Enjoy long walks along peaceful Sugar Beach, the longest white sand beach on Maui. An undeveloped, approximately 3 mile, section of Sugar Beach expands from Kealia Resort. This quiet beach awaits just outside your front door; in fact, there are no other resorts after Kealia along this undeveloped section of Sugar Beach. Sugar Beach wraps along beautiful Ma'alaea Bay, let the sound of the waves soothe your stress and lull you to sleep.
Ma’alaea Bay is a popular migration destination for Humpback Whales. The bay offers some of the BEST whale watching opportunities in Hawaii. Watch whales breach from the lanai, take one of the many guided tours with a marine biologist offered at the Ma’alaea Harbor, or paddle a kayak from the beach right outside your doorstep.
Aquatic wildlife in Ma’alaea Bay is abundant and we make it easy for guests to explore this wildlife by keeping 2 sets of snorkeling gear (including fins) for the use of guests. We also provide 2 Boogie Boards for those who enjoy playing in and riding on the waves. There are binoculars for getting a really up close look at the whales.
The gentle water of Ma’alaea Bay allows kayaks and outrigger canoes to enter and exit the water easily. Outrigger canoes and kayaks are an excellent way to see whales, sea turtles and other sea life. These canoes are fun to paddle and are an excellent way to become familiar with a traditional Hawaiian mode of transportation.
Outrigger canoe clubs frequently paddle in Ma’alaea Bay. There are 2 canoe clubs within a 10 minute walk from Kealia Resort. On select days these clubs offer beginner paddlers the opportunity to paddle in outrigger canoes with more experienced paddlers for a nominal fee. The fee is approximately 25 dollars for 4 paddling adventures with the canoe club.
Bird lovers and bird watchers will delight with the unique bird watching opportunities at The Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge. The Wildlife Refuge is adjacent to the northern section of Sugar Beach and is a quick walk from the resort. This 700 acre refuge is one of the few natural wetlands remaining in the Hawaiian Islands and provides suitable nesting, feeding, and resting habitat for endangered water-birds. The pond also hosts a diverse assemblage of migratory birds from late summer (August) to early spring (April).
We provide cable television, DVD player, and WIFI internet access for those evenings when our guests want to stay indoors and relax. Additionally, guests of Kealia Resort congregate every Wednesday evening at 5:30 for pupus (appetizers). The resort also offers complimentary coffee and donuts every Friday morning at 10:00.
Kealia Resort is a quick 15 minute drive from Kahului Airport; Kealia is approximately a 20 minute drive to Lahaina and a 15 minute drive to Makena State Beach. We strive to provide our guests with the amenities needed for cooking all meals. A personal gourmet chef is available to hire for those guests who wish to stay at home and be pampered. Kealia Resort is within walking distance for those who wish to walk to the local Japanese restaurant, farmers market or a quick 5 minute drive to additional restaurants, cinemas, pubs, coffee houses, and gift shops in Kihei. |
