Kw’as Lake House
Situated on 8 acres of beautiful forest, mossy bluffs and 350 feet of pristine lakefront this lovely home is ideal for a family holiday, quiet nature retreat, small groups or romantic getaway.
Owner built by artist Pierre de Trey, the inside of this unique post and beam wood house was described by one guest as “ like living inside a sculpture”. It was built with local wood, much of which was milled from fallen trees on the property, and many doors, stained glass windows, maple wood floors and fixtures were saved and lovingly refinished from turn of the century Victoria homes.
From this quiet, secluded location there are spectacular views south over Hague Lake and Turtle Island. The property is adjacent to Kw’as Park which offers hours of hiking on well maintained trails through spruce groves, old growth fir and cedar, and high open bluffs. The name Kw’as comes from the aboriginal name for Hague Lake, Kw’as Oyeta, which means warm water. The water is extremely warm for swimming from May to September and the property has a small, private sandy beach.
The lake is home to an ancient strain of coastal cutthroat trout, landlocked perhaps 10,000 years ago, which offers good fly fishing and trolling, and delicious eating. The lake is perfect for canoeing, kayaking, sailing and wind surfing, but no power boats are allowed.
The house comfortably accommodates 6 (maximum 8). There is a TV room with a hideabed, and a studio with a double futon bed and space for yoga & relaxation. You will find a piano, telephone, High Speed Internet, TV, VCR/DVD and stereo system. The library is well stocked with interesting books, audio CDs and games.
The large downstairs bathroom has a refinished claw foot tub, vanity and tile shower. There is a convenient separate toilet room with sink. The new 3 piece bathroom upstairs has a corner shower. The kitchen is fully equipped and a sophisticated water purification system guarantees safe, good tasting drinking water. Outside, the two decks each have outdoor tables and chairs.
Guests are welcome to harvest organic produce from the garden. Children over 5 and babies are welcome but the house and property may not be suitable for younger children or toddlers if unsupervised because of the uneven terrain. This can be discussed with the owner.
The village of Mansons Landing is a 5 minute drive. Here you will find stores, bank, post office, restaurants, museum, community hall, skate board park and medical clinic.
A 3 minute drive to Mansons Landing Provincial Park brings you to a spit which divides a beautiful sandy ocean beach and a unique salt water tidal lagoon, home to a myriad species of marine life, where you can beach comb or harvest clams and oysters. Swimming and snorkelling are popular here. After dark if you dip your hand in the water and create ripples you can experience the spectacular luminescence caused by minute marine organisms. There is a public dock used by boaters and fishermen.
Hollyhock, the well known Retreat Centre is close by and available to guests for day programs, garden visits and interesting guest speakers.

Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1976
I am a retired occupational therapist now only living part time on Cortes Island. My husband Pierre and baby daughter Jade moved "back to the land" in the early 70s, cleared the land to build this house on our beautiful 10 acre lakefront property. Our son Cedar was born on Cortes in 1977 and we raised our family and participated in island life and enjoyed the wonderful community spirit that thrives and nourishes Cortes Island. My husband died in 2003 and our children now adult moved out of the family home. It is too large for me to live there alone but I enjoy sharing our unique artist built home and beautiful property with others who appreciate nature and artistic creation.
Why the Owner Chose Hague Lake
This was my families home for 30 years. Our son Cedar was born on Cortes in 1977 and we raised our family and participated in island life and enjoyed the wonderful community spirit that thrives and nourishes Cortes Island and it's residents. My husband died in 2003 and our children now adult moved out of the family home. It is too large for me to live there alone but I enjoy sharing our unique artist built home and beautiful property with others who appreciate nature and artistic creation. Because of it's spectacular location on pristine Hague Lake it makes an ideal year round vacation home.
The Unique Benefits of this House
Peace and tranquillity, spectacular views and being close to nature and surrounded by beautiful scenery. My unique handcrafted house has been described as "living inside a sculpture". It is more than that since it also encompasses comfortable luxury with every modern convenience. Staying at my home is an unforgettably enjoyable experience.

We loved our stay on Cortes Island. The house has beautiful views from every window and is cozy and comfortable. There were two families and there was plenty of room for all of us. The house was clean and had everything we needed. We really enjoyed the beautiful beach at Hague Lake which is a two minute drive from the house. For a peaceful and relaxing vacation or for more adventurous pursuits we all would highly recommend Cortes Island, and Kwas house.

We spent a total of three nights in Kw'as Lake House and were overwhelmed by the fantastic views, unique architecture and small town charm of the island. The photos of this home do not do it justice- it's light, airy, and every window has a view that could easily be mistaken for a painting on the wall. The home was very clean upon our arrival and we definitely felt like welcome guests.

frankly, I would not like to comment, because it is such a wonderful place that it is best it is kept a secret. however, anicca asked that I do so here it is. We loved it. The house is high in the salal, which to those of you in the know means that there is plenty of sun shine, marvelous red light bouncing off the arbutus, and a view that you could spend a life time looking at. Everything is handmade, and I feel like I learned a little about building and the people who built it living there. Every piece of wood has thought in its choice and placement. I dream one day of building my own house, this is what it would be like (if I had the skills). The little beach attached is also a nice treat. Gives you a private break from the more attended places on the island for a afternoon swim. Not to worry Cortes is still outside the loop. I will return. Anicca is a treat. My son learned to swim. What more can I say.

We stayed at Kwa's Lake House for 3 weeks during our honeymoon this past summer. Upon arriving to the home, we were absolutely blown away, speechless to be exact. The pictures on the website are GORGEOUS but in person, this place comes alive in a way only imaginable once you have the opportunity to see it for yourself. This entire property is a true piece of artwork thanks to the hard work and unique vision of the De Trey Family. So much time and thought were put into the structure of the Home and we were still discovering the smallest details in the gardens, the decks, and the house, 3 weeks later. Cortes Island is a magical place and Annica, opening up your home to us made us feel like one of the lucky ones who had a chance to discover such a beautiful spot on this Earth. Aside from the home itself, which is so hard to tear yourself away from, we took several day trips around Cortes Island. Hollyhock retreat was so relaxing; the massage in the little cabin in the forest was perfect. We hiked the entire span of Kwa's park, went to the Farmers Markets every week, spent many sunsets sitting on the beach at Mansons Landing and found some unforgettable Ocean spots on Cortes where we saw Sea Lions, Purple Star fish, Bald Eagles, Baby deer, Elk, Flying Squirrels, the list goes on. We have already convinced our family to come here for a visit and plan on returning at some point in the future for an anniversary. If you are looking for a private, beautiful, paradise, with an excellent host who has a heart of gold and a unique knowledge of this special Island, look no further because you have arrived. Friends, family and couples alike, Kwa's Lake House is your answer. Thank you Annica for an experience of a lifetime. Adam and Jennifer Goldman Toronto, Ontario Canada

Anicca, what a pleasure it was staying in your artistically, hand-crafted, organic home. Sitting on the deck and looking out over the lake, we felt as if we were living in a tree house. Your gardens are inviting to the curious and full of surprises. Swimming at your private beach, with bathers diving from the rocks on the far distant shore, made us think of a sunny Homer or Eakins watercolor. We ventured to the village crossroads to shop. We visited Hollyhock; their gardens were a knockout! We watched intergenerational groups construct sand sculptures on the beach. Cortes Island is truly a paradise, and your home was where the serenity and beauty of the place washed over us. We plan to return. Elly and Jerry Dickason Portland, Oregon & Victoria BC

Kw'as Lake House is absolutely unique. Created by artists, it is a wonderfully comfortable home where every nook contains treasures, stories and unexpected delight. The unparalleled location provides a stunning view out over Hague Lake at the level of the eagles. We loved having breakfast on the sundeck, surrounded by flowers and hummingbirds and plan on returning again and again. Dr & Mrs Saul Arbess

We spent 3 wonderful weeks on Cortes Island, B.C staying at Kw’as Lake House a lovely and exceptional house which was built by the owner. It's got lots of character with many special different windows and a cosy livingroom and a nice kitchen with all the facilities. The house is situated above a lake and has a magnificent view. I enjoyed swimming in this lake and canoeing! The nature is so beautiful that just sitting on the terrace and enjoying the view and the peace was very special but if you want to have an active life, there are many possibilities. I surely can recommend a stay there!Christine Renggli, Nijmegen, Holland

We would just like to let you know how much we enjoyed staying at Kw'as Lake House. It's such a wonderful property, with so much individuality and character. You may recall, we called it a Hansel and Gretel House? And such a spectacular location too, overlooking the lake. Cortes Island and Kw'as House in particular is a marvelous place to relax - very tranquil and far away from the hustle and bustle of 21st century life. We explored the many wilderness trails on the island (many straight from the doorstep) and returned home feeling refreshed and ready for anything!Lynne & Shay McPeake Stockport England

My family had a wonderful vacation at this home on Hague Lake in June. My husband who loves fresh water fishing was out on the lake every day and came back with lots of delicious trout for supper. My children loved playing on the sandy beach and we all enjoyed swimming in the warm lake, kayaking, and harvesting clams and oysters at the nearby saltwater lagoon.
