a real nice dinner at St Orres. We also utilized the great kitchen. Our real reason for staying here, was to get away from it all. The fact that we could only hear the waves, the sea lions, no traffic, and no cell phones, fit the bill to a Tee! We stayed a week, but that truly wasn't enough time to relax and take in the surroundings. But it was a great start. We took great photos of the area that we would love to share. We want to thank you Pat for all your information and opening your home. We can tell you truly love the area. We plan on returning again and again.
Owner response:Dear Erik and Jeri, It sounds like you took advantage of all the main attractions! I'm very happy that you enjoyed our home and the region so much. Please plan to return as our guests sometime soon. Warm regards, Pat
