A fabulous, relaxing place with one of the best views on the west coast. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to get away, disconnect, unwind, and simply enjoy "being." This was a perfect place to spend a honeymoon and is on our "to visit again" list.
Owner response:Dear Honeymooners, It sounds like your visit was all that you hoped it would be. I'm so pleased that you chose the Phoenix Nest for your honeymoon and hope that you will make it a getaway destination for future anniversaries. Thanks so much for your enthusiastic review. Warm regards, Pat

We found this home to be exactly as advertized by the owner and as reviewed by other guests. A perfect spot for a peaceful vacation retreat. We also appreciated the accessibility of the home which allowed us to bring our son who is in a wheel chair. We loved the experience. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Owner response:Dear Glen, It was our pleasure to have the three of you visit our beautiful coast. I'm glad your son enjoyed himself. I hope you return as our guests again. We await your next visit. Best regards, Pat

What an amazing house in an amazing location. First the location. The house is so close to the cliffs that you almost feel like you are hanging over the edge. And it's far enough away from Highway 1 that you don't hear very much road noise. The views of the Pacific Ocean sunsets were breathtaking. We just missed the whales going by, but that only means we have to go back again. We live in San Francisco and simply wanted to get away for a weekend, and Phoenix Nest was perfect. Let's just say, I had lots of jealous friends. Anchor Bay is only a 5 minute drive away if you want a quick bite at a decent Mexican place or need a grocery store. The store is mostly organic fare, so it's a little expensive. So you can drive a bit further south to Gualala or north to Point Arena. We were lazy, so we sucked it up and just went to Anchor Bay. The house was very clean and there is ample space for lounging without feeling on top of one another. The kitchen is fully stocked with all the equipment you would need including various other cooking supplies and condiments. My partner and I laughed as there are little signs everyone telling what you to do and not to do, but guess what? That's probably a very good reason why everything is in such good shape and well taken care of. The owners couldn't be any nicer or any more responsive. They provided comprehensive directions and many suggestions on what to do and where. To summarize, you really can't go wrong here. I'd recommend to anyone, especially one or two couples wanting a wonderful, scenic place to spend a little time. And as the title of my review says, "I'll be back!"
Owner response:Dear Marlon, It certainly sounds like you enjoyed your stay and took advantage of all that Phoenix Nest and the surrounding area has to offer! We are always happy to have such enthusiastic guests. My husband and I arrived at the house soon after you left, and wanted to thank you for leaving it in perfect shape. Come back soon and bring your friends! Warm regards, Pat

It's been a busy week after our return from the north coast. Your home and our stay there couldn't have been more comfortable or enjoyable. We found the home extremely comfortable, clean, and well kept. The large deck was perfect for barbecuing and star gazing in the evenings. The seals, at first, took a bit getting used to but after watching their antics in the mornings their sounds blended splendidly with the surroundings. Their were many whale sightings on their southern migration. We were also greeted by an extremely friendly calico cat who surreptitiously found her way inside briefly a couple times. We have used VRBO for many years and have always had good experiences but the Phoenix Nest is the first one we have chosen to return to. Sincerely, Lloyd and Jan
Owner response:Dear Lloyd, It sounds like you had a memorable New Year's stay at the Phoenix Nest. I'm glad the whales were running! We welcome you back soon again. Warm regards, Pat

Phoenix Nest’s TOP 10 – November 2011 • Peace and tranquility • Wonderful windows to observe the ocean’s ebb and flow to the last ray of light • Accommodations bar none • Trink’s Bakery and Restaurant’s ginger scones and chili (as good as mine!) • A great night’s sleep for every new dawn • A rainbow and hummingbirds on a chilly November morn • “Wi-fi” – a surprise perk to keep in touch with the world • Solitude with nature to enjoy the flora and fauna of the magnificent Mendocino coast • A gourmet kitchen with every tool necessary to create a memorable meal • Wonderfully creative yard art, especially from driftwood - a seal, a frog, a wolf howling to the moon, Madonna and child (we think!) – as well as a real “Phoenix Nest” Wonderful memories of a long weekend that was much too short! Joyce and Clark from GA
Owner response:Dear Clark and Joyce, I love your top ten list. I hope you will return and add another 10 to your list. Warmest regards, Pat

We stayed at Phoenix Next this past October and it was truly one our best vacations. Every morning I woke up and had the decision of whether I really needed to go anywhere or just stay planted in the lounge chair taking in the view. We have traveled to CA numerous time but have always headed South of San Francisco. This was our first venture North. The thing that immediately struck me was that a lot of thought, planning, and love have gone into this house. Not wanting to be redundant, ditto on what many of the other reviews reflect. Forgot your book or Kindle? There is a well stocked library of books covering many subjects. Like taking pictures? Plenty of scenic vistas along the coastline. You think about something you forgot or would like? Guess what? It's there. Being from New Orleans, we are foodies and I found everything I needed in the kitchen to whip up some great dinners. Plenty of hiking and other activities to do outdoors along with some galleries and shopping. Definitely a restful and rejuvenating vacation spot. Thanks for sharing this special place.
Owner response:Dear Greg, High praise indeed! Please come back and take some more wonderful photos. I really enjoyed communicating with you and your wife. You are always welcome at the Phoenix Nest. Warm regards, Pat

I can echo the superlatives that precede my review, but the best way to convey my total and utter delight is to say I had friends secure their reservation while I was still there! Based on my endless and effusive emails coupled with pictures I could not resist sending home, they were on the phone immediately. This place sings. It is private, comfortable and offers up a cure to whatever pressures you bring with you. When we could tear ourselves away from the tranquil surroundings and dazzling views, we drove into the mountains to hug a redwood or two. We stocked up at Whole Foods in San Francisco but the grocery stores in Gualala and Anchor Bay had everything we needed to whip up great meals in that well stocked kitchen. The beds and sofas were very comfortable. It is no wonder that environmental consciousness starts in California...what an environment! Pat and Sid truly care about this home and seem to take great joy in offering its grandeur to those of us lucky enough to discover this gem. Pat is relaxed, responsive and so kind. I could work up a horrible jealousy but she is just so great...it couldn't belong to a nicer person. We are planning our return. I'm addicted to this enchanted place!
Owner response:You are always welcome at the Phoenix Nest! Your comments echo the feelings we have for this very special and unique spot. Thanks for the wonderful photos and for your words of praise. I hope to have you as our guests again soon! Pat

5 stars This home is even more lovely than the photos show. The owner wonderful to work with. The ocean view unprecedented. we loved the hot tub and the stars and the milky way. The neighbors go unseen. We spent 3 days touring the Mendocino area wineries on the search for the perfect Pinot Noir (try Lula in Ukiah ) winding our way for the afternoon over Mountain View road, in our rented Mustang. A lovely vacation from a couple from Michigan, Kathy and Tom
Owner response:Dear Kathy and Tom, I'm glad your stay at the Phoenix Nest exceeded your high expectations. It sounds like you took maximum advantage of your week on the northern California coast. I hope you'll be back soon again! Warmest regards, Pat

We now understand why Phoenix Nest gets such rave reviews. We have rented homes in the Sea Ranch and Gualala area, but this house was by far the best. It was actually more spacious and spectacular than we expected. Welcoming champagne, kitchen equipped for a chef, luxurious beds, wildlife viewing, and the ocean view of the century. The hot tub overlooking the ocean was the icing on the cake. We celebrated our anniversary there and loved every minute. We agree with previous reviewers that the owner, Pat, makes the whole experience perfect. She is attentive and responsive, but gives you complete privacy. Every detail is well thought out. As soon as we returned home, we reserved dates for next summer. Thank you, Pat, for sharing your oasis!
Owner response:Dear Bart, Thanks for the rave review. I agree the pictures on the web don't tell the whole story. You just have to experience the Phoenix Nest. I'm glad that you and Ann are repeat renters. Warm regards, Pat

Phoenix Nest is a spacious, well-appointed home perched on the edge of a cliff offering a breathtaking view. So far so good. But it gets better. The home owner, as stated on previous reviews, really is a joy to work with; caring, extremely organized and likeable. My only suggestion to potential renters would be to leave your friends and family at home. Seriously, Phoenix Nest is far too romantic and serene to share with a group
Owner response:Dear Rick, You and Melinda make my work a joy. It's a pleasure to share our home with people who are so appreciative of what we have to offer. I have to agree with you, my husband and I prefer staying at Phoenix Nest by ourselves. It continues to be our favorite sanctuary! I'm so happy you've already booked your next stay with us. I've never felt more comfortable in someone else's home than I felt at Phoenix Nest. The layout was great, and the views were top-notch. We loved the small town feel of Gualala and Anchor Bay. We took side trips to Point Arena Lighthouse, Bowling Ball Beach, Shell Beach, and other small beaches. In town we ate at Bones Roadhouse, Sea Sprite, and had a real nice dinner at St Orres. We also utilized the great kitchen. Our real reason for staying here, was to get away from it all. The fact that we could only hear the waves, the sea lions, no traffic, and no cell phones, fit the bill to a Tee! We stayed a week, but that truly wasn't enough time to relax and take in the surroundings. But it was a great start. We took great photos of the area that we would love to share. We want to thank you Pat for all your information and opening your home. We can tell you truly love the area. We plan on returning again and again.
Owner response:Dear Erik and Jeri, It sounds like you took advantage of all the main attractions! I'm very happy that you enjoyed our home and the region so much. Please plan to return as our guests sometime soon. Warm regards, Pat

WOW - so much more than we expected. Our stay at Phoenix Nest was awesome. From the minute we drove up the driveway, we knew we had found our Xanadu. The pictures on this website do not do justice to your beach house. You can tell that alot of TLC went into the decorating - from the gourmet kitchen (complete with everything you could need - including spices) to the sitting area in the living room overlooking the ocean. My husband being a sport fisherman loved your fish art & sculptures. During our stay, my husband and I soaked up all the area had to offer - climbing the light house at Pt Arena (awesome view of the area); beach combing, hiking in the Gualala Redwoods & swimming the river, chowing down at Bones Roadhouse, wine & beer tasting (Ft. Bragg). But our most favorite was just relaxing on the deck overlooking the ocean. One night we BBQ'd fresh king salmon and Pacific oysters and ate outside under the stars. We Hiked to Havens Neck and watched the sunset - got some beautiful pictures. Awaking to the sounds of seals barking and then while having our morning coffee, watching deer graze in the front yard...........hmmmmmmm - wish I was there right nowl
Owner response:Dear Clare and Chuck, I take your review as high praise considering you also live in a gorgeous part of California (Santa Barbara). It sounds like you really took advantage of your brief time at our home. Hopefully, next time you'll come up for a week or so. Thanks again for your inspired review. I am at the house now watching whales and their calves swim north. See you soon again, I hope. Warm regards, Pat

Looking for a Anniversary get away and couldn't have found anything better. When we first arrived we thought what a fun spot to come with friends, but after a day we thought we'd just keep this treasure to ourselves. The pictures start the story, but can't begin to capture being there.
Owner response:I thank your for your sentiments. I also feel the same when I come to Phoenix Nest, even after 38 years. It is a magical, glorious place to contemplate, read, listen to birds and watch our natural world from a front-row seat. Please be our guests again! Warmest regards, Pat

i searched long and hard for a place that had spectacular views from both bedrooms as well as every other room in the house. My wife, daughter, soninlaw and i had a wonderful weekend celebrating my 60th birthday. the moon shown on the bay below as we relaxed in the hot tub. sea lions greeted us each morning. and flocks of pelicans swooped by the windows in the living room. the weather was really beautiful. you will not find a better place on the coast. drive up from bodega is beautiful and coming home through anderson valley was too. lots of little towns to stop and explore. very cool lighthouse close by that you can climb up to the top of. it's great for exploring or just staying in. i was perfectly happy to be on the couch and just watch the ocean...kitchen is very well equipped as well...thanks for opening your house for the rest of us to enjoy.
Owner response:Dear Pat, It sounds like you really took advantage of the wonderful side trips that are available along the coast and in the wine country of the Anderson Valley. I'm glad that you found our home well-equipped and comfortable. We really strive to make our guests happy. We look forward to your next visit. Warm regards, Pat K.

This beautiful home on the cliffs above the ocean with its comfortable amenities was the perfect setting for us. Everything was meticulously prepared for our arrival, clean, inviting and just like in the photos. We felt like we were staying at a friend's place. Pat accompanied me in the renting process and did not tire of all my questions. She even found a generous solution to a mistake that we made and was understanding of our needs. The hot tub was Karin and Simon's star attraction. The peace and quiet, as well as the sound of the sea lions barking their gay calls, were just what we were looking forward to. We took extended hikes including Bowling Ball Beach, Salt Point State Park and the Gualala Point. We would recommend having breakfast or dinner at the Sea Ranch Lodge just 1/2 an hour south.
Owner response:Dear Charlene, Thanks for your many kind words. I'm very happy you had a great time. We invite you to return to The Phoenix Nest again soon! Best, Pat

My husband and I recently stayed 7 nights at the Phoenix Nest and I must say this is TRULY a remarkable home. When we first opened the doors the view was literally "Jaw Dropping", from the beautiful ocean right in front of us, to the sea lions calling our name, it was fantastic. The creative Artistic Design all over the home was just beautiful. (A lot of thought went into decorating this location).. I have stayed at many homes in Sea Ranch and this is "BAR NONE" my favorite. The kitchen was well stocked, the hot tub was amazing and the ambiance was fabulous. We didn't want to leave - next time we are staying two weeks for sure. My compliments to Pat for accomidating our every need and question we had. Our plan is to continue this retreat every year moving forward, we are so glad we found this special destination. Thanks again Pat Kelley & Bill

Where do two people who were childhood sweethearts and reconnected again after almost 30 years, go to finally marry each other? The most perfect place in the world: Phoenix Nest!! Jay and I cannot say enough about our experience at this perfect and beautiful place. We have visited this area before and stayed in Gualala, but finding Phoenix Nest was a dream come true! The home itself is perfect comfort and has everything you would need and more to feel at home. And the view?....well let's just say that there are no other properties in the area that can compare. You can tell that this family considers this home a special place...and we are all very lucky that they are willing to share it with others. From the beautiful view from the back deck of crashing waves and wheeling sea birds to the glorious hot tub under the stars to the wonderfully equipped kitchen and the more than comfortable bed we couldn't have asked for more! Our ceremony in front of the picture windows in the living room gave us a backdrop of beautiful ocean to make our pictures even more memorable. We couldn't help but keep being drawn to the back deck and the windows to gaze out at the beautiful ocean every chance we could get...and we fell asleep and woke to the sound of the sea lions down on Haven's Neck beach. Everything was perfect and we just want to thank Pat so much for giving us the memory of a lifetime. Jay and I waited many years before we could finally get married like we dreamed about doing when we were kids and first fell in love....and there is no more romantic spot that we could have found to do it! So if you are looking for a place to make your wedding or honeymoon the most memorable and wonderful one that you can....then please take our word for it and visit this very special place. We will definitely be returning to celebrate our anniversaries...in fact I can't stand the idea of never staying at Phoenix Nest again...so I guarantee we will be back!! Jay and Cheri Fillmore
Owner response:Dear Cheri and Jay, I've got goosebumps reading about your wedding. I'm very honored that you chose the Phoenix Nest for your once in a lifetime event. Thanks for the glowing review of our home. We really do aim to please and we are delighted that you appreciated the home and spectacular region as we do. My best friend and I spent a week at Phoenix Nest hoping for rest and relaxation from the stress of our jobs. What we experienced was absolute peace in this beautiful home with spectacular views from every room in the house! As guests of Phoenix Nest, we were provided access to a private cove (Haven’s Neck) that satisfied our sense of adventure as we traversed the rugged terrain to photograph sea lions basking in the sun and frolicking in the water. After a day of hiking, it was absolutely glorious to relax in the hot tub and enjoy the panoramic view of the Pacific. Making the arrangements with Pat was seamless as she was responsive to our questions before the trip and checked in with us to make sure everything was as expected. It was, in fact, above and beyond anything we imagined. Phoenix Nest is a place we will visit as often as possible!
Owner response:Dear Suzie and Dina, Thanks for your wonderful review! I'm glad the rain did not slow you down. It sounds as if you took advantage of all the splendors of the Phoenix Nest. Please be our guests soon again. Pat

This is my 3rd stay at Phoenix Nest and by far one of the best. I brought 3 newbies to Northern California with me on this trip and as usual their initial comments make it all worthwhile. If you are looking for total relaxation, gorgeous hikes, well appointed amenities, and an environment that makes you forget what you do for a living, then this is the spot for you. On this trip I brought two gourmet chefs who were amazed at how well the kitchen was stocked right down to a full spice drawer. The bedrooms are super comfy with great views, as well. There is a hot tub right off the master bedroom that makes for great sunsets. I highly recommend this vacation get away.

My three sisters and I have been visiting Phoenix Nest for nine years. They say it is my greatest find. I agree. We grocery shop before we arrive so we can spend every minute on the deck or in the living room enjoying the view and looking for wildlife. We have seen whales, Orcas, sea lions, dolphins, deer, falcons, hawks, phoebes, and winter wrens. The turkey vultures, ravens, and gulls fly by at eye level. At night it's great to sit in the hot tub and look at millions of stars and listen to the surf and sea lions. During our last visit the full moon made the wild storm surf sparkle silver. When the sun rose in the red morning sky, the surf turned pink on the gray-green sea, and a full rainbow anchored itself right on the rocks out front. Amazing. Phoenix Nest is beautifully furnished with everything you need, even Wi-Fi (if you need that). There are spectacular views from every window. Binoculars are provided for closer looks. We have ventured out to nearby beaches, to visit Fort Ross and the Pt. Arena Lighthouse, and to have dinner at St. Orres in Gualala. But we really just like to stay put at Phoenix Nest and enjoy all it has to offer. Phoenix Nest is great for two couples, four girlfriends, or four sisters. The booking process is easy and friendly. The property is wheelchair accessible, so even though we don't need that accommodation now, we are happy it is there if one of us should ever need it. We are already planning our next visit.
Owner response:Coming from a family of six sisters, I know the importance of finding a special place to share memories. I'm so pleased and honored that you have chosen the Phoenix Nest as your sanctuary. I do think the house provides a spectacular view of bird and marine mammal life. I saw a Pileated Woodpecker in the yard the other day. Oh, and a Townsend's Warbler. Come back soon, Terry and sisters. You are always welcome! Warmly, Pat

Cody is a CPA and every January we take off for a weekend somewhere on the coast of California of R&R before tax season. This was by far the most beautiful home and setting that we have ever been to. Two days and nights was too short! Wonderful kitchen, complete privacy, views from every room that are breath taking, top shelf linens and bedding and the hot tub that sits cliffside so you feel you are at the lip of the ocean. Short drive to a beach up north for a hike, but other than that we remained at Phoenixs Nest basking in its luxurious relaxation. Hope it will be available same time next year.
Owner response:Dear Kim, It's so rewarding to read glowing reviews such as yours. You and Cody obviously needed a rest and came to the right place. I hope you'll be our guests every January and perhaps after April again! Best regards, Pat

The property was awesome, immaculate, and creatively decorated. It was suppplied with all the amenities you could want . The hot tub was sensuous, on the deck, you could see the stars and hear the harbor seals barking in the distance. The house layout was wonderful, two full floors of living space, comfortable placs to sit, lay and sleep. The energy of the area was healing and nourishing to say the least. I would absolutely return.

My husband and I were hoping for a relaxing, romantic get-away after a hectic Christmas with family. We found it, and more, at your beautiful oceanside home. From the moment we walked in the door we were thrilled with the views and perfect appointments of your home. Looking through your "Before/After" photo album of the house renovation let my husband and I truly feel how important this property is to you. We so enjoyed a stormy visit to Haven's Head and watching the sea lions frolic on the beach below. We had the fortune of being there during a rainy couple of days and experienced spectacular rainbows and clouds. Your home was so very comfortable with the beautiful dishes, comforters, wall art, and satellite television. We couldn't have asked for anything more. I hope we can make this our regular retreat. Thanks so much, Pat, for letting my husband and I start our New Year out right!

The property was better than expected. Good condition, privacy, lots of exploring in the area. Wildlife: sea lions on the beach and in the waters below, flocks of egrets, deer, open spaces. It was a unique experience to spend the winter holidays in such an exclusive setting. Hard to capture with words. The owners were cooperative and thoughtful; really nice people. Recommended highly. Might stay longer next time.

This is the best view from anywhere. Plenty of privacy, no road noise, and clean as a whistle. You don't need the heater, even on cold nights, because you'll want to open the windows and continue the views with a feast of crashing waves for your ears. And the bedding includes many layers of down blankets to snuggle up in while dreaming about nature. Great seal play to look at from the many windows. Being close to Gualala means you are close to the largest selection of stores and restaurants and shops anywhere on the coast north of SF. The rental comes with deeded access to Haven's Neck, a conserved piece of headland only accessible to the 20 homeowners in the area. You will regain a respect for nature and realize how futile and silly it is to think of ourselves as so special as we do. Clearly, the ocean and coast supercedes any egos, even highly developed ones. You may drive up from the airport thinking you are God's gift to mankind, but you will drive back to the airport understanding that you're not even close after experiencing the power of the Mendonoma coast.
Owner response:Dear Max, I think that being humbled by nature is a pretty extraordinary and rare experience these days. I agree with you that this unique northern CA coast is magical and our home provides one with a front row seat of nature's beauty and force. Please come back and enjoy such magic again soon. The moment we arrived at Phoenix Nest and watched the sun set into the seemingly endless ocean, I knew this would indeed be a special birthday celebration. Even though we've lived in California for many years and been on the coast countless times, this vaulted haven above the crashing waves provided a uniquely intimate and beautiful experience. We wanted for nothing. We were filled with the beauty of nature while relaxing in complete comfort and privacy. We lounged on the deck drinking wine while looking at the stars with no competition from city lights or city noises. The hot tub provided another pleasurable, convenient place to enjoy the outdoors all by ourselves. We left the windows open at night to hear the crashing waves as well as the blinds so we could see the expanse of ocean before getting out of bed in the morning. The entire house is filled with large windows, most of which give yet another view of the ocean. Grocery stores and restaurants are but a few miles drive. We especially enjoyed Bones Roadhouse in Gualala and Mariachis in Anchor Bay. The kitchen was as advertised: well stocked. The entire house was impeccably clean and tastefully furnished. The walk from the house to the private marine reserve was pleasant and easy. Thanks, Pat, for sharing your beautiful home and making sure we had absolutely everything we needed and then some. One small disappointment was in hearing the sea lions and not being able to find them!
Owner response:Well birthday girl, I will personally guide you to the sea lions next visit!! Thanks for the glowing report. I hope you'll make this an annual tradition! Best, Pat

We arrived at this oceanfront home after dark, and awakened to some of the most beautiful views we've ever seen! There are no bad views in this home, and it makes you never want to leave!! This home is well-cared for, and very clean. We slept each night with the windows open, and heard the waves crashing against the rocks below. So peaceful! We woke every morning to see the sea lions on the adjacent beach, and got to walk to Haven's Neck to get a closer look at them. Such a great experience!! We feel so blessed to stay in such a lovely home to see this special part of God's creation. Thank you Pat for sharing your home with us.
Owner response:Dear Johnna, There's nothing better than waking up to the sound and sight of the ocean. I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay and I hope you'll make this an annual peregrination! Best, Pat

When we looked at Phoenix Nest online and decided to vacation there, we were hoping that it was really as nice as was pictured and every stated previously. It was not just as nice, it blew our mind how beautiful it really was. The first day we arrived, I rememeber sitting in the hot tub with the sights of a whale right in front of us. The smelss and feeling of the cool ocean mist is something that will be forever imprinted in my mind. We spent a day over watching the Sea Lions basking in the sun, and were amazed at how mammoth Elephant seals are. This is a place I would definitely suggest to anyone who has a stressful job as you will love the feeling of being secluded and just spending time with that someone special. It is also a nature lovers dream vacation. Pat, we would like to thank you for being the most gracious host we have ever had the opportunity to deal with and we look forward to seeing you again soon.
Owner response:Dear Kim and Jessica You describe my feelings when I stay at the Phoenix Nest!! I'm so pleased that you enjoyed all that nature has generously offered up along our stretch of the Northern California coast. We hope you will make this your west coast destination and relaxation center! Come back soon. Pat

Idyllic: Peaceful, calm, tranquil, restful, serenely beautiful, untroubled, happy, heavenly. Such are the synonyms of a word that for me describes Phoenix Nest. Mythology has the Phoenix frequently being reborn. This beautiful vacation spot is aptly named as I always feel renewed and reborn after a brief stay. I have been coming to Phoenix Nest for about 10 years. It never fails to instill a beautiful sense of peace. I have visited a host of vacation homes and B&B's over the years, but this is by far, my favorite and the one I prefer over all others. The generous and well placed windows invite light and a breathtaking view into the home and make one feel as if they were relaxing on the bluff, overlooking the sea. The owner and hostess, Pat, is delightful and quickly makes you feel like you are staying in the home of a close friend. The remodeled Kitchen is a real pleasure to use. The home is extremely comfortable, has an unique, open feel to it, and is insightfully decorated. Highlights are many, and might include a quiet evening barbeque on the deck while watching Venus appear on the horizon over a calm sea, a midday stroll along the privately owned peninsula or a relaxing, romantic hot tub at night, while taking in the awe of the milky-way directly overhead, and hearing the crash of the surf below. My wife and I kept looking at each other with smiles of awe and gratitude for the beauty that surrounded us. Thank you Pat for sharing your amazing, breathtaking home!!!
Owner response:Dear Kent and Rhonda, You express what I adore about the Phoenix Nest. I'm pleased that our home has had over the years the same impact on you that it has for us. Thank you so much for your many kind and appreciative words. Warm regards, Pat

We had a wonderful honeymoon! The house is well equipped with everything you would need for a stay at Phoenix Nest (and incredibly good taste in decor and home items :D). We loved the scenery and the weather was great! We're from St. Louis, so the cool weather and non-humid air was quite a blessing!!! The house sits on a spectacular bluff and the hot tub location is perfect for enjoying the ocean and relaxing all at the same time. We felt well taken care of and can't wait to go back!!! It's definitely a great place to go if you're looking for a romantic place to get away too. THANK YOU PAT!!!
Owner response:Thank you so much for choosing our home for your honeymoon. We hope you'll return annually to renew your vows! Warm regards, Pat

The perfect combination of ocean air, crashing waves and a chorus of sea lion music ( even thought their range of octaves is limited ) lulls you into a tranquil sleep and is there to refresh you again in the morning. We saw no more dramatic view on our journey up and down the California coast and found no more relaxing oasis than the Phoenix Nest. A TEN in every respect!

Warning…this is a long and “gushing” review of the Phoenix Nest vacation home in Gualala, CA. I just got back from my wonderful getaway there and I’m still “in the zone.” In the 90’s my writing partner and I were fortunate to find the Phoenix Nest to use as a sanctuary to finish the last chapters of a computer book project. The exterior of the home offered no clues to what was inside. Unlocking the door, we walked through a galley kitchen into the living room, where our jaws literally dropped at the panorama of the Pacific Ocean pressing in through the floor-to-ceiling windows. We couldn’t believe our good fortune to be sequestered here. In the years since, my dear husband, Cordell, has heard, often, about the sanctuary writing experience and watched my eyes roll back in my head with each re-telling. When my landmark birthday approached, he suggested we find out if “that” Phoenix Nest was still around. It was. We learned of 2007 renovations--more comfort (lots of sofas), modernized kitchen, more amenities, separate driveway & path for wheel chairs—AND a new hot tub. I prayed the deck outside the 1st floor bedroom was still there. It was. From this deck I had watched osprey, pelicans and seagulls perfect their Blue Angel maneuvers; and been hypnotized by the sun slowly lying down on the ocean. We contacted the delightful owner, Pat; got the keys, and packed the two most important things: food and music. I was thrilled that Cordell experienced the same dramatic, initial impact entering the home as I had many years earlier. Our first day of getaway was spent grinning constantly in complete satisfaction as we investigated every part of the inside and outside of the house. On the 2nd day, a spring storm began over the ocean. Horizontal layers of “blueness” stretched across the sky. 3 shades of blue in the water were visible and extended to the horizon line where smoky, planks of blue continued up into the sky. This Rothko panorama unfolded as Kenny Washington’s exquisite jazz vocal began on the stereo to Miles Davis’ “All Blues” and Oscar Brown Jr’s lyrics. “The sea / The sky / And you and I / Sea and sky and you and I / With all blues / All shades / All hues / We’re all blues” “Can you believe this is happening?” we shouted telepathically through the looks passing between us. The universe was speaking directly: “Sit down. Watch the sea and sky. Listen to Miles. Be together. Be at the Phoenix Nest.”
Owner response:Oh my!! You have had a magical moment or two at the Phoenix Nest. You express a feeling I have almost every time I walk in the door and look at the sea. I often feel I'm the luckiest woman in the world to have this home and to be able to share it with people like you. Thanks and come back soon!

We spent a lot of time on VRBO, checking out vacation rentals all up and down Cali's northern coast. After our stay at Phoenix Nest, we are sure we chose the very best one. The house is beautiful and the cliff-side location incomparable. From every window, there are breathtaking views of the ocean, the redwood forest, the cove and/or the beach. Phoenix Nest is a truly inspiring place for writers, artists, nature and wildlife lovers. We felt so blessed to see elephant seals, sea lions and osprey, along with the "usual" pelicans and other seabirds. Having access to Haven's Neck nature preserve was an added bonus. We felt quite privileged to be able to hike down and explore the wild, untouched beaches there. At the end of April, beginning of May, we enjoyed sunshine and clear, blue skies every day. The spring wind was a bit chilly, but that only made the hot tub even more inviting. We found that to be our favorite place for ocean gazing first thing in the morning, sunset-watching and star-gazing. (It wasn't bad in the middle of the day either.) We didn't go out and about much and whenever we did leave, we found ourselves wanting to just get back to the nest. . . Thank you Pat and Sid for sharing your beautiful home at the beautiful edge of the world, with us.
Owner response:Dear Kris and Mike, Thanks for choosing The Phoenix Nest. I'm hoping you'll be back very soon! Best, Pat

This is just one of those houses and locations where everything feels 'just right' and yet astounding at the same time. The location is just incredible. And the house is updated yet still unique and charming. Pat and Laurie were great to work with in making the booking and getting details worked out. It's hard to imagine anyone staying at this house and not feeling grateful at some point that the owners choose to share it as a rental. What an amazing place. And, yes, the pictures, beautiful as they are, don't do it justice. If you're on the internet searching through rental listings and trying to suss out the best one -- you can stop now and just book this one....
Owner response:Dear Dave and Kerry, I'm thrilled that you enjoyed our home and hope that you return to the Phoenix Nest soon again. You are always welcome. Best, Pat

We found the peace and serenity we were desperately needing at Phoenix Nest. Everything was perfect, from the stunning views out all windows to the quiet solitude of the nature preserve. The osprey and the sea lions made for delightful entertainment, but most of all we appreciated that we saw no other people the entire time we spent at Phoenix Nest. We've stayed in many places between Sea Ranch and Mendocino, but this is without a doubt the one we'll stay at in the future. As beautiful as the pictures are, they just can't replicate the beauty of this home. Pat and her family have done an awesome job of remodeling in order to make the most of this location. It is comfortable and relaxing, with many places to sit and enjoy the fireplace, the outside view, or just stay inside and curl up on the sofa. Highly recommended for a relaxing getaway.
Owner response:Dear Leanne, I'm glad that you got some well-deserved rest. Thanks for the wonderful descriptions of your stay at the Phoenix Nest. We await your next visit. Warmly, Pat

Everyone says this place is great, and everyone is correct! The first word that pops to mind is "comfort." The house is so tastefully decorated, with large spaces and warm colors; no pretension at all. Every corner beckons eventually, "hey, come enjoy me for a while." The ocean views on a cool day from a warm couch, with firewood crackling and the faint sound of seals barking along the distant beach, is hard to beat. And the owner is nice and easy to work with. I would totally come back to this gem.
Owner response:Dear Perrin, We are thrilled that you enjoyed your stay. Come back soon and enjoy watching the whales! Best regards, Pat

After staying at this fantastic house in July '05, we eagerly returned this week (2/1 - 2/5 2010) and had an incredible time. We were reluctant to come in Winter, but now realize that the house is a perfect retreat in any season. The 180 degree ocean views, the secluded location (only a few other homes on the cove), the persistent sound of breaking waves right below the house, as well as the persistent sound of the sea lions on the north beach at Haven's neck, the sublimely situated hot tub, the cozy newly renovated home . . . , I could go on and on. We enjoyed all of the different weather the five days packed in, from pleasant sunny mornings reading on the deck to the dramatic storm Thursday night. We can't recommend Phoenix Nest highly enough.
Owner response:Dear Jim and Jessie, Thanks for your glowing report. Few people realize that the best show in town is in our home on the couch facing the ocean during a storm. Nothing is more exciting. I'm glad you took advantage of our winter wonderland. We hope you will return soon. Warm regards, Pat

We stayed at this gorgeous home for our honeymoon in late Nov thru early Dec and absolutely loved every minute of it! The property is very well maintained and the views are spectacular. The privacy was everything we wanted and more. The surrounding towns, restaurants and citizens are all delightful and charming. There was nothing we lacked or could have wished for. We have every intention of returning many times.

We had an outstanding visit to this Gualala home. It is beautifully appointed, welcoming and comfortable, and optimally situated for a quiet, restful experience on the North Coast. The temperamental weather guarantees a very exciting visit. We had thunder and lightening one night followed by the most glorious morning sun which evaporated the moisture into dreamy mists. We felt so lucky. Can't wait to return.

Agree with some of the other comments that the photos just don't do it justice. The house is very comfortable and spacious, with a newly renovated and well-equipped kitchen. The views are spectacular, especially for watching the winter storms blow through. While we were there, we were lulled to sleep by the sea lions on the neighboring beach. We had the most relaxing and serene weekend and will definitely be coming back.

Phoenix Nest is Heaven on Earth... Soon, it will be my 5th visit to this most wonderful home. It provides everything that you could want for the perfect getaway. The Views are amazing from every room. The home is cozy, comfortable and inviting. The beds provide some of the best sleep you will ever have while listening to the sounds of the ocean. The kitchen has everything that you need including great views of the ocean and the forest that is behind the home along with deer in the yard. Each season brings something new for me to discover…it is always peaceful, private and relaxing. One of my greatest pleasures is sharing it with those that I love the most as I want them to have the same shear joy that I feel when I am here…Phoenix Nest has been the setting for some of the most wonderful memories that I will ever have and I will cherish them for all the rest of my life. I have had the privilege of getting to know Pat over the last several years and she has always been gracious and caring. It has been like becoming part of a family. Thank you so much Pat and Sid for opening your home to us. You have touched our lives in a way that words can not express. The hardest part of staying at the Phoenix Nest is leaving. I always find myself planning my next return just as I have arrived!

Beautiful, stunning home! We spent 2 weeks touring N. Cali and during our vacation stayed in 3 different homes. This was our favorite! The interior is modern and cozy. The views are spectacular inside the house and out. The sectional sofa in the living room is the perfect place to spend a leisurely morning reading a good book because you have the view of the little harbour where 100s of sea lions played during our entire stay. The deck had comfy chairs to sit and enjoy the views. Our absolute favorite which came as a surprise to us (must not have read the descriptions close enough) was being able to take a walk to the nature preserve where we could get a closer look of the sea lions. It was amazing to watch them play and communicate with each other. They had so much personality and were so graceful! Loved it! We're all so lucky that Pat and Sid share their beautiful home! Thanks you for the wonderful experience!
