Akumal is a quiet, residential beachside community located about 60 miles south of the Cancun Airport on a well-paved highway. This small town and the nearby area offer many fine restaurants and plenty of opportunities for snorkeling, diving, swimming, caving, biking, bird watching, or just plain relaxing on the beach. That is the beauty of this place - you can enjoy many activities or simply relax on a beach chair under the palms.
From our airy and spacious condo, La Bahia, you can walk barefoot to two restaurants/beach bars, relax and read under the palms or one of our palapas with 180 degree views of the sea, or snorkel in the bay, only yards from your patio, where sea turtles and tropical fish abound. The sandy beach is never crowded. This two bedroom/two bath unit of 1,125 square feet includes new appliances as well as new air conditioning and ceiling fans, although tropical breezes often make these unnecessary. The open floor plan includes large windows on three sides of the living room and is decorated with live tropical plants and palms, and Mexican artifacts. The Caribbean Sea can be viewed from all rooms.
The master bedroom (king-sized bed) and guest room (two twin-sized beds) both have ample closet space. Daily maid service is available, and beach towels are provided. There is no TV or telephone to ensure maximum serenity, but cell phone and wireless Internet service are available, so bring your cell and laptop, if you wish. Phone and Internet services are also available at an Internet café in town.
The town of Akumal, a short walk from the condo, has two markets (with ATM machines and enough food items to meet your needs); seven restaurants (one with live entertainment a few nights a week during high season); three dive shops; travel office (TSA) for arranging tours, fishing and boating trips; fresh produce market twice a week; several shops and boutiques; yoga classes and fitness center; bike rentals; laundromat; and more. Two small convenience stores are located just a block or so from La Bahia.
The CEA (Centro Ecologica Akumal) provides information on sea turtles and other marine life. Akumal is ecologically protected and well known for its sea turtles and their nesting grounds. In fact, turtles nest on our beach from about April to November, and the CEA can arrange viewing tours for an incredible experience. Try snorkeling or diving in one or more of the area's many beautiful freshwater cenotes.
Playa del Carmen (22 miles) has great shopping and restaurants, two large supermarkets, golf courses, and a bird sanctuary in nearby Playacar. You can swim with the dolphins at Puerto Aventuras (12 miles), which also has manatee and sea lion shows, restaurants, and shopping. Tulum (about 20 minutes south) has restaurants, shopping, sightseeing, and five miles of pristine beaches. Don't miss the Tulum Mayan ruins, a unique sea-cliff site; the entrance is on the left shortly before the town. Just south of Tulum is the fantastic Sian Ka'an Biosophere. Drive there yourself (check on road conditions first) or arrange a tour through TSA in Akumal. |
