Why the Owner Chose Captain Cook
Captain Cook and Kealakekua are the most desirable areas to live on the big island. We are in a rural setting, but close to Kailua Kona town and only a 90 miles from the volcano. Honaunau bay and Kealakekua bay are the best bays for diving and snorkeling on ANY island in the state of Hawaii. Our property is a million dollar horse ranch that is completely fenced and gated. All of the properties in this our area are over 5 acres, so it is very private. We lived in Kailua Kona for a few years until we could find the perfect property in Captain Cook. We have 6 horses on the ranch.
The Unique Benefits at this House
When you stay on the ranch, you have the opportunity to ride our horses. We offer riding to our guests only. These are our personal horses and we love them very much. Horse riding has an extra charge and is not included with your stay on the ranch. Horse riding is dangerous and is done at your own risk. Hawaii law says we are not liable for injuries sustained from riding a horse, because horses are animals and are known to the state of Hawaii to be inherently dangerous. Call Mike to discuss riding options.

We had an amazing week here in Captain Cook !! Truly a positive experience that we still talk about months later. My husband & I were so happy to return to our favorite part of The Big Island but this time with our two boys (ages 9 & 6). Mike & Crystal really made us feel welcome & the accomodations were just what we needed: very clean, quiet & comfortable! The location amongst the coffee plantations is a perfect setting not to mention all the animals who we really enjoyed. Thank you so much! We will be back!!

We stayed here for a week on our Big Island honeymoon. It was a perfect home base for all the exploration, adventure, and relaxation the island has to offer. Mike and Crystal were friendly, helpful, and available when we needed them, while still giving us our privacy. The suite was clean, tidy, well-stocked, and SO comfortable -- I already miss the comfy bed! You get a ton of space and amenities, as well as a great central Kona Coast location. You're about 30 minutes from the airport, and from a ton of great beaches, kayaking, snorkeling. You're about 1.5 hours of a fun, scenic drive from Volcanoes National Park. (I don't like to drive much, and even I enjoyed this drive.) We particularly loved the private, ocean-view lanai. In your first day or two, take a tour of one (or several) of the nearby small coffee farms, and buy some Kona coffee there, direct from the source. Then enjoy a delicious cup of fresh-ground, fresh-brewed coffee outside every morning, watching the ocean and listening to the birds. Life doesn't get much better. The beach gear and cooler were also particularly great -- no need to rent that stuff, or buy it and then worry about how to get it home. With a supermarket nearby, and full-size fridge in the suite, we could easily pack a picnic on any day trip. Included use of laundry machines added that extra touch of convenience. Pack with that in mind -- you might even be able to get away with just a carry-on (and avoid the ruinous checked-bag charges every airline wants now). If you miss your pets, you'll love the sweet, friendly dogs and cat. The dogs adopted us as family right away and greeted us with joyful barks, wagging tails, and doggie kisses. They and the cat kept us company on the lanai. Don't worry, if you'd rather not have canine/feline company, you can just close the lanai gate -- but having new furry friends added to the fun and relaxation for us. We enjoyed every second of our stay here. We'd recommend it to anyone we know coming to the Big Island.

We just returned from a week at this lovely vacation rental . We got more that we expected for the very resonable rates that were charged. Comfy king sized bed, plenty of extra blankets to snuggle up under and glourious bird song in the morning - with an occasional rooster for decoration. Brand new grill on the huge lanai (apparantly the Hawaii weather is quite tough on appliances and the grill has to be replaced about every 6 months) . There is also a free washer and dryer right next to the unit and free WIFI. The place is well thought out and perfectly equipped. This place is for animal lovers! The dogs and cat Moke (we wanted take the cat home in our carryon!) were great company. The owners arranged a "meet and greet" with one of their horses, we got to pet them and feed them some carrots and take some pictures. We were told that we could arrange for riding the horses too. The drive up to the home will take your breath away it really is old Hawaii! We loved the great grocery store less than 2 miles away and all the free beach gear provided! Thank you for a wonderful romantic place to enjoy our honeymoon!

Our stay here was just what it needed to be. This is not the place for people looking for resort-style luxury. It's in a great location for day-trips as far south as South Point and as far north as Waimea Canyon. The rental is quite efficiently appointed. Though the several mile one-lane mountain road to that leads to the house is a bit hairy in spots. The two dogs are both very friendly. Though I could see how a non-lover of dogs woould find them a bit overbearing. They trap their own water for the house so there are a lot of reminders around the unit about turning off the water and not wasting it. It's not really a big deal, but you do think about it whenever the sinks or shower are on. There are an unlimited number of chickens up there and they crow at all hours. There are also a few wild turkeys we saw every day on our way to the main road. The horses on the property are more or less off limits to guests due to liability issues. The gas grill in front of the unit worked, though not very well. We were there at the end of May and there was a great deal of haze pretty much every day. We could see the ocean around midday, but never in the morning or at night. It's moist up there. It only rained one night, but the humidity makes it tough to air dry anything. It gets into the 50's in the early morning. Overall, it's impossible to give this place anything less than an excellent rating. The price alone earns that rating. Thanks, Mike and Crystal.
Owner response:Thank you for your 5 star review! I just wanted to say that we lost our dear 14 year old Sam (black lab) in August, we are so sorry that he is gone. We knew he could be a bit over friendly sometimes, but he had that joy of life that we hated to restrict. If we notice that a guest is (was) overwhelmed by the happy greetings we always made an effort to restrict the dog(s) access to the guest. I do want to address some things that this guest has posted in his review. We replace our grills about every 6 months, the climate is so harsh on them. We are so sorry that this guest had a bit of trouble lighting the grill, but it was replaced immediately. We provide a washer and a dryer that can be used to dry damp bathing suits and towels. We do allow access to our horses, we are always more that happy to arrange a "meet and greet" with the horses or we can show you how feed them snacks, however we cannot allow guests to wander in the pasture because horses can and do buck and jump and run around. This It is for the safety of our guests as well as for the safety of our insurance agents heart :-) The road leading up to our home is 1.2 miles. It is a one lane road country road with many safe turn outs and courteous drivers. This may not be what many of our guests are used to to, but believe me after the second time up the road most of out guests love it (watch out Kyle Busch!) and love the natural beauty of the rainforest. We use a water catchment system. This means that you are using real Hawaiian rainwater - no chemicals (it makes your hair and skin so soft). We don't want to make any guest feel uncomfortable using water they need we just ask that it is not wasted. Many guests have commented to us that they never realized how much water they waste and plan to fit it into thier commitment to be greener when they get home. We work very hard to make comfortable and affordable accomodation for our guests. I hope this response has not come across as defensive. We encourage our guests to come to us with any comments, suggestions and problems that they may have (we love all the good praises too !). We know that we can only grow and evolve as a business and as people with input from our guests. Mahalo!
