We chose Astichello largely because of the price and also because of the location. We weren't disappointed in either. Though not spacious, the apartment is comfortable and quiet with all the amenities one would need. (There is even a boombox with a small collection of classical CDs in the living room and a book exchange rack in the bedroom.) Because it's on the south side of the river, away from most of Florence's main attractions, the neighborhood is not as noisy and congested as much of the city is. But Florence is so compact (unlike Rome), all the major attractions are easily reached by foot. The apartment is only a five-minute walk from the Ponte Vecchio, several restaurants, a very good supermarket, an inexpensive internet cafe, shops, etc. The kitchen facilities could be a little better; the stove, for example, is a two-burner electrical hotplate. But there are plenty of pots and pans and dishes, and with the nearby supermarket, we cooked most of our own dinners. There is also a washer, and unlike some places we stayed in Italy, the plumbing is very good. The shower is excellent. Because the apartment is on the top floor of a four-story building, with no elevator and 71 steps to clilmb, it can't be recommended to anyone with serious physical limitations. But for everyone else it's fine. If we were to return to Florence, we'd try to stay there again.
Recommended for:Romantic getaway, sightseeing, tourists without a car, age 55+, girls getaway.
