Location: Paris Arrondissement 18, Paris, Ile-de-France (Paris Area), France, Europe (30 minutes from Charles de Gaulle in N. Central Paris)
Accommodations: Apartment, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-4)
Located in a lovely, hidden corner of Montmartre, this apartment is a beautiful and classic Parisian apartment. Located on the first floor of a 19th century building, the apartment is a haven of quiet and light. You enter into a lovely, intimate foyer where you can have candlelight dinners and feel yourselves living in the Belle Epoque.
The bedroom is spacious and has a queen size bed and lovely antique furnishings, including a beautiful marble fireplace. The living room contains a comfortable double sofa and offers a gracious setting to receive guests, or simply to enjoy relaxing after a busy day exploring Paris. The apartment has high, 9-foot ceilings and period decoration details. Both the living and bedrooms have full, floor to ceiling windows, so the rooms are filled with light and sun from a Western exposure.
The kitchen is a special feature of this apartment. It is designed and furnished with an elegant sense of the use of space and is perfect to cook a Parisian dinner for friends or simply linger over croissants and cappuccino. There is ample space to eat in the kitchen, and everything is arranged for the gourmet cook who wants to shop in the neighborhood.
The teak bathroom is modern and well appointed, including a double shower. Both the kitchen and bathroom have East-facing windows, for morning light.
Our apartment is 530 square feet and is fully furnished for a comfortable long or short stay. All appliances are provided, including dishwasher and washing machine. Telephone service, CD stereo and television/VCR are provided. All linens, cookware and cutlery are furnished.
The Neighborhood: The Montmartre neighborhood is one of the most famous areas of Paris. Our apartment is located on the western slope of "The Butte" (as Montmartre is a hill) and has the best of both worlds. You are very close to the action, but a little away from the incessant tramp of tourists that characterizes the area of Sacre Coeur or Abbesses. Square Carpeaux is a charming small square with neighborhood bistros, the essential boulanger and other traditional small business of a true Parisian "quartier."
There is even a large park just a few minutes away, where you can watch the pigeons a la Hemingway, or doze in the sun over the newspaper. Perhaps the most special aspect of the neighborhood is its close proximity to the shopping streets of Damremont and Lepic. Both are justly famous for the quality of their provisioners, cheese, wine, pastries, fish and meat, fruits and vegetables. Both streets attract a knowledgeable clientele who expect the highest quality, with a neighborhood ambiance. Just to walk down the street during market hours makes one feel inspired! Non-chefs are not ignored either, as there are many charming small restaurants close-by.
We live nearby and Stephanie is a fluent French speaker. Darrell excels in "bricolage" (handyman skills) and we are available to help our guests feel perfectly comfortable in their new setting. Stephanie led walking tours in Paris and can help you plan your itinerary. We greet our guests and are happy to assist with dinner reservations, airport or train connections or the numerous small details which make a trip comfortable and memorable.
Public transport:
There are three Metro stops nearby and excellent bus service in the immediate neighborhood. Public transportation connects you to all major lines of Central Paris and is direct to Opera, the Louvre and the Left Bank. Close to the major rail stations of Gare St. Lazare and Gare de Nord, the neighborhood and apartment are easy to reach from the train.
Other information: The building is small and owner-occupied. Security is excellent. Children are welcome. We will furnish additional photos, an area map and description of the neighborhood upon email request. The apartment has its own small library of English guidebooks for guests’ use.
Here is a sample of comments from recent guests: "We had the privilege of being the very first guests of Stephanie and Darrell. We were a little concerned about not staying closer to the center of town. But this was perfect! Once we mastered the bus, we were glad to come back each day to our quiet neighborhood where you seldom run into another tourist. Our apartment was perfect and we couldn't have asked for better "landlords". We're already planning our next trip."
"We traveled from Austin TX to London and then here. This apartment became our home-away-from-home. Since we brought our 2 year old son, we found the comforts of home in the apartment a relief. We'd love to return sometime and would recommend this apartment. Stephanie and Darrell have been great hosts.

Bonjour mes amis: We've been thinking long and hard about what to write in this journal since we've had the privilege of being the very first guests of Stephanie and Darrell. But it's hard to describe what a wonderful time we've had. Every day brought new adventures. Paris is spectacular; our apartment was perfect and we couldn't have asked for better "landlords." We can see why Stephanie and Darrell have chosen to live here. The sites, sounds and of course, the cuisine are superb. I don't thinkthe French know how to make a bad meal! Looking back, we think our favorite day was our first day. We had nothing special planned, just wanted to get acquainted with the local neighborhood. Stephanie gave us some streets to wander through--rue Lamark, Place de Clichy. We just started walking and stumbled onto the Moulin Rouge and then this wonderful little place (Place du Tertre) with local artists and then Sacre Coeur is right in front of us. All in our own neighborhood. We were a little concerned about not staying closer to the center of town. But this was perfect! Once we mastered the bus routine, we were glad to come back each day to our quiet neighborhood where you seldom run into another tourist. Please read the folder prepared by Stephanie. There's lots of good information. She and Darrell were extremely helpful. They were available to answer all of our questions. That made the trip so much easier. Au revoir to Paris and to our new friends, Stephanie and Darrell. We're already planning our next trip. (Bernie, Mary and Lori)

Like your previous two sets of guests, we found the apartment at 68 rue Joseph de Maistre ideally located to launch our Paris (and especially Montmartre) adventures. For my daughter Emily and I, this is our first trip outside of North America. For my wife, it is the first time back in 26 years. A sure measure of the fun we have had is the way we collapse into bed each night in utter exhaustion. While we have really enjoyed dining at the local cafes and restaurants (especially La Petite Syrah), we have taken special pleasure in bringing home prepared foods, breads, wines and pastries from the local shops and enjoying them right here at the window. So many thanks!
